Saints release Larry Warford

After the Saints drafted interior offensive lineman Cesar Ruiz in the first round of the draft, Saints head coach Sean Payton said that he didn’t know if Ruiz or last year’s center Erik McCoy would wind up moving to guard but strongly suggested that one of them would be there because “we weren’t drafting someone that high to come in and be a backup.”

With left guard Andrus Peat freshly signed to a five-year deal, right guard would be the spot Ruiz or McCoy moved to and Payton said they’d compete with veteran Larry Warford. The Saints have had a change of heart about holding such a competition, however.

The Saints announced on Friday that they have released Warford. The move will clear $7.75 million in cap space while leaving $5.125 million in dead money.

Warford started 44 games for the Saints since joining the team as a free agent in 2017. He made the Pro Bowl in all three seasons with the team and should draw interest from teams looking for help on their offensive line.

  1. Even after cutting a pro bowler the Saints still have the best O-line in football.

  2. Dolphins are collecting offensive linemen these days and they still have money to burn…..

  3. Drew got all the cash so some guys got to go. Diamonds are expensive.

  4. The Redskins bring in two studs from Louisiana — first Charles during the draft and soon Larry. The Hogs 2.0 are ready to roll!!!!

  5. You’re all wrong, he’s coming home to Detroit! A little nostalgia for the team that drafted him in the third round.

Please Vikings!! We need interior line help badly
    ——————————————————————————————-

With that QB you have, you need more than just interior line help!!

  7. Is this the guy that the Vikings’ interior rushers ran over in the playoffs last year?

Steelers might want to kick the tires on Larry.

    ————–

No one is kicking the tires. He’s going to have his choice and might get a pay raise for a team in deep need.

  9. This offseason it’s simply his obvious lack of speed – broadband speed – that did for Larry.

THe Edge rushers twisted back into the interior, so Guards were blocking DEs …

I’m not a fan of the Saints releasing Warford.
    I dont get it

  11. Was joking before the draft that Warford could come back to Motown – then Quinn drafted a couple dozen Guards.

  12. The one spot on the Browns Oline that is open for competition is Right guard..

  13. Yes, this is the guy that Vikings ran over during playoffs. Saints cut him today. Problem Solved. See ya on Christmas.

  14. Jets can cut Brian Winters and free up 7.5 Mill. Get it done Joe Douglas.

  15. NFL contract structure is a bit dumb in a way. Hey, you are pretty good player in a league where careers end in a few years? We’ll wait for 2,5 months into free agency before we release you so you can’t get a good deal anymore. Sorry 🙁

  16. I know just can’t afford to keep everyone, but dang at the very least would add fantastic o-line depth.

  17. Pats don’t have the kind of money he’ll get paid but sure could use the Oline help

  18. He did have problems in several games last season. Saints did not want to let him go, but it seems he was not open to renegotiating his contract to reduce the cap hit. Solid professional and good locker room presence. He will be missed by WhoDat Nation. He will be an asset to anyone that signs him

  19. Sometimes the term pro bowler is stretching it a bit. Warford is a 2019 example of a recognizable popularity contest name and good substitute for a pro bowler who decided not to play in the game. Years 1 and 2 were legit but year 3 was not good and Saints fans questioned the pro bowl selection, just saying.

  20. Question: What team purposely forfeits draft picks and cuts Pro Bowlers?

Hint #1- It’s NOT the Browns!

Hint #2 – The logo looks like this: ⚜️

  21. Is he a better Right Guard then you currently have? I think perhaps 10-15 teams would fall into that category, Seahawks included. He is also young enough to get many years out of him. He has not missed many games over the years and only twice more than one in a season, that I can find.

  22. Just to school some of you clowns who still post “Drew makes to much money”. Take a look at these facts, this is a list of cap hits for the 2020 season. Drew has accomplished more than pretty much everyone on this list not named Brady and maybe Big Ben. I would still take Brees over pretty much every one of the QB’s on this list. Only 5-6 QB’s on this list are considered “elite” so you have a bunch of mediocre QB’s making more Drew and more than Brady. So go ahead and takes your years old “Drew makes to much money” joke and put it in the garbage where it belongs.

    Dak Prescott Cowboys $31,509,000
    Russell Wilson Seahawks $31,000,000
    Jared Goff Rams $28,842,682
    Jimmy Garoppolo 49ers $26,600,000
    Philip Rivers Colts $25,000,000
    Tom Brady Buccaneers $25,000,000
    Ben Roethlisberger Steelers $23,750,000
    Drew Brees Saints $23,650,000
    Ryan Tannehill Titans $22,500,000
    Aaron Rodgers Packers $21,642,000
    Derek Carr Raiders $21,500,000
    Alex Smith Redskins $21,400,000
    Jacoby Brissett Colts $21,312,500
    Matt Stafford Lions $21,300,000
    Kirk Cousins Vikings $21,000,000
    Matt Ryan Falcons $18,962,500
    Carson Wentz Eagles $18,656,536
    Teddy Bridgewater Panthers $14,000,000

They have no cap space and soooo many holes on their crappy roster. Not going to happen.

  24. Rick Spielman hurry up and get his agent on the phone to bring him to MN. This is the gold mine you’ve been waiting for by not signing any big name Oline free agents or drafting a G earlier in the draft

  25. Titans. They have the cap space and Derrick Henry. Come block for El Tractorcito.

  26. Maybe the Packers could cut Billy Turner and sign him….. big upgrade

Yeah, I know. Thus making them interior rushers.

How does it make sense to draft a guard in the first round to shore up your interior line and then cut your best lineman?

Ryan Ramczyk is the Saints best lineman. Two time All Pro in his first three years, first team last year.

  29. Will he still be good or is he just a product of the Saints dynamic offense?

  30. Come on, GM Pace. Protect Trubisky and Foles by signing this man for the Bears OL.

  31. Did you guys see what the Vikings did to this guy? He was a weak link in that line and zimmer took advantage of it. You don’t just release great offensive lineman to save money. Lol. The saints are basically saying, he’s just not worth it anymore.

  32. I just cannot for the life of me understand why the Saints are so low on Warford and so high on Peat. Peat isn’t bad, but Warford is many times better and is not prohibitively old. They drafted Ruiz in the first, insisted on a huge extension for Peat, all the while having a better interior lineman on their roster that they forced aside. There were whispers of them trying to rid themselves of Warford last year for some reason, but the positioning on the interior did not work to their liking. Instead of giving Peat the extension, they would have been better served in their current win-now situation making room for Warford to make a run in what likely is Brees’ last year. Payton is an offensive genius and the Saints’ success speaks for itself, but it’s still an odd position to take. Peat at least is still capable, but Warford is a much higher quality lineman, and it seems like a case of “we picked him, so we’re sticking with him just for that reason” in Peat’s case. Even with that, forcing the situation by drafting another interior lineman in the first in Ruiz (after having a young pick in McCoy at center) is just…strange.

Why force out a proven product for the sake of a lesser quality starter and a question mark in the draft? Yeah, if they drafted Ruiz to be insurance this year and then release Warford next season, that would make sense. That’s make sense, a young guy to take over for an expensive vet, certainly. But to draft him just to force out your quality starter before the pick has even played a snap? Just seems…forced.

  33. Less than 8 million for a very good guard is a bargain in today’s NFL. He’s going to get a raise I think.

  34. But why release a pro bowler who has done nothing but stay healthy and make the pro bowl??
Was it strictly a salary cap measure?
It’s my understanding that stud OL don’t grow on trees so why put all this blind faith in a rookie,
Reminds me a lot of the Jason Peters Fiasco in Buffalo, except Peters was the best Left Tackle in the league at the time

Yet you can’t beat the Vikings in the playoffs. In fact, even with the OROY and the DROY, still can’t beat the Vikings in the playoffs. Imagine! Tell me again about your wonderful offensive line!

  36. Larry Warford isn’t going to sign for chump change. He’s going to want at least a 3 year deal for something around $27 – $30 million and a big signing bonus. Let’s Say $12 million.
He was Pro Bowl the past 3 years. He wants the respect.
Actually I’m surprised New Orleans released him because they took a $5.5 million dead cap charge to cut him. That’s almost what he was due in salary for the year.
It doesn’t make cap sense and I don’t understand why they cut him. Whatever,………
I guess that’s why I’m not an NFL GM.

  37. made the pro bowl the last 3 years and is only 28 and they couldn’t have traded him for a draft pick ? Makes no sense.

    *****
Why would the Bears need to pay $8 million for someone to protect Trubisky on the bench? They could probably hire a couple of security guards at $20 an hour to do it if they really felt it was necessary.

  39. Miami has the cash and he would definitely upgrade the O Line. Tua needs all the protection he can get.

  40. Raiders may do the same with Gabe Jackson. He’ll be every bit as popular as Warford.

  41. The reason Warford wasn’t traded for a pick is that the Saints have an aversion to draft picks.

Speaking truth, but Im suspicious that Warford’s rep has slipped and he is gonna go for way less than what we paid him. Why couldnt we get any trade value ?

  43. If they didn’t waste all that $ on Paysum Hill they could have kept a real player like Warford.

Once the Bears sign their draft picks they won’t have even be able to make this guy a minimum salary vet salary offer. The Bears have also restructured contracts to free up money for this year and it’s gone!

  45. Shows you how worthless the pro bowl is. Fans have no idea how to pick any player let alone an offensive lineman.
