Deshaun Watson said before the 2017 draft that he talked to the Bears

Texans quarterback Deshaun Watson raised plenty of eyebrows on Friday when he tweeted, “The Bears NEVER ONCE talked to me” before the 2017 NFL draft. But that’s not what Watson said at the time.

Prior to the 2017 draft, Watson said in an interview with Rich Eisen that the Bears had talked to him.

“I’ve talked to some teams on the phone, Chicago, Baltimore and a whole bunch of different teams have checked in on me,” Watson said in that pre-draft interview.

The Chicago Tribune also reported that the Bears talked to Watson both at the Scouting Combine and at his pro day. ESPN reported in 2017 that the Bears sent a large contingent that included General Manager Ryan Pace and then-coach John Fox to Clemson’s pro day to watch Watson. The Bears were one of only four teams to send both their head coach and GM to Clemson’s pro day.

Perhaps Watson has just forgotten it three years later, but the historical record indicates that the Bears did, in fact, talk to Watson before the 2017 NFL draft.

The Bears undeniably whiffed when they traded up from No. 3 to No. 2 in the 2017 draft to select Mitchell Trubisky, when they could have stayed where they were or even traded down and selected Watson or Patrick Mahomes. But while the Bears came up with the wrong answer, they did their homework.

  1. You also have to wonder about the quality of his Clemson degree – it’s in Communication.

  2. Hindsight is 20-20, everyone and their mother-in-laws had Mitchell Trubisky as the top QB prospect in the 2017 draft. To suggest otherwise is revisionist history.

Now if you’re arguing that Bears made a bad trade to move up one spot, you have a much better argument. The deal was criticized at that time with most people saying they gave up too much to move up one spot.

  3. All time great moments in scouting and drafting failures. Failure of this magnitude was usually reserved for the Browns

  4. Uh… Perhaps he meant day of the draft, or days leading up to the draft?

Combine and Pro day are not the same.

  5. I’ll say this. As a Bostonian living in my wifes hometown of Chicago, the 2017 draft was really awkward in a sense. Garrett was going 1st, no doubt about it. But when the Bears traded UP to get Trubisky, everyone was shocked! Now, Schefter was blabbing about how “sources” told him the bears were screwing with teams to ensure Trubisky was their guy. Something along the lines of they negotiated potential tradse to ensure someone wouldn’t take Trubisky, so they could line up the move with San Francisco to grab him. Then, it comes out that John fox had NO IDEA the bears were taking Mitch, until an hour before the draft. Hell, Mitch didnt think he was going to Chicago either.

What an EPIC MESS! I feel bad for Bears fans. Watson and Mahomes were considered project QB’s, but hindsight is 20/20, and i still would not have taken mitch now. Hopefully Stidham turns out alright for us.

  6. If you Google the definition of INCOMPETENT, these are the first 2 words to pop up:

    RYAN PACE

The Bears may have called Watson, but they did not COURT him the same way they did Mitch. Pace took Mitch to Outback Steakhouse.

At best, Pace SPED through a McDonalds drive thru for Watson. He gave him a Happy Meal and a pat on the back saying “You’re a really good tryer. Don’t ever stop trying.”

  7. At this point, why do you care so much Deshaun? 5th year option picked up, life is good. I would spend more time on how & why your team blew a 24-0 lead?

  8. He didn’t say Bears. He said Chicago. Cubs, White Six, Bulls, Blackhawks?

  9. “Failure of this magnitude was usually reserved for the Browns”

Oh plenty of teams make mistakes this bad.

    Raiders – Jamarcus Russell
    Chargers – Ryan Leaf
    Bengals – Akili Smith

That’s right off the top of my head without working at finding the plenty more that are out there

  10. Who cares?? Any qb that ends up in Chicago would probably have their career ruined anyway. Chicago is so terrible Mahomes might not even be Mahomes if he ended up there

  11. Last place looks good for the Bears this year. With Nagy calling plays it’s a lock.

The Bears could screw up drafting Trevor Lawrence with the first pick?

  13. The Titans GM had the 5th overall pick and was receiving calls from teams wanting to trade up to draft Trubisky. Those calls stopped after the Bears made the trade. The Bears also received calls from teams that year interested in trading up, and Pace also knew that John Lynch wanted to trade down. That is what initiated the trade up to secure Mitch.

Mitchell Trubisky was the consensus number 1 QB available in NFL circles. If he wasn’t, then Mahomes would’ve have fallen to 10 and Watson would’ve have fallen to 12.

    _________

I believe the Lions record against Matt Nagy is 0-4.

  15. I don’t fault the bears, everyone had Trubisky as the top QB. It happens every year.

But KC deserves a lot of credit, everyone had them taking Watson, and while he looks okay… He’s no Mahomes.

And he’s making stuff up as to try to make Chicago look bad for not taking him. Yet I don’t hear him chirping about KC not taking him.

While I think talent is important. More QB’s would look better with Hopkins, a top 3 wide out in the league, that with what Mitch has.

  16. I don’t see the difference between Trubisky and Watson. Neither QB has won anything big, although they’ve both won some games. Mahomes is in another planet altogether.

  17. Like the Baker Mayfield non-handshake, it’s widely reported and a great story “proving” what everybody thinks they know, right up until the documented facts get in the way.

Has Watson come out yet claiming his account was hacked?

  18. I never understood why anyone was buying into the hype of trubisky anyway. I mean really what had he done to earn top prospect?

  19. maybe there are 2 different kinds of “talking”

regardless, pace and les snead are 2 of the worst gms in the league and should be fired for failed teambuilds

  20. In the Bears defense, they were probably worried about his legs since he tore an acl in college and they were partially justified when he tore another one in the NFL. Not saying they were right in taking Trubisky, but they weren’t completely wrong in not taking Watson. No one knows how long his legs are going to hold up.

  21. All you need to know about DeShaun “Air Guitar” Watson.

In the 2nd quarter with the Texans up 24-0 on the Chiefs, Watson is playing Air Guitar on the sidelines. Patrick Mahomes is rallying his troops.

Late in the 3rd qtr with the Texans now trailing by 10, Mahomes is keeping his guys focused, Watson is sulking by himself on the bench.

I’m a Texans season ticket holder and Watson is fantastic, will win us a lot of games. But he has 0.00% leadership ability, unless something fluky happens, he’ll never win us a Super Bowl…..he’s Cam Newton, Matt Ryan, etc….all the talent in the world, but no leadership…..Mahomes has “it”.

  22. Watson has been fake before. Plays the nice wholesome roles Remember his online dalliances?

  23. The real question is how would Watson or Mahomes perform in Nagy’s piss poor second year offense. The first year wasn’t that good neither, but a lot of Mitch’s problems revolve around poor coaching and horrid play calling. Mitch can scramble just as well as Mahomes or Watson, however he can’t read defenses (coaching problem) and he over throws the ball too much out of fear of throwing an INT (another coaching problem.)

The Bears switched from Cutler throwing INTs to Trubisky over throwing his WRs by 10 yards.

In Chicago not having a star franchise QB is the way of life, I could care less at this point. At least we haven’t had a QB like Matthew Stafford for example, for over a decade and can’t even win one playoff game. Even Jay Cutler won a playoff game with far less talent than Calvin Johnson.

Seattle has some names to add. Brian Bosworth, Rick Mirer

  25. That’s because he’s no good. The next time he wins a big game in the NFL will be the first. This ain’t college.

  26. “I believe the Lions record against Matt Nagy is 0-4.”

That would be Matt Patricia’s record specifically, who absolutely BLOWS, but thank you for pointing it out nonetheless.

No way Detroit finishes ahead of anyone in our division. Not with our coach and front office. We’ll be picking in the top 5 again next year, book it.

  27. I’m a big fan of Watson’s. That being said, this is inexcusable. The context of his comment was insinuating that the Bears didn’t talk to him because he is/was a black quarterback. He was responding to a tweet that flat out said Mitch was picked ahead of Mahomes and Watson because he’s white.

There’s plenty of real Injustice in the world. Let’s not resort to making things up. And lets be honest, he made it up. He didn’t forget or misremember. The way he said (or rather, typed) the comment says as much.

  28. Watson is a flake. He thinks he’s in the same class as Mahomes and he’s not even close.

  29. I’m sure the Bears talked to Watson. They talked to every QB except Trubisky to throw the rest of the NFL off.

    They sure sure fooled them!

Watson is the least of the problems in Houston. Bill O’Brien is a terrible coach and as long as he’s there Houston will never sniff a Super Bowl. Take Watson off that team and they’ll be lucky to win 4 games.

  31. No doubt about it. the Bears made the biggest doo doo move in the draft since the Raiders drafted first and selected JaMarcus Russell. I wonder how Bear fans feel, knowing they could have had Deshaun Watson or Patrick Mahomes.

  32. In Nagy’s offense, even Jurgensen would look mortal. DeShaun is, bizarrely, lying but he should thank his lucky stars he didn’t end up in Chicago (though it is a great city with terrific fans.)

  33. While I ONE THOUSAND PERCENT believe that Bears GM Ryan Race….err…I mean Pace, still bought into white QB stereotypes in the year 2017 (pathetic, we know), I also think that Watson is just miserable in Houston.

You would be too if you played for a psychotic GM/Coach like Bill O’Brien, lol.

  34. “Seattle has some names to add. Brian Bosworth, Rick Mirer”

Can’t really blame them on Mirer. In a 2 QB draft, the Patriots took Drew Bledsoe first and Mirer is a guy that even had Bill Walsh convinced that he’d be a star quarterback in the NFL.

  35. Of course fabricated an outrageous story… he wants attention… that’s what all these pathetic millennial crybabies do to get attention.

  36. The whole league got it wrong end of the story. Had they collectively made an accurate prediction of how good Mahomes and Watson would become, 2 teams would have traded the freaking farm to dragt them 1 & 2.

  37. Watson seems to have a bit of an ego. Lets see how he does without Hopkins bailing him out on those poorly thrown long balls that prop up his stats.

  38. Everyone here needs to calm the hell down! He’s a kid who likely forgot about that in the swirl of activity. And who knows how extensive that discussion was.

This isn’t newsworthy! The fact that the Bears junped up that high and passed him AND Patrick Mahones is! Let’s focus on the REAL failure here!

  39. The lie was before the draft. Like many players before the draft reports are saying he lied then as leverage to improve his draft status. This is no different than free agents trying to make it look like more teams are interested in them to drive up the market for themselves.

Yes, they are no different. Both are lies designed for personal gain–one money and the other sympathy.

I will argue that you’re wrong to my grave because I never once in my 59yrs have had a “one year wonder” listed as the top QB prospect, NEVER and as a matter of fact I argued with people that these “one year wonders” shouldn’t even go in the 1st round, NEVER! They don’t have the one thing that I believe is needed for a QB to go in the 1st round of the NFL draft and make it in the NFL = experience. Also I’ll make the case that Trubisky should have been a 3rd rounder at best because he couldn’t even beat out Marquise Williams for the starters job at NC and didn’t get the starters job until Williams left, if you can’t beat out Marquise you damn sure don’t deserve to be a 1st round QB let alone the #2 overall!

BTW I had Watson as the top QB on the board that draft and Mahomes as a late 1st or 2nd rounder because of his horrible 12-13 record as a starter his last two years at Texas Tech but I know how desperate these QB needy teams are. BTW it must be the Reid’s coaching because Mahomes was never that good in college!
