Florida governor: Teams that can’t play in their states are welcome here

Florida Governor Ron DeSantis says his state is ready, willing and able to welcome any NFL teams that can’t operate in their own states.

Amid talk that California and some other states won’t lift restrictions in time for the NFL season, DeSantis is positioning his state to be the temporary home of those teams. DeSantis said he is reaching out to commissioners of professional sports leagues to let them know it can work.

“If you have a team in a league in an area that just won’t operate, we’ll find a place for them here in Florida,” DeSantis said.

DeSantis said Floridians support sports taking place again.

“Our people are starved to have some of this back in our lives,” DeSantis said. “I think we can certainly do it in a way that’s safe.”

The UFC has already had one event in Florida and will have two more in Florida this week. There’s also been talk that Major League Baseball could play at spring training sites in Florida, starting in July. And if the NFL can’t have all 32 teams playing in their home stadiums, DeSantis would clearly be very interested in having additional teams play in Florida.

  1. Are you kidding me? Any owner should demand to see the actual Florida COVID-19 death count, including at senior services residential facilities.

  2. It’s funny how the media has crushed DeSantis and praised Cuomo. One is doing a great job and the other is doing a terrible job.

If you’re scared, stay home. The rest of us have a life to live.

  4. Others countries that opened up had big spike within a week, Training camp will be the season.

  5. This is awesome and the way it should be. States like California need to get a clue or become their own country. Can’t live in fear the rest of your life. FEAR. I feel sorry for the people in those states.

  6. “If you’re scared, stay home. The rest of us have a life to live.”

Yes, what a macho attitude– go out, by all means and infect everyone else for the sake of football. Make it impossible for those Americans at the most risk (over 100 million) to live any life at all and to be locked away even longer.

If America is known for anything now it’s supreme selfishness.

  7. Football’s pretty much a cold weather sport. The whole NFL should just move to Siberia for this season.

  8. No one is surprised there are those who intentionally conflate fear with knowledge. What’s sad is certain media outlets taking advantage of this display of extreme ignorance.

    Except Sweden.

All states have a public web site – Florida lists all that info. Get the facts – google it. And is low.

  11. CA is going to learn the hard way that unilateral, overreaching decisions have economic consequences.

No. Supreme selfishness is putting 20 million people out of work and starving because the relatively few (nowhere near 100 million)at risk won’t stay home. If you’re not at risk the best thing to do is go out, contract covid, RECOVER and donate your antibodies.

  13. Good for Florida and DeSantis. It’s good to see some governors using common sense and realizing that perfection (no deaths and no risks with the economy shutdown) is not feasible, and that a phased in opening of the economy while protecting those at greatest risk is the best way forward.

Other states will follow because if they don’t, their citizens will revolt. California, whether Newsome likes it or not, will reopen because he won’t have a choice. Besides, there is just too much tax revenue which will be lost if three NFL teams play zero games in California this year.

  14. As a resident of one of the states that’s dragging out shelter protocol, I say good on DeSantis. Personally, I would not want to risk anything and would stay home, but I’m not everyone. Let the public weigh the pros and cons for their own personal situation and act accordingly. If this done green light, I hope folks that do venture out for sports take safety protocols seriously.

  15. “Except Sweden”

Sweden had worse then almost every state in the us with a similar population…

  16. Good idea. Put all the flag waving, government is overreaching, Constitutional loving hypocrites in one stadium all at once. Let’s see how tough you really are.

  17. “Except Sweden”

Sweden’s death rate is about 32 per 100,000, compared with 24 in the U.S. and roughly 9 in neighboring Denmark. (Bloomberg News, May 12)

  18. That is literally one of the stupidest things I have ever heard. DeSantis is an idiot.

  19. Stay out of Vegas. We are still under construction.

Building the next super bow champion.

  20. Surprised that he didn’t throw in “and you recall there is no state income tax”. To really ring the dinner bell.

  21. What is Desantis going to do when the Canadians can’t buy heath insurance to travel to Florida?

  22. DeSantis only sees the financial benefit and an opportunity to earn votes. He also recognizes the risk he would be taking won’t directly affect him.

No income tax in Florida, what benefit financially?

  24. In perspective, Florida is a good choice.
Baseball already has an infrastructure there with many spring training facilities throughout small cities within the states.Small cities that remain almost unaffected in comparisin to their larger major league cities.
The MLS and NBA are looking at the expansive ESPN Wide World of Sports to hold their seasons for man or all teams of their leagues, quarantining teams and their families on Disney properties.

No reason the NFL can’t be handled in a similar fashion.
Due to tourism, Orlando has the hotel rooms and amenities to accomodate families. Daytona has shown it can handle 100,000 plus sports fans during Speed Weeks. Stadiums are available such as the Citrus Bowl/Camping World Stadium where the Pro Bowl us held – as well as Stadiums at UF and FSU where the Gators and Seminoles play.

The CoronaVirus for the most part has really affected the SE tip of FLORIDA (West Palm Beach to Miami). Some FLORIDA counties have only seen 25-30 cases since March. Orlando/Tampa/Daytona combined have less cases than Dade County. So while there are places across the country suffering worse scenarios, Florida as a whole, has been relatively spared.
DeSantus is wise to offer what we have to offer with a clear conscience.

  25. Oh yeah, real logical. Invite all the sick peoples from NY and NJ to come down to Florida and spread around their germs supporting the formerly local teams.

CDC recommends against face palms. You could contract covid.

State numbers in Florida are questionable at best. Florida is known to be suppressing actual numbers from counties and posting their own numbers which are significantly lower.

That plus it’s dumb to needlessly extend orders way down the line rather than just incrementally extend if necessary. In this climate July is like a 100 years from now but LA has already extended their stay at home until then in a totally unnecessary move bound to cause issues.

If you are at home, how can someone else infect you? And just for the record, for how long exactly do you expect us all to “stay home”? This started with a goal of “flattening the curve” so as not to overwhelm hospitals. With only a few exceptions, hospitals are underwhelmed……so why are we still staying home?

Florida is the world’s laughing stock – what could possibly go wrong?

    ———

Florida has a larger population than NY and has handled this situation with a mild approach when compared to NY. And yet NY has 1/3 of the total Covid19 deaths in the entire country with 66% of people infected at home! It looks like Florida has it right.

  31. Before Florida started to reopen I would read stories that they would see an exponential jump in cases and deaths confirming the worst fears of those who want everything locked down. I check the Florida numbers every day, and there has been no catastrophic spike. It’s hard to see there has been an increase at all. The Florida governor has been proven right so far.

  32. Wearing a mask or staying home is a show of respect for other people, which explains why conservatives don’t want to do it.
