Frank Reich “very optimistic” Philip Rivers will spend multiple years with Colts

Philip Rivers has lined up a high school coaching job for when he retires from the NFL, but Colts head coach Frank Reich doesn’t think he’ll be spending all of his time on the sideline in 2021.

Rivers signed a one-year deal with the Colts as a free agent this offseason and hasn’t made any concrete plans about playing beyond this season. During a Monday conference call, however, Reich said he doesn’t think that Rivers plans to be one-and-done in Indianapolis.

“I can just tell you I really believe it’s Philip’s intent to play multiple years . . . I’m very optimistic it will be a multiple year thing,” Reich said, via Zak Keefer of TheAthletic.com.

Jacoby Brissett is in the final year of his contract, so the belief that Rivers will be back likely impacted their other offseason decisions at the position. They drafted Jacob Eason in the fourth round and may have addressed the need for a young quarterback earlier if they were convinced Rivers would be moving on after one year with the team.

  1. Philip Rivers (veteran)
Jacoby Brissett (played very well until injured last year)
    Jacob Eason (rookie)
The forgotten guy, Chad Kelly, who has skills & could still break out.

On paper, not a bad scenario for the Colts as the roster stands today. Other positions concern me more, and that’s nice to be able to say after Luck’s departure.

  2. Phillip Rivers is done as good quarterback. His skills and decision making have declined significantly. I don’t believe he will have a good season. The decision to sign him represents gross incompetence. The team should be thinking about grooming a young quarterback for the future. Brissett is a better player than Rivers.
I don’t see this ending well.

  3. Philip Rivers will roll with the Colts O line. Watch. The “LA” Chargers screwed up….again.

  4. P Riv has clearly lost some zip. Zip doesn’t come back.

I give him one year as starting QB in Indy, two tops.

  5. Tantamount to an admission that Brissette is not the answer at QB if they are rolling with Rivers for multiple years and just drafted a QB. Beware of Belichick’s cast offs.

  6. The forgotten guy, Chad Kelly the 4th stringer? There’s a reason he is forgotten.
