Matt Nagy: Zero agendas, complete honesty in QB competition

When Bears head coach Matt Nagy discussed the team’s quarterbacks during a conference call last week, he said the team’s quarterback competition won’t be taking place over Zoom.

Given the fact that there’s no other way for offseason work to take place, that will push the battle between Mitch Trubisky and Nick Foles to the summer. In a conversation with Albert Breer of SI.com, Nagy reiterated that Trubisky will be taking the first snap once they do get on the field and vowed that things will take their course from there without any preconceptions about who will wind up on tip.

“Mitch isn’t gonna be able to do it [in the spring], and Nick isn’t gonna be able to do it,” Nagy said. “So it’s gonna be very important, in whatever time we’re given — it’s just a fact, there’s just not going to be as much time for that to naturally happen — for us to see it. It’ll all play itself out. And because there’s zero agendas in this thing, because there’s complete honesty, it’s very healthy. Credit to both of these guys, Mitch and Nick, they’re both really good people.”

The nature of this offseason means there won’t be much time to ease into things once the Bears do get to the field. That should provide an advantage to the quarterback who gets off to the best start as opposed to the one who starts first.

  1. Nagy needs to stop talking. Just like the “offense” he like to use, he isn’t fooling anybody , we all know you brought Foles in because you think the problem is all Trubisky and not your game planning.

  2. Nagy’s doing a better job than Gruden.

He has 20 wins and Gruden has 11 since returning to the Raiders.

The Bears got Nagy and Mack and went from worst to first. WE still can’t finish above .500 in Vegas, but we might in a couple more years.

    Also Foles > Trubisky = Carr/Mariota

  3. In this division, The Bears can’t afford to lose 2 or 3 games, seeing if Mitch has got it or not!!
If this is the course Nagy is taking, then our season will be over…

You make a good point here. The Raiders are paying Gruden almost $2M per win!

  5. Full transparency in quarterback competition. “I am stuck with two mediocre quarterbacks and few skill position players. Full transparency they all suck and I am going to lose my job.”

  6. “Nagy’s doing a better job than Gruden.

He has 20 wins and Gruden has 11 since returning to the Raiders.”

But what you forgot to mention is that the Raiders are trending up while the Bears are trending down. That 12-4 Bears season is looking more and more like fool’s gold. Gruden/Mayock purposely tore the team down so they could build it back up the way they wanted. The Raiders have improved their talent every year under them.

  7. Whatever Foles does for the rest of his NFL career, he can always say he outplayed Brady in the biggest game.

  8. “Nagy’s doing a better job than Gruden.

Nagy inherited a very good, top 10 defense, and added Mack to it. The 12-4 2018 bears were a hell of a defensive team but he Nagy offense was bad. Last season the defense fell to middle of the pack and the offense was still bad and they ended 8-8 with an easy schedule.

  9. As much as Nagy’s been trashed, including for his method of hiring a kicker — that process did seem to work out in the end I guess. Maybe this one will too.

  10. as in an earlier post: Mr. Nagy STOP talking and let you team’s field performance speak volumes.

  11. The Bears have squandered all of their opportunities! Mostly because of Pace. Nagy’s ego doesn’t help. Getting washed out scrubs on offense won’t do it either. Drafting a 3rd/4th round talent in second round hurts too. TE was a super weak position in the draft but reached on the best TE in a weak class. Their oline won’t be opening up any holes for either running back.

By that logic any 1-15 team that goes 3-13 is doing better than a 12-4 team following a 15-1 season.

You can go ahead and “feel good” about how your team is “trending”

    I’ll take a winning team.

Another thing about the “tear them down before you build them back up” theory of building a championship team…

EVERYBODY can do the “tear them down” part.. Let me know when Gruden actually starts to succeed in the building the “championship” team.

So far he cant even get them to the “win more than you lose” part.

  14. The Bears will sweep my Lions and the Vikings for the third straight year. The Bears are going to win the division.

  15. Gutless Raiders and Lions fan. You’re sooooooo pathetic and know absolutely nothing about the NFL. Consistently WRONG on here with your goofy pipe dream comments. LoL!

  16. Die hard delusional Bear fan with 20 profiles pretending to be a Lions fan. Kinda pathetic! Just like the Bears this year…pathetic. Was Mack worth it for double doink?

  17. I love how you’re calling me out for the pathetic name change move that I learned from you.

You’re a fan of multiple teams, you’re not a real NFL fan, you’re just a kid living in your mom’s basement regurgitating local Detroit Lions and Raider news and you think you’re soooooo smart. lol.

Get ready for another third consecutive sweep on your Lions kiddo.

  18. Was Mack worth it for double doink?

Last i checked Mack, Trubisky and Nagy are undefeated against the Lions and the Vikings for that matter. They beat and are undefeated against 2/3rds of their division since Mack got there. Sound like it was worth it.

Was making the playoffs three times and failing becaause of Stafford’s turnovers worth keeping him for over a decade?

A Lions fan trashing the Bears is probably the most comical thing I’ve seen on here, next to a (permanent sub .500 team )Raiders fan of course.

  19. You may want to look at Stafford stats from last year. Top 5 in nearly every stat. The Bears have NEVER had that happen. I fully expect him to light the Bears up game 1.

  20. I don’t mean to interject into this non-sense, but claiming a QB is top 5 in almost every stat when he finished in last place with a 3-12 record last season, 6-10 in the 2018 season (on top of three playoff losses in his stale career) is probably the dumbest statement I have ever heard.

It’s common knowledge Stafford pads his stats and the buck stop there, completely overrated and fragile. I’m not a Bears fan, but their defense is probably why Stafford’s back is broken. Also claiming that Stafford will light them up is a serious and clear sign of over confidence, boarding on insanity.

  21. A real Sophie’s choice. Start Mitch and draft Trevor Lawrence #1 overall, or start Nick (until he gets hurt) and go 6-10? The latter will give them the opportunity to trade up and reach for back-up QB again.

  22. I’m sure you would take Mitch or Foles over Stafford too. And yes , before he got injured and snapped his 136 consecutive game streak he was in the top 5 in virtually every QB stat. You should look it up but you won’t.

  23. Everybody knows that this is a total lie meant for public consumption. Remember how the Bears unceremoniously dumped Glennon for Turdbiscuit?
