Adam Thielen: I probably wouldn’t be in NFL if I was a rookie in this year’s situation

One of the many talking points that has accompanied the move to a virtual offseason program amid the COVID-19 pandemic has been the impact it will have on undrafted rookies trying to make teams.

With no spring work on the field, they’ll have limited time to make an impression whether camps open on schedule or not. There were also no rookie minicamps featuring tryout players looking to catch the eye of a team.

That’s what Vikings wide receiver Adam Thielen did in May 2013 after finishing up at Minnesota State. He didn’t make the team, but landed on the practice squad before breaking through the next season. Thielen doesn’t think that’s how things would have played out for him under present conditions, though.

“Honestly, I probably wouldn’t be in the NFL if this would’ve happened my rookie year. It’s kind of crazy to think about those things,” Thielen said, via Jeff Wald of FOX9 Sports.

There are a lot of players hoping for the same kind of opportunity that Thielen created for himself, but they’ll have to do it under a shorter timeline this summer.

  1. Not one person will disagree with this statement that has a functioning brain.

  2. The chances of making it in the NFL through a rookie mini-camp tryout are miniscule. It’s highly unlikely that someone who would have gone that route would try it next year. Too bad somebody may have missed out on his dream because of this.

  3. Perhaps we need more overt incentives for teams to hire white receivers, so they’re not so at risk of falling through the cracks. After all, white receiver representation is far lower than that of white coaches & managers, and shouldn’t it be more consistent?

    (Rhetorical/thought exercise there.)

  4. He probably wont be in the NFL for long after defenses realize they don’t have to worry about Diggs and start putting some pressure on Thielen.
Catches wont come as easy when he’s got somebody covering him.

He plays for the Vikings, so he’s not really in the NFL anyway.

Hilarious. You should worry about the inevitable dumpster fire brewing in that dump you call Green Bay. Aaron isn’t happy….get your popcorn ready!

Against the bobble head packers 43/570 yards two TDS and just for fun 134 rushing yards. Ouch

Thielen was sixth in the NFL in contested catch rate in 2017 so he’s proven he can catch the ball when he’s covered. He’s also one of the best route runners in the NFL so he isn’t covered very often. The notion that teams weren’t covering him because there was another good wide receiver on the field is ludicrous.

  8. Thielen’s right. And, love would’ve been an undrafted player looking for a team if it weren’t for gb.

Adam Thielen will be 30 years old before games start and has had four games over 70 yards receiving out of his last 18 regular season starts. Maybe he’s already had his peak.

    Zzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzz

Thielen has been figured out and it only promises to get worse this year. In examining the aftermath of the 2019 two-game sweep the Packers earned over the Vikings in LaFleur’s rookie season as an NFL coach, Thielen had zero TD’s, 2 yards rushing, and five receptions.

    Scoreboard.

I guess we’ll just skip over his 7 catches for 129 yards in a playoff game last year because it doesn’t fit your narrative.

Okay he’s five out of 20, brings him up to 25%. Happy now?
