Mike Pettine remains disappointed in run defense in NFC title game

A hundred and twenty-five days have passed since the 49ers rushed for 285 yards on 42 carries in a 37-20 victory over the Packers in the NFC Championship Game. Packers defensive coordinator Mike Pettine remains disappointed.

Pettine spoke to the team’s beat reporters Friday for the first time since the 49ers ran over his defense.

“I can’t use any other phrase other than beyond disappointing,” Pettine said, via Ryan Wood of packersnews.com. “It’s tough to realize that we played our worst game at the worst time. But at the same point, we own it. We’re not running away from it. I mean, we went through it in detail with the staff. We talked to the players about it. There’s no excuses being offered. We just weren’t good enough in every aspect, whether it was scheme, effort, energy, technique.

“The key thing is to learn from it so it doesn’t happen again.”

Pettine kept his job, returning to Green Bay for a third season. Now, he is charged with stopping the run without significant personnel upgrades.

He said run defense will be a “huge point of emphasis” during training camp, with Pettine stressing the need for sound gap control.

  1. I’m sorry he’s not over it. Neither are the fans. Short leash for Pettine I hope.

  2. Remember last year when the Packer fans on here were laughing about the Vikings doing nothing to improve their team over the offseason? The Packers have done literally nothing except alienate their best player this year.

  3. Maybe its not so much as the players on the field but the game plan itself. You were out coached.

  4. And they haven’t made any moves to improve the run defense at all. Or their receiving corps. Very odd.

  5. Maybe Pettine should investigate the fatigue factor by the total lack of offense in the first half.

58 yards total offense, 3 punts, a sack, one lost fumble and an interception led to less than 11 minutes on offense and over 19 minutes on defense.

It wasn’t until the 49ers, up 27 – 0 in the first half, went in to a prevent defense in the second half that Rodgers was able to do anything.

    A: No.

The Packers have done literally nothing except alienate their best player this year.
A: Not according to Rodgers. He sure doesn’t sound alienated, unless you’re one of those guys that thinks they know how he thinks and feels about things better than he does, and there’s a lot of those guys.

  7. No need to worry. I’m sure the Packers addressed the need for defense in the first couple rounds of the draft along with a receiver.

They let their leading tackler sign with the Giants…

Martinez had more combined tackles than the other 3 linebackers on the team combined (the Smith “brothers” with 56 and 55 and Goodson with 37 for a total of 148 compared to Martinez with 155).

Even if true it’s gotta suck being. Vikings fan knowing your team has got a 2nd place finish to GB at best in the division. And then the idea that Gutekunst went up and got the team’s 3rd stud QB in a row while your team is stuck with Kirk – now that’s really gotta sting. I can see why you’re so salty.

  10. What about the whole season? This was not a problem that just magically appeared in that game.

  11. We just weren’t good enough in every aspect, whether it was scheme, effort, energy, technique.
    ____
Blaming effort and energy in a conference championship game?? Wow. Says a lot about the team culture

  12. Blaming technique at the end of the season? I am glad he is still the coach

  13. Funny to see Viking fans in here smack talking when their team put up a whopping 10 pts against the niners in an embarrassing loss just the previous week. But awareness has never been their strong suit.

  14. It was a bad loss for sure pkrlvr but the packers loss was complete embarrassment 27-0 at the half . Never in the game and then the packers did, what the packers usually do score cosmetic points in a game already determined. Funny you brought up awareness all the while ignoring cult member attitude of packer fans. Fans of the uniforms not the NFL game.

  15. It’s funny. I forget where the Vikings were the day the Packers were playing the 49’ers in the NFC title game. Can anyone refresh my memory?

  16. Viking fans… You did nothing to get better either. Rookies, as a whole, suck their first season. You might have drafted 400 rookies this year, but a small percentage will be any good in the long run. As far as GBs D and WR group, they’re young and (the WRs) were in the first year of a new system. GB lost an incredibly overrated ILB in Martinez (a million tackles 7 yards beyond the LOS isn’t something to brag about) and replaced him with a guy that’s familiar with Pettine’s system. Kirksey actually thrived in his system in CLE. They brought in an experienced slot WR for dirt cheap as well. Gute has also done a great job bringing in FAs. So, unless he starts imitating Viking level FA acquisitions, you shouldn’t criticze all that much. Bunch of goofballs, I tell ya! And as far as GBs performance in the NFC champ game, that’s all on Pettine. They have the personnel, but dumbass refused to change his gameplan. That we a big issue with him; he doesn’t adjust well in-game. It took him till half way through the 3rd Qt to bring in an additional DL. He wants to stop the pass, which is great and all, but not when your opponent doesn’t throw the damn ball.

Like you? You’ve spent two years now telling us how Thielen, Diggs, Cousins, et al. are feeling in the Vikings locker room. Pot meet kettle.

    ___
I would not say as a whole rookies suck rather few will have an impact in their first year. Not saying a few won’t just history says only a few will. This class is probably more for next year. And while some teams draft better than others the draft is a bit of a crap shoot. That is where having many picks helps. Yes percentages.

    +++++

Davanta Adams, David Bakhtiari, Kenny Clark, and probably Aaron Jones and Jaire Alexander are all better than Aaron Rodgers at this stage of his career.

    In my opinion.

Which is why we knew Zimmer had reached his peak when the Vikings got their doors blown with a chance for a home Super Bowl on the line. And now Cousins has the keys to the franchise. Good luck!

  22. No wonder Montravius was mad and tried to fix it himself smoking marijuana. Lol, it’s going to be worse this year.

  23. If it seems like the Green Bay Packers are always on the right end of officiating controversies and get all the calls, well, the statistics back up that perception. No NFL team benefits more than Green Bay from penalties for and against.

Which stud is that? Flynn, Kizer, Hundley, Callahan, ????
Love hasn’t even had a NFL practice and he is the latest 3rd stud in a row?
    LOL

You seem to forget that the score in the first half was 14 – 10 in favor of the 49ers. It took the 49ers the whole game to score 27 points. The Vikings weren’t hopelessly out of the game at the half like the Packers were in the two games against the 49ers last year.

Remember what the Packers offense led by Aaron Rodgers did in the first half (in either game against the 49ers)? In the regular season game, Rodgers fumbled the ball on the opening drive and things only got worse from there. Rodgers only had 104 total yards on 33 pass attempts in the whole game. Rodgers was sacked, had a lost fumble and threw an interception in the playoff game. The Packers never sniffed the endzone in the first half.

It was only in the second half, with the Niners already having a 23 or 27 point lead, that Rodgers, against a prevent defense managed to move the ball.

In the playoff game, the Packers knew they had no chance before the game started. Rodgers did kind of manage to pad his personal stats in the second half so Packer fans like you could puff out your chests during the offseason though.

I think Gute and LaFleur watched those 2 performances against SF last year and realized the mistake that Gute made by giving Rodgers that costly extension (when Rodgers was already signed through the 2019 season) and decided they needed to draft his replacement in the 2020 draft.

Had they decided to look for Rodgers future replacement in 2018 instead of resigning him 2 years early, at pick 18 in the first round, Lamar Jackson (pick #32) was still on the board. The Packers could have moved back in the draft, gained an extra pick or two, and had a great development QB on the roster to back up Rodgers. Would have been a better backup QB in 2018 than Deshone Kizer…

First round pick to costly for the Packers in 2018? How about a 3rd rounder like Mason Rudolph? He went #76 and the Packers could have easily moved up from pick #88 (where they drafted legendary Packer LB Oren Burks).

Yes, the decision to extend Rodgers back in 2018 has had serious ramifications and it showed with the panic Packer draft of 2020.

  26. Mike Pettine:”The unit we are going to trot out there day one are all going to be very experienced in the system”

Teams that have the above are going to be putting up W’s this season and teams that don’t are basically looking to 2021, because 2020 is not going to go well for them.

Extremely abbreviated offseason and this team is going to be one of those teams ready to go out and get W’s starting September 13th.👏💪👍

  27. It was a bad loss for sure pkrlvr but the packers loss was complete embarrassment 27-0 at the half
    ——
It was an embarrassment, which is why you don’t see me trolling Viking articles.

  28. I wonder if the Packers will be able to effortlessly sweep the division again this year.

  29. Since Rodgers became a starter in 2008, the Packers’ average rank in net differential from penalties incurred or awarded is 12.17. The Vikings’ average rank is 12.92. They’re side-by-side in a virtual tie. These are facts, not opinions. The conclusion that can be drawn isn’t how lucky the Packers are, it’s that Viking trolls are whiners.

  30. The biggest difference among all NFCN teams and their expectations for success in the upcoming season (TBD,) remains to be Aaron Rodgers. Nothing has changed. All the “predictions” we’re subjected to are the same from last year, and some (demise of the Packer team in-general,) we’ve been hearing every year for nearly three decades. Last year the Packers had a rookie NFL coach, a completely new offensive scheme, a significant number of new faces in the front office, an inexperienced group of receivers requiring Rodgers to seek his fourth and fifth options, successfully and often. Rodgers stepped up, again, and led the team to an over-achieving 13-3 record while sweeping the division in the process. Not easy on any front. This pandemic is an advantage to teams with little change in their rosters. This group of Packer players remains relatively unchanged and has had a full year of working together. Teams with high degrees of expectation from critical new rookies will have a much longer adjustment period.

  31. Yep, the 49ers had a great game plan running the ball against the Pack … to bad they left that plan in the locker rooms of GB, while playing the Super Bowl.
