Pernell McPhee thinks Ravens defense is “going to be scary”

Pernell McPhee returned to the Ravens last year and helped the team earn the top seed in the AFC playoffs, but he couldn’t help them overcome the Titans in their first postseason game.

That left McPhee feeling that “what we did last year was ok, but it wasn’t acceptable” and he said that the loss to Tennessee lit a fire that made it an easy choice to re-sign with the team earlier this year. McPhee had 19 tackles and three sacks in seven games off the edge for Baltimore before a torn triceps ended his season.

The Ravens also acquired defensive linemen Derek Wolfe and Calais Campbell this offseason and McPhee thinks that the total package has the makings of an even better defense this time around.

“With the addition of Wolfe and big boy, Campbell, it’s going to be scary. I’m fired up about all the additions,” McPhee said, via the team’s website. “I can’t lie about that.”

In addition to the veteran newcomers, the Ravens also drafted linebackers Patrick Queen and Malik Harrison and defensive lineman Justin Madubuike to add even more pieces to a puzzle they hope will be difficult for opposing offenses to solve.

  1. Ravens have a good defense regularly. My team hired a supposed defensive guru last season but yet finished dead last defensively in the league. Don’t get that.

  2. Well, as a fan, I wouldn’t want any player on my favorite team to say they are going to suck.

  3. From a Ravens fan, this is on paper the best defense we have ever had and they are being overlooked because we also have the best offense we have ever had. If the rookie MLBs work out, this Ravens team is going to suffocate opponents with 4 cornerbacks who could start on any team and 1400 lbs of beast along the front 5.

DeCosta is a wizard for being able to assemble this much talent on one team.

Come on now, this defense has potential to be among the best this year, but the best Ravens defense was also IMO the best of all time, in 2000. Ray Lewis at his physical peak, Sam Adams, Siragusa, Woodson, Boulware, McCrary, McCalister & Starks on the corners, Marvin Lewis as DC… allowed just 165 points and just 970 yards rushing against that season, both still records. That defense dragged the Trent Dilfer offense to a championship.

  5. No doubt the 2000 Ravens is the best to this point, and I don’t think this team will match those stats because QBs weren’t throwing for 5000 yards back then like they are today.

Still, Humphrey & Peter’s match up to McCalister and Starks, now add the best slot cornerback in the NFL (Tavon Young) and a guy who can start on any team (Jimmy Smith) covering the third or fourth wide receiver. Add a HOF safety (Thomas) and a guy who was PFFs #12 overall last year in Chuck Clark. They still have to play, but on paper this secondary is better than the 2000 secondary.

The MLBs are not comparable obviously with two rookies, and the edge is weaker, but I think our front 3 is just as gkkd (keep in mind Brandon William’s played out of position last year, and it’s not like Goose could pass rush either), so this question will really come down to whether you take the better secondary (today) or better LB core (2000). As of today I would take the LB core, but realistically the secondary may be more important in today’s NFL.

  6. Unfortunately they will still have a high school offense that more and more teams are figuring out.

2000 and 2006 were better on paper and in reality. 2000 was ridiculous when they shut out Giants in Super Bowl (TD was a kick return). 2006 had Ed Reed, Haloti Ngata, Terrell Suggs, Ray Lewis, Bart Scott, Chris McCallister, Trevor Price (13 sacks) and Adalius Thomas – we held Manning to 5 FG’s in Playoff loss, but Offense sucked.

  8. It’s hard to argue against Lewis/Suggs/Reed in their prime, but I’d take todays defense over the 2006 (Though, give me Rex Ryan also). The 2006 defense is similar to 2000 where today’s linebackers are weaker than 2006 but todays defensive backfield is stronger than 2006. Id take todays defensive line over 2006 though; Brandon William’s/madubuike comparing favorably with Kelly gregg/ngata (ngata was a fan favorite but never developed into a pass rusher), Calais Campbell comparing favorably with Pryce, and Wolfe/McPhee almost certainly better than Edwards/Bannan.

Again the question comes down to the inexperience of the MLBs. If they both play good (can you imagine the vets on this team letting them not play good?), there isn’t a big enough gap in the difference of LB to trade away todays cornerback depth. Coverage sacks are going to be a real thing this year.
