Cardinals reportedly have interest in Everson Griffen

Free-agent defensive end Everson Griffen remains in a holding pattern. The 32-year-old has been linked to Seattle but not many other teams has he looks for a new NFL home.

The Cardinals reportedly have interest in Griffen, according to Jeremy Fowler of ESPN.com.

Arizona is trying to boost a defense that needs plenty of help. Given all the attention devoted to Chandler Jones, Griffen would likely see some favorable matchups and, at a minimum, one-on-one opportunities.

Chad Graff of TheAthletic.com recently explained that Griffen’s status has been influenced in part by the inability to make visits to teams. As Vikings G.M. Rick Spielman told #PFTPM in the aftermath of the draft, the door isn’t closed on a return to Minnesota; however, the Vikings lack the cap space to give Griffen the kind of deal he may expect.

Griffen has 74.5 sacks in 147 career games. He had a career-high 13.0 sacks in 2017.

  1. Griffin would be another great pickup for Arizona. The Cardinals pass rush is already going to be very very good as is, adding Griffen would give them one more strong pass rusher to add to the mix w/ elite all pro OLB Chandler Jones & OLB Devon Kennard as the starters, and Hasson Reddick will be used as an EDGE this year on 3rd downs. At ILB Arizona is loaded to between excellent top ILB Jordan Hicks, ILB DeVondre Campbell n AZ drafted a beast of an ILB in 6”3 Isaiah Simmons who can rush from anywhere. AZ has a pretty strong interior D-Line to especially after signing Jordan Phillips who had 9.5 sacks and then draft 6”5 DT Leki Fotu & 6”3 Rashard Lawerence and last years 3rd rd pick 6”5 DT Zach Allen now healthy n ready to start. On the backend AZ has a bunch of talent and more importantly they’re healthy, with a vicious pass rush up front they should have no problem locking receivers down between All Pro Patrick Peterson, excellent #2CB Robert Alford now healthy allowing 2nd year CB Byron Murphy to move into his natural position in the slot and at safety AZ has one of the best young safeties in the league in SS Budda Baker & AZ has a very good young FS who was a stud his rookie year in 6”1 Jalen Thompson.
The Cardinals defense should be massively improved it his coming season in the desert giving them at worst an above average defense.

  2. I think the Cardinals would benefit by picking up Everson Griffin. The Cards have mostly a young team. There are a lot of rookies and 2 year players. Veteran presence is always a good idea. Someone who has been ‘through the wars’ so to speak, and has tasted some success. It would be a good move.

Griffin would be another great pickup for Arizona…..bla bla bla…..

    —————

If only the real season were played on paper (based on your eternally optimistic assessment of AZ’s team and your consistency in always getting it wrong) the Cards would actually have a chance of being decent

One thing you conveniently left out is that it always boils down to AZ being “the same ole Cards”

    Year after year after year…

  4. Until Clowney signs with someone, he has been held up as the second best option by Seattle & others. If I was him, I’d wait patiently until that happens. It might add about $1M to my contract this season.

If I’m Seattle, AZ or another team in the mix, I would offer him the contract and make sure I got Him. Clowney may opt to sit out the season or wait so long that you end up missing out all together.

AZ was a perennial contender just a few years ago, it hasn’t been long since AZ won the division and then went on to the NFC Champ game. Arians won 50 games in 5 years in AZ, your entire argument is a fallacy and nothing but bull crap.
AZ lost their head coach, starting QB and a bunch of key veterans to retirement all at the exact same time at the end of the 2017 season and have been rebuilding ever since.
Arizona has built up a dangerous offense that is ready to compete for a playoff spot and are just 1 more year of building away from being a true contender in the NFC. AZ has an immensely talented young QB who has super star written all over him who is ready to really take off in year 2, AZ is loaded at WR n RB with the best WR/RB in the division and two good pass catching TE”s w/ a much improved offensive line, AZ shouldn’t have any trouble fielding a top 5-10 offense that puts up points in bunches. Keim has done an excellent job rebuilding the defense that is loaded w/ talent with several excellent well above average starters to elite all pros such as Chandler Jones, Devon Kennard, Isaiah Simmons, Jordan Hicks, DeVondre Campbell, Jordan Phillips, Corey Peters, Patrick Peterson, Budda Baker, Robert Alford, Byron Murphy should a huge leap forward going back inside his natural position AZ drafted him to play, Jalen Thompson posted a 77.3 coverage grade as a freaking rookie. Just those players alone had over 50+ sacks last season though some are new to the team. AZ has 3 excellent young DTs whom they drafted over the last 2 years and it looks like AZ will sign Everson Griffen as a 3rd down pass rusher.
The thing about rebuilding your roster is eventually it ends and you’ve built a very good team, hence the word REBUILD and AZ is at the point where all the building pays off in the form of a winning team and they won’t be going anywhere for a long time as all the key cornerstone players are young and are either in or entering their prime.

  6. It’s like a dream to see all these great things happening for the Cards, and this pickup would keep that dream going, but it’s like driving a sports car with the parking-break on, not knowing if we will actually see them in action on the field this year. The NFL isn’t NASCAR.

  7. He can help someone out but might want to look at someone who is looking to contend now. I don’t think everyone is as high on Murray’s rookie year as so many others. Few contenders that might want to give him a two year deal once they see what they have in camp.

  8. AZ sports hack say that Cards have no interest in him.. he has sources per him!!!

  9. Would be nice to have a legit potential double digit sack guy across from Jones for once. All AZ needs is a defense after that Murray rookie year, the addition of DHop and a first round graded right tackle. Simmons and several other defensive free agents, plus health and availability at CB and DE will help out already.

  10. As a Niners fan, I say please no. AZ has done some good things this offseason and they were already a handful last year. They make me more nervous than anyone else in the NFC West, to be honest.

  11. Arizona should scare Clara fans. Both games looked like Cardinal victories and they have added a lot of good pieces. The only team in the NFC West that scares Seahawk fans… the Rams.

  12. He needs to head to Seattle when Clowney leaves and get a chance at a SB ring …
Or sign for Vikes for less …

    +++++

The Cardinals gave up the 2nd most yardage (31st), 2nd most passing TD’s (31st), ranked 26th in pressure percentage despite blitzing the third most, and were 31st in the league in missed tackles.

    I don’t share your optimism.

  14. Did someone say the Cards were a yearly contender recently? Did I sleep through a decade?

I think the last deep playoff run was with Kurt Warner who has been sitting in the Hall of Fame for 2 or 3 years.

  15. Dallas has been signing/drafting DE’s with mental instability. How many other teams want that?

He owes the Vikings a team-friendly deal to stay.

And the anonymous fight picking continues through the holiday weekend.

  17. Hope to see Everson do well going back to AZ. High energy player that works his butt off and still can be effective. Wouldn’t mind some 11th hour deal that bring him to MN on the cheap, but if not AZ is a good landing spot.

  18. What fight? I’m serious. The Vikings stood by this guy and he owes them a favor in return. It should be team friendly. What’s the issue?

  19. Right – you have trashed talked him and the Vikings front office. Same as your obsession with Cousins and Thielen, your act is stale.

Well if you are going to complain about stale acts why don’t you get on Ariani, Cheese and Jeffrey once in a while, too. Thanks, in advance.

I agree, those guys should stop as should emoji boy and his multiple screen names. Just calling out Stella’s non stop hypocrisy.

  22. I would love to see Everson sign with the Vikings but whatever team that signs him are getting a good football player. I think he will have more sacks this season.

You took a positive comment about the Vikings and twisted it into a fight that didn’t exist. It’s in your blood. It’s OK. I know you can’t help it.

Many of us do. 9/15/19 at Lambeau, 21-16, 12/23/19 at US Bank, 23-10.

    Scoreboard.

  26. To the Vikings detractors credit and disgruntled vikings fans (as I am one) Letting Everson go without a real 280 LB edge rushing backup plan is just another oversight by an already cancerous regime…… Zimmer and Speilman try but they should be wearing their little buddy helmets without prejudice. I completely blame the Wilfs for letting them work behind the counter. Before my brethren attack me, how many wives have to step up and tell their husband the General Manager not to pick up anther CB in the 1st round of a draft when you desperately needed O-line help several years in a row, without threat of divorce….. She, like the rest of us knew the same thing, an immediate firing was on the table! Wait, wait…I know that’s just one mistake right? Nope, the list goes on and on. how did wasting a pick on a kicker work out….. nobody picks up kickers early in the draft, duh! Everson is a huge athletic beast the vikings did draft to replace, he will be sorely missed.

  27. Can I reach out to Viking fans and give an unbiased view. Dalvin Cook is garbage. He is soft, hurt, and just watching the big games I see no heart. Stop trying to declare him a top 5 back in any league.
