One ex-Patriot thinks Belichick will choose Brian Hoyer over Jarrett Stidham

Getty Images

As most of the NFL world comes to the conclusion that Jarrett Stidham will get the first shot to replace Tom Brady as the Patriots’ starting quarterback, one former Patriot thinks otherwise.

Rob Ninkovich, who played for the Patriots from 2009 to 2016, believes that Bill Belichick will want 12-year veteran Brian Hoyer at the helm rather than Stidham, who’s heading into his second season and played very sparingly as a rookie.

“I think Brian Hoyer will be the starter Week 1 and I say that because the quarterback position is one of the most important for reps under center, seeing defensive looks, looking at coverage, understanding the offense,” Ninkovich said on ESPN, via WEEI. “There’s no minicamp, there’s no offseason, there’s no training camp. We don’t know when that’s going to happen. So if you have a veteran quarterback who has been in the system, understands what to expect what an NFL season is like, you’re gonna want to go with a guy who has the veteran leadership [and] also what it takes to be in that building. Look, when you’re a second-year player, you really don’t realize what a season’s like as a starter. You don’t understand what it’s going to take, and not having an offseason does not help. So, Brian Hoyer will be the starter Week 1.”

Of course, Brady was a second-year player when he took over for Drew Bledsoe, and that worked out pretty well for New England. So Belichick may not be quite as averse to putting a young quarterback under center as Ninkovich expects.

  1. If you deflate the balls and illegally tape your opponents, it really doesn’t matter who is behind center. Billicheat will come up with something.

  2. Dark horse candidate that no one is thinking of for QB – Julian Edelman.

  3. Nothing’s given in NE but still unlikely since Stidham beat out Hoyer last year. If Hoyer were that much better than Stidham they wouldn’t have cut him. Admittedly could have been partly on potential and that hoyer’s still a little better now, but would be better to give the young guy with potential the chance unless he completely blows it in camp and preseason, in which case that’s why Belichick got Hoyer again and they can draft a high QB next year.

  4. And Mo Lewis will take out Hoyer in the 2nd game, and Stidham will lead the Pats to victory in the 2021 Super Bowl, and many more to follow.

  5. If Bill does that then he’ll be lucky to win 5 games. Hoyer is complete trash, Stidham at least has potential, Hoyer’s chances went up in smoke when he had a starting job and did nothing with it

  6. the wash up old QB is gone only to be replace by another wash up old QB. why TV thinks its a good idea to show lots of there games in prime time is a hard 1 to understand.

  7. I see Hoyer as starter until he gets hurt or stinks. Then Stidham’s chance will come, hopefully he can prove himself

  8. Love Nink but he couldn’t be any more wrong misreading the tea leaves in this one.

Stidham was there last year, Hoyer wasn’t. Stidham had a whole sesason to watch Bad Brady, see what to do and not to do and he was shredding the #1D in practice by December with the 1s.

Wait until Stidham gets the gameplanning treatment in games as opposed to playing with 2s and 3s in a pressason game.

Stidham will throw for more than Brady’s td total of 24 in 2020. Just watch.

I realize Nink has an allegiance to Brady, but good grief, the writing is on the wall. Stidham would need to flat line or regress to have Hoyer block his path.

  9. Stidham has thrown FOUR passes and one was a pick six.

If BB is trying to win this year it has to be Hoyer. But if they were trying to win this year they could done better than Hoyer. So it will probably be Stidham to see if he can be the guy going forward.

  10. Stidham beat out Hoyer last year for a roster spot. It would send a bad message for Stidham if he is not the starter this year. Besides, there is no chance that Hoyer could lead the Patriots to the promised land.

  11. Belichick wants to know if Stridham can be the long term QB. There is no sense in going with Hoyer. Hoyer is not a franchise QB.
If Stridham isn’t the answer then find out now and draft a new QB.
Don’t waste a year going with Hoyer then Stridham. Better to go 7-9 or 8-8 than 9-7 if it means wasting a year at QB development/evaluation.

  12. “Of course, Brady was a second-year player when he took over for Drew Bledsoe”. That’s true. But since it happened in the middle of his second season, wouldn’t that lend even more credence to Ninkovitch’s statement? Hoyer being the starter at the beginning of the season and Stidham taking over sometime during the season would be exactly how the Brady-Bledsoe transition took place.

    stop saying “pick 6”

brady threw a dropped pick 6 vs detroit in preseason 2000. did this tell pats fans the brady did not pass the eye test? Of course not.

Stidham is clearly the real deal. BB knows it and so do the players. That’s all that matters.

it has no bearing on stidham as a known starter week to week as opposed being tossed into the middle of a game out of nowhere

  14. Stidham didn’t ‘beat out’ Hoyer last year. Hoyer was a better QB than Stidham last yr. They kept Stidham because he was a cheap, young, rookie 4th round pick with possible upside. Hoyer is what he is. A backup and serviceable starter 8f needed.

  15. Belichick wants to know if Stridham can be the long term QB. There is no sense in going with Hoyer. Hoyer is not a franchise QB.
    ———————————————————————————————————-
Exactly!! Starting Hoyer makes ZERO sense. If the plan is to start Hoyer they’ll go from first to possibly worst. Stidham I can’t answer, he’s never started, but Hoyer is known. See his games in Cleveland and that’s what Hoyer is. If Stidham isn’t ready then Cam Newton would be a good signing. I know some fans hate him, but he’s a MAJOR upgrade from Brian Hoyer. Can’t answer on Stidham, he could be the next Brady or he could fall

  16. This is a cases of “another country heard from.”

Maybe Belichick will choose his dog.

After all, we’ve discovered the dog does his drafting for him.

  17. This is nonsense. Hoyer is a known commodity, we know what his ceiling is: career backup. They’ll start Stidham to see what they have in him. Every report out of the Patriots camp is that they love the kid and believe he can do it. Not everything is misdirection, chess vs. checkers and other such nonsense.

  18. To say that Stidham beat out Hoyer is not accurate, BB probably didn’t want to carry 3 QBs. Had he cut Stidham some other team was definitely going to pick him up, and Brady was more likely than not to start most of the games. Also, considering that Stidham is on a rookie deal the choice between Stidham and Hoyer was easy for BB. Also, Hoyer signed with the Pats because he believes he has a chance to start. As a Pats, I hope Stidham beats Hoyer for the starting job but I won’t be surprised if Hoyer starts week 1.

Btw, signing another veteran QB like Cam Newton is almost impossible, the Pats had to extend Chung to make cap space to sign their 2nd rounder.

  19. Apparently Ninkovich has never seen Hoyer play! If they’re going to field a QB I would rather Crash and Burn with Stidham in hopes that he gains experience and improves than watch Hoyer work his brand of “Magic”. Hoyer’s arm is not good and his accuracy is mediocre at best. If Hoyer is the starter I will know that they are tanking the season.

  20. Brady only got on the field in his second season because Drew Bledsoe got injured, not because Belichick decided to go with the young guy over the experienced guy.

  21. Tantamount to admission that Stidham is not that good which everyone who watched him in college already knew. However, Stidham may very well flourish in New England based solely on his surrounding cast. Great defense, great special teams, excellent running game, great offensive line, excellent coaching, these are just few things working for Stidham.

  22. Personally I didn’t jump to any conclusion – other than Bill will pick the right person for what he wants to do. I think Bill is ONE OF the best coaches of all time, and ONE OF the best coaches of this era (sorry, I do not think rings make one the greatest anything. Way too many variables. Some of the greatest players and coaches never got a ring). But I also do not think he can make gold out of tin. Besides, I am still not convinced he doesn’t pick up a Cam Newton on a prove it contract because one thing he is is an uncompromising winner. Like him or not, Cam is better than both of those QBs.

  23. For a hypothetical, would Brady still be the GOAT if the Patriots win the Super Bowl and the Dolphins don’t make the playoffs?

  24. Stidham beat out Hoyer last year. As a rookie with zero experience. That, despite Hoyer being the better option if Brady went down, because a vet game manager with that defense would’ve been better for a team with Super Bowl aspirations.

Stidham is going to be the starter.

  26. Hoyer stinks with no upside whatsoever…Stidham is an unknown with possible upside. If Stidham was a rookie I’d say maybe you would start Hoyer for a month until Stidham knew the playbook and calls.. But that isn’t the case here. Stidham has been there for a year and had plenty of time to show what he had in practice. Nothing to gain starting Hoyer.

  27. Stidham demolished rookie preseason records. That’s the basis for Stidham being the real deal and a better NFL QB than Hoyer last year? I almost tought you were serious for a second. Good one.

  30. I wonder if Bill is coming to the realization that he’ll no longer be able to ride on Brady’s coattails.

When you have two QBs you essentially have none. They are going to suffer mightily from the QB position this year. I can’t wait to see BB’s head explode on the sidelines.

  31. Stop with the “Stidham didn’t beat out Hoyer” nonsense. Who did they keep, and who did they cut? Exactly… and Hoyer still had 2 years left on his contract.

Hoyer has been released by 1/4 the teams in the league. There’s a reason for that. When he got his chance to start, it wasn’t out of camp… it was during the season. That was a camp that had Brandon Weeden and Jason Campbell, and Hoyer was the #3 out of camp.

He’s good for about 4 games, then can’t stand prosperity and remembers that he’s Brian Hoyer, and runs out of talent. Stay in your lane, BH.

Very few qbs I watched in preseason werre they were a lock as a good, future franchise qb.

Brady, Aaron Rodgers (vs dallas national tv game), JimmyG and now Stidham. Had it all nailed, because you know, I know the sport unlike you and your video game level logic as a little young guy.

Enjoy being embarrassed yet again, especially come later in the season where defenses have no idea if it’s a run or pass or where the ball is going because snobby Brady is no longer the qb. Anyone knew last year based on Brady’s flaws and tendencies as ripe they were, exactly what play was coming.

Stidham was shredding the #1 D in the league last December with Brady standing there watching it. Read it again if you need to.

BB likely thinks ball distribution and better game management wins the game vs both Miami and Tenn. Read THAT again if you need to.

Brady’s ego stopped him from being a great game manager and a real fan who knows the game would know that, little Teddy.

  34. NAH, Stidham beat out Hoyer and now he’s had another year to learn the playbook so I don’t believe there’s any way Hoyer wins the starting job unless Stidham falls flat on his face.

With that being said I do know one thing for sure, Bill will start the person he thinks gives them the best chance of willing, that’s the one thing you can take to the BANK! OH and Bill would never tank a season for any reason. He knows he can beat better talented teams with lesser talent, he’s been doing it for decades!

    Brady’s ROOKIE preseason. Ugh

    Reading comprehension, people!

Brady set them, JimmyG broke em in 2014 and Stidham broke JimmyGs last year with a bunch of rookies or has beens running around. It did not matter who was out there, he tore it up. Get it? Imagine what he does with a loaded RB group, a great OL, good WRs and not playing favorite and BBs gameplanning? Are you kidding me? Brady sabotaged the 2019 seaaon on the way out the door.

Only 3 qbs worked with BB daily as a plan to replace the current qb:

    Brady
    JimmyG
    Stidham

Do the math. Even BBs work with Cassel on the fly in 2008 was brlliant beyond belief, as Cassel hadn’t played 4 straight qtrs since high school.

    lol

You people will do anything to delude yourself that BB sucks, can’t personally develop qbs, when there is almost 30 years (Testaverde) of evidence that proves it.

OK let’s think about a couple of things, first off the Pats have one of the most complicated, deep and diverse playbooks in the NFL and Cam isn’t coming in and learning enough of it to start in just a few weeks of training camp and 4 pre-season games.
Secondly if Cam even thinks he starting he’s going to want to be paid and the Pats don’t have nearly enough cap space($1.33mil) to make that happen, so get the Cam to the Pats thoughts out of your head, it’s not happening!

BTW I don’t think Cam will get a job until a QB goes down, if any team would’ve been interested they’d have signed him by now.

    ———————-

Wow, how quickly they all turn on Brady. Stidham is the same QB whose only significant playing time resulted in a pick 6. Awfully high expectations for a 4th round pick who hasn’t proven anything

  45. All this talk about Stidham and the preseason? Really? He’s playing against guys who are no longer in the league. They were 3rd stringers. You know who else looked fantastic in preseason, against the starters? Nathan Peterman. Let that soak in

  46. “Brady was a second-year player when he took over for Drew Bledsoe“…Who was knocked out of the game and could not play in that game and a number that followed. Was not a choice.

  47. Ninkovich conveniently overlooks the praise and confidence that has been expressed by several of Stidham’s current teammates, who have said that he’s made exceptional progress in all facets of the position, with a strong accurate arm and mobility. Stidham’s teammates have said that — Belichick, too, in a more muted way, duh — not some suit in a studio looking to be controversial. It’s Stidham starting Week 1 for the Patriots.

  48. Hoyer’s ceiling, like any other QB his age, has been established. Unless Stiddy has a disastrous preseason, the Pats need to give him the chance to prove himself. If he can play as well as Darnold, Josh Allen, Danny Dimes, Kyler Murray, Drew Lock, Minshew did last year, then that should earn him a starting job in 2021.

  49. Stidham beat out Hoyer for the backup job last year, and Hoyer has no recent experience starting a regular season game for the pats either. Stidham has been in the system for over a year.

In fact Lewerke (UDFA) went to the same school as Hoyer, has a similar size/stat sheet and the two know each other.

  50. With technology what it is, can’t the Pats put Stidham into a modular that would let him go through all the different looks and keys. Not very hard to tell if it is zone or man. The hard part is getting the blocking and receivers to see what the QB sees and act accordingly. Interceptions happen on misreads of not only the QB but the entire team.

  51. I do think he will show more trust in the young receivers than Brady did. Heck, that was obvious last year in preseason.

Brady went from a guy that completed passes to double digit numbers of receivers a game to a guy who had clear favorites. Not saying he didn’t have good reason for that change in approach but it made them easier to defend.

  52. I’m a Pats fan and I don’t think they win more than 6 games this season. It’s gonna be a long season which is ok cause you can’t keep winning forever. The run/dynasty is over but it was a lifetime worth of winning so no complaints here. If I could change anything is I would have stuck with Brady til he retired. Give him an extension til 45 and ride this thing out until the very end.

Belichick is an all-time great coach but he is gonna struggle without Brady. He is gonna get no more veterans on the cheap. He is gonna have to hit homeruns with his drafts, which he hasn’t been in the last 3-4 years. He is gonna have to pay for top talent now cause without Brady setting the ceiling the Patriot market will now be in line with the rest of the league.

  53. The only reason I could imagine Hoyer starting over Stidham would be if the pre-season and training camps were eliminated or extensively curtailed by Covid and BB did not think Stidham was suitably prepared.

But I’d be shocked if Hoyer got the nod even under those circumstances.

I have no doubt he will be the starter for years to come….
My guess is after this year they lock him up with a team friendly contract extension that adds 6 years on to his existing 2 years…it’s a contract that will set Stidham up for life two years before he’d become a free agent & in turn allow the Pats the money( cap space) to keep surrounding him with talent for years to come…. 6 year extension 150 million with 90 million guaranteed with a 30 million signing bonus that they spread out over those 8 years keeping his cap hit at around 20 million a year for the life of his contract….WIN WIN for all parties involved!!!
It’s the contract AFTER THAT ONE that scares me a little unless they can work out a deal in year 6 or 7 on another 6 years thats reasonably team friendly as well…..
Looking forward to watching this kid tear it up!!!

By about 2/3 through that season it was a choice and was a serious debate in Boston sports media about whether he should get his job back. Bledsoe was ready to play by that point and was the highest paid player in the NFL at that time.

  63. Stidham is the same QB whose only significant playing time resulted in a pick 6.

Garbage time is not “significant time”. And the only difference between his and Brady’s debut is the defender didn’t drop Stidham’s pick 6 like Brady’s was dropped.

  64. Tampa Bay Tommy had an 88 passer rating last season. 78 if you only count the part of the schedule when they were playing good teams.

I don’t think Hoyer or Stidham should have too much trouble climbing over that mark.
