Raheem Mostert gaining muscle, planning for a heavier workload

Raheem Mostert has spent time with seven teams over five seasons, but he has only 178 carries in his NFL career. This year he expects something different.

After an excellent postseason that saw Mostert carry 53 times for 336 yards and five touchdowns, Mostert has earned the right to be the 49ers’ primary ball carrier. And he says he’s bulking up this offseason in an effort to be ready for a heavier workload.

“I’m actually gaining some more muscle, which is kind of bizarre,” Mostert told the San Francisco Chronicle. “I’m just trying to incorporate those things in my daily workouts so I’m able to take those hits and be one of those guys that are getting 200 carries. I’ve got to get prepared for that. And the only way I know how is to get bulky and stronger.”

Mostert never was a workhorse back in college, either: In his most productive season at Purdue, he had 93 carries for 529 yards. And even in high school Mostert spent more time as a receiver, return man and defensive back than he did running the ball. This may finally be the year when we see whether Mostert can be an every-down back. He’s making sure his body is ready.

  1. Working on his craft, he’ll get a nice contract in the future. Just not from the 49ers. They are going start building through the draft the next few seasons, I mean they basically have started.

Right… because teams always just let their best back go for no reason… I’d be interested to know what your sources are that indicate SF won’t try and sign Mostert to an extension.

  3. The fact that they let DeForest Buckner go, the fact that they have to pay Bosa, Kittle, still have Tevin Coleman who is a better all around RB, there DLine had 4 people who deserved extensions, yet they let the 2nd best rusher go… Cap hell looming!

  4. One gigantic beaten o-lineman’s horsecollar tackle of Bosa from behind on 3rd and 15 away from having a fat ring on his hand.

  5. 49ers are actually doing fine cap-wise. They’ll resign him or they’ll find another UFA to plug in like they always do.

Unfortunately the chiefs must’ve had the higher under the table bid.

  7. This guy doesn’t need to change anything. I don’t where he came from, but he was as good as any RB in the league. When the 49ers needed something, this guy delivered. I guarantee you his name will be coming up in opposing defensive meetings a lot more.
