Frank Reich: Chad Kelly has been a 10 out of 10 on and off the field

The Colts signed Philip Rivers to a one-year deal as a free agent this offseason and Jacoby Brissett is back to play out the final year of his deal, so the team is well-stocked with options for this season and without much certainty beyond the coming season.

While the team thinks Rivers will stick around beyond 2020, they also have to consider other possibilities. They drafted Jacob Eason in the fourth round this year and Chad Kelly returns after spending time on the practice squad and active roster last year.

Colts head coach Frank Reich said on The Rich Eisen Show that Kelly has “really worked hard at his craft and continuing to improve” since coming to Indianapolis in the wake of a guilty plea for criminal trespassing.

“Chad Kelly off the field has been as good as anybody I’ve been around,” Reich said, via the Buffalo News. “He’s been a 10 out of 10, off the field as well as on the field. I’m excited for him. . . . I cannot tell you how happy we are with Chad. He’s progressed a lot as a quarterback. He really works hard at it.”

It’s unlikely that the Colts are going to be keeping four quarterbacks, so the Colts may be a team to watch for a trade at some point this summer as they try to thin out the group ahead of final cuts.

  1. Hyping him for a trade unless you think the Colts are going to pull an Eagles and cut their 4th round QB in training camp. For the Eagles he was a 5th round QB but was still one of those “we are smarter than every one else” picks that proved that no, they were not smarter than everyone else who had him graded as a UFA.

This time of year every draft pick is a star and every team is undefeated.

  2. What else would Reich say?

As far as hyping him for a trade, Chad Kelly has zero value. Zero. Maybe that’s what Coach Reich should say.

  3. Brissett will be the odd man out, Kelly will end up being #2 by the time the season starts and Eason will impress in camp (if there is one). Rivers has been ultra durable but given his age some of the backups should see some time.

  4. That’s shoveling it on pretty thick isn’t it Frank? I haven’t heard this much bull since the latest political campaign season.

  5. Colts management loves blathering about their players & hanging participation banners. No wonder they never win anything.

  6. This is his 4th year coming up.
How likely is he to develop into a starting QB?
If his ceiling is a backup, why bother?
I’d rather draft a speculative QB in the later rounds and have him as a backup.

  7. He’s only getting second third and fourth chances because of his last name, he’s not that good at all

  8. Yes, and in 2018/2019 the Colts said they would not trade Brissett for a 1st round pick. Is there anything that comes out of an Irsay organization that is the truth? if you ask the Colts they will probably tell you ‘Two Men and a Truck’ moved the Colts from Baltimore to Indy in the dead of the night, when it was actually Mayflower.

Never? Talk about recency bias. It has been a few years, but the Colts did win the Superbowl for the 2006 season. And while they didn’t win as many championships as their talent would predict, the first decade of this century was wildly entertaining for Colts fans and is one that multiple fan bases would love to have.

  10. “Kelly will end up being #2 by the time the season starts”
    _______________

His NFL career has consisted of one single play back in 2018 and he still hasn’t thrown a regular season pass. What tangible evidence is there that he is going to be anybody’s primary backup?
