Tom Brady is out, Jarrett Stidham is in. And Stidham, despite very limited NFL experience has landed on the Chris Simms top 40 quarterback countdown.

Stidham, the presumptive Patriots starter for 2020 (and potentially beyond), comes in at No. 35.

During Thursday’s PFT Live, we took a look at several drives from Stidham during last year’s preseason game against the Giants. He showed great mobility, both lateral and vertical, an inherent sense as to when to slide while running, the ability to run the Patriots Offense efficiently, accuracy, arm strength, etc.

Does he have room for improvement? Yes. An interception thrown against the Giants came when Stidham misjudged the amount of time he had before getting hit by a defender who was pursuing him. But there’s plenty of good — including the ability while running hard to his left to control his arm and throw a soft, touch pass to an open receiver in the end zone.

To stick as the starter in New England, Stidham will have to be much higher than No. 35 next year. If he doesn’t, he’ll likely be off the list altogether come 2021. For now, though, there’s reason to believe the offense is in good hands, and reason to understand why the Patriots weren’t more aggressive when it came to trying to keep Brady around.

More from Chris Simms top 40 QBs list:

No. 40: Tua Tagovailoa

No. 39: Dwayne Haskins

No. 38: Mitchell Trubisky

No. 37: Justin Herbert

No. 36: Taysom Hill

Worst QB situation in the league.

Sure, sure. Just like they have a bad OL, RBs and WRs. LOL

You people are in for an unbelievably large rude awakening.

  2. Ah yes. Time for the old tried and true no respect card to be employed by B.B. Hey Stidham Simms says you’re #35 out of 32 starting QB’s! Go earn some respect and do your job! As stated above I believe many will be rudely awakened and the hate/jealousy will continue.

  3. This one is actually interesting. On the one hand he’s thrown for only 14 yards and an interception so how could you really have him any higher than this? On the other hand he’s probably going to be the starter for a good team that tends to make QBs look really good. And then you get into how he’s only a couple spots on this list above Taysom Hill who will never play more than maybe 5 plays a game.

  4. You’re telling me the Patriots would rather have this guy than Tua?

  5. Higher than Haskins? Based on what? The hype surrounding this kid is unreal. Brady couldn’t get it done last year with those awful receivers. The Pats defense is good enough to win 4-5 games on its own, but don’t expect better than 8-8 if Stidham starts all 16 games.

You’re telling me the Patriots would rather have this guy than Tua? Yes !!!!!!! The Pat’s aren’t interested in a frail 6ft injury prone qb

  8. Lol, what stidham hype? He’s rated 35th on this website.

As far as I can tell it’s a “let’s see how it goes” situation. Maybe he’s good enough, or maybe the pats have a bad year and luck into a good qb like Steelers did a decade and a half ago.

What you won’t see is the Patriots intentionally tanking like the Colts did. That was a disgrace to the shield.

have to say that even the clots can’t debase that —-stained shield goodell has been dragging around behind himself.

  10. Pats look content to fix their cap and rebuild. They have done aging veterans (The McCourty Brothers, Edelman), that will likely be next out the door. This looks like a true step back year for the Patriots, with the focus being on development for next season. I wouldn’t be surprised if they overachieved, but I also wouldn’t considering 6-10 a failure.
