The Chris Simms top 40 QB countdown, No. 30: Gardner Minshew II

A year ago, most NFL fans wouldn’t have known the difference between Gardner Minshew and Marvin Gardens. This year, Minshew comes in at No. 30 on the Chris Simms top 40 quarterback countdown.

The Jaguars quarterback showed plenty as a rookie, thanks to a Week One broken collarbone suffered by Nick Foles. Minshew would start 12 games, with the Jaguars going .500 in those contests. He threw 21 touchdown passes against only six interceptions. He generated more than 3,200 yards. He did enough to get the franchise to go all-in with the sixth-round draft pick as a potential franchise quarterback.

The bar is low for Minshew and the Jaguars in 2020, which is actually a good thing. It will be easy for him and for the team to meet expectations, given that the expectations are and will be so low.

If they overachieve, Minshew will secure his future in Jacksonville — and he’ll rise in the quarterback rankings as 2021 approaches. If they fail, a housecleaning may be coming for the Jaguars.

Bet the over. The addition of offensive coordinator Jay Gruden has been one of the more overlooked moves of the offseason. The offense will improve. Minshew likely will improve. And the Jaguars, while not ready to get back to the brink of the Super Bowl, will quite possibly move in a different direction.

  1. And the Jaguars, while not ready to get back to the brink of the Super Bowl, will quite possibly move in a different direction.

    Yeah…London…

  2. I’m no Jacksonville fan, but from what I saw last year, this guy does not get the credit he deserves.

On top of that, he’s really fun to root for. I hope he does well this season.

  3. 21 touchdowns to only 6 interceptions and 3200 yards in only 12 games as a 6th round rookie. Number 30??

  4. What a joke. If this guy was playing for one of the big city teams he would actually be recognized for what he accomplished last year. Instead, Murray got the recognition even though GM had better stats while playing for a worse team. If you have not seen him play do yourself a favor and check it out. He is entertaining as hell.

  5. The fact that he put up those numbers with the hapless Jags shows this rating is grossly inadequate. Not only does he make plays but he’s also exciting. I think he’s similar to Baker Mayfield without the attitude and baggage. He’s one of those QBs that you never know what he’s going to do next. #30 is so low it should be criminal. Can you imagine how good Minshew could be on a good team?

  6. I only saw him play the 2 games against the Texans, and they pretty much put a whippin’ on the Jags both times. Not impressed by what I saw, but those stats do look pretty good.

Who wants to bet this clown has JIMMYG ahead of JAREDG?

    —-

As we all saw from their SB performances….JimmyG should be ranked ahead of JarredG….way ahead.

  8. I would say its low. Not sure if I have caught all of these but you better not put Foles ahead of him. He did beat him out.

  9. Agreed, Bucky.
Chris should really be posting a leaderboard under the header to show his previous picks.

    Minshew > Dak

Everyone likes a laugh. Go to Vegas and double down on that and report back.

Not liking the guy is one thing. Day after day of pedaling nonsense waters down the mission.

  11. Minshew outplayed Sam Darnold and beat out a SB winning QB for the starting job.

  12. Chris Sims rates QB’s the same way as he played QB, which is horrendous! Gardner should be a lot higher than 30!

  13. Why doesn’t anyone talk about Minshew’s 7 lost fumbles? That makes him a 21 TD & 13 TOs. That makes him Blake Bortles with a porn-stache. I love the energy he brings to the team & the city but I’m not hopeful for the coming season based on their schedule.
