Brittany Brees: We are the problem, we are sorry

After Drew Brees apologized multiple times last week for suggesting that NFL players who kneeled during the national anthem disrespected the country, his wife apologized as well.

Brittany Brees posted a lengthy message on Instagram that featured two quotes from Martin Luther King: in the end we will remember not the words of our enemies but the silence of our friends,” and, “Not only will we have to repent for the sins of bad people, but we also will have to repent for the appalling silence of good people.”

Her own comments started with Brees writing, “WE ARE THE PROBLEM.”

“I write this with tears in my eyes and I hope you all hear our hearts,” she continued. “I have read these quotes and scripture 1000 times and every time I read it and the words sink into my heart. I think yes this is what it’s all about. Only until the last few days, until we experienced the death threats we experienced the hate did I realize that these words were speaking directly to us. How could anyone who knows us or has had interactions with us think that Drew or I have a racist bone in our body? But that’s the whole point. Somehow we as white America, we can feel good about not being racist, feel good about loving one an another as God loves us. We can feel good about educating our children about the horrors of slavery and history. We can read books to our children about Martin Luther King, Malcolm X., Hank Aaron, Barack Obama, Rosa parks, Harriet Tubman and feel like we are doing our part to raise our children to love, be unbiased and with no prejudice. To teach them about all of the African Americans that have fought for and risked their lives against racial injustice.”

“Somehow as white Americans we feel like that checks the box of doing the right thing. Not until this week did Drew and I realize THAT THIS IS THE PROBLEM. To say ‘I don’t agree with disrespecting the flag’ I now understand was also saying I don’t understand what the problem really is, I don’t understand what you’re fighting for, and I’m not willing to hear you because of our preconceived notions of what that flag means to us.”

“That’s the problem we are not listening, white America is not hearing. We’re not actively LOOKING for racial prejudice. We have heard stories from men and women we have known and loved for years about the racism that occurred in their lives stories that were never shared or talked about because somehow they were considered normal. To all of our friends and anyone we hurt, we will do better. We want to do better, we want to HEAR you, and we will fight for you because thinking we are not part of the problem is checking the box it means we are are not doing enough. It’s our job to educate ourselves. We are sorry.”

In March, Brittany and Drew Brees were widely praised after they announced they were donating $5 million to organizations that give food to the needy. Now they’re making a different kind of statement.

  1. The Brees family wants to be on the right side of history, after some persuading that Colin Kaepernick is right.

That or Brees realizes that 90% of his TDs passes were caught by a black player. In essence, they helped make him millions.

Never a wrong time to do the right thing. (even if motives are selfish)

  2. Does this family have to apologize for the rest of their life now? Brees said nothing racist at all. Tone deaf, zero to do with the actual reason people are protesting but nothing racist. I don’t agree that the Brees family has to grovel and beg for forgiveness. A real apology and acknowledgment of “missing the mark” should’ve been good enough.

  3. So what exactly do we need to change? If you say racism then point out who is doing it and they will be punished like that lady in Central Park. If it’s systemic then point out the law that is racist. If it’s unconscious bias then I guess we all need counseling and hypnosis.

  4. I’m guessing that the network that’s has already promised Drew Brees a Analyst job once he retires , is the one pressuring Brees to apologize for his comments.

  5. Great statement by the Brees. Let’s accept their apologies and begin change. Keep this in mind change will happen at the speed of trust.

  6. How did we have such a difficult time when Kaap’s sacrifice was so evident! Did people really think his actions was intended as disrespect of the flag? Why are we so addicted to “agreeing” and “disagreeing” vs listening and growth? WOW! Maybe the cognitive dissonance will lead to disillusionment on our rampant idiocy, bringing in an ‘enlightenment’ era. How idiotic “confident” and inflexible positions are ie. “never”! Now that most are hearing the message loud and clear, will this become more focused as an abuse of power issue and solution? Issue one rooted in human nature? Requiring constant diligence “power corrupts, absolute power corrupts absolutely”? Central to our responsibility as citizens to remain diligent in this regard and keep in check in all areas?

  7. Before all this, I was indifferent of Brees. Then it happened, he said what he felt and I became to really respect him as a person and leader. He then apologized, twice. I have now come to disrespect him for folding like a cheap lawn chair under the tiniest amount of pressure. Now, his wife is fueling the fire. They are catering to the loud. Not the majority, the loud.

  8. When Brees came out and said that we could never support anyone that disrespected the flag, many here were saying that he is entitled to his opinion.

But now that his opinion has changed, many here are saying that he sold out…and he’s no longer entitled to an opinion.

All Brees did was to listen…and he realized that this was never about the flag. The creature in the WH made it about the flag to divide us, but that was never the case.

Brees is entitled to his opinion….and he is entitled to change that opinion, as we all are.

  9. Damage Control to protect the brand. He seemed pretty passionate about his initial video. First one’s usually the correct one.

  10. I think I’ll take this year off from football. I have no issue with people using their fame away from the field to support their chosen cause but this year is going to be filled with self-flagellation at every opportunity during the games. Instead of enjoying the game as a distraction from daily life this will a constant theme of watching public service announcements that have little to do with the game.

  11. Guaranteed he called a PR Pro or fixer to ask what exactly to say to seem genuine about his “apology” he wasn’t sorry when he posted the original video just when backlash happened.

Exactly! If it’s not what they what to hear, then it’s not right. Many people have changed their minds in the wake of what has happened recently. Why can’t the Brees family do the same? You all said Brees folded like this is some card game. No, this is real life.
Kap took a knee to bring attention to something real and deadly. And you focus more on kneeling in front of a symbol displayed at football games. I served 20 years in the military. Once Kap spoke, I realized it had nothing to do with disrespecting the flag and I was good. It’s a shame that you people literally have more hate and disdain for Kaepernick than the cop who killed Floyd.

  13. How can Brees not be raceest he sits there and braggs to his children what a great father he is even when he payed big money to crippel players and end there carriers

  14. No! We are not the problem! We are NOT the one who tried to pass off counterfeit bills. We are not the ones who spent 5 years in prison for armed robbery! We are not the snowflakes looting and rioting!!! Do NOT take blame for something that is not deserved.

  15. I have read your statement it show reflection and finally understanding what the flag means. To dishonor the flag is to support the injustice that it stands against. It is not the posture of your body that brings dishonor it the the values you support.

  16. Mike and Chris, just want to say: you guys are doing the work. White people, maybe men in particular, need to be talking to other white people about how we continue to uphold racism. It’s our job to talk it through with other people who look like us. We are the problem. We need to stop looking away, stop pivoting/changing the subject, stop making it all about ourselves. Start listening to Black, Indigenous, people of color and then talking with our white friends and families, studying, reading and listening. The information is out there. We need to study it and talk with other white people about it. That’s the work.

  17. When will conservatives finally get it? Racism is a major problem in this country and if you don’t get it, at least TRY ago understand and have empathy for those crying out who do experience racism. Just be willing to listen and not just have a knee jerk negative reaction

  18. So now she has to take the Cersei Lannister walk of shame and bend the knee? Brees did not say anything wrong. Shannon Sharpe said it best when he said he would NEVER respect Brees. Really? By saying that, you just prove that you don’t want a dialogue, you just want people to agree with your side 100%. It’s disgusting considering how much Brees has done for New Orleans and minority communities, probably more so than Sharpe. This just proves that if you make, what one side considers a mistake, and you apologize, then you just turn into Ned Stark and they become Joffery.

  19. Here is my sincere question. If you want people to follow your movement why would you kneel for the anthem when probably half the country thinks that’s disrespectful? You say you don’t agree but half people think so and you alienate people and now they don’t care about your cause if anything they won’t even consider it until you stop the perceived disrespect and you double down. Sounds like people are looking for a confrontation instead of support. At the very least they didn’t read dale c’s book of “How to win friends and influence people “

Do you hear yourself? You are saying George Floyd deserved to be executed in the streets cause he had a counterfeit bill on him? Do you not see the HUGE problem with that? We have a justice system for when crimes are committed. Everyone has the right to a trial, we don’t sentence people to death on the streets, at least that’s the way it’s supposed to be. Clearly it’s not.

Both, not one, sides need to follow this advice. The hypocrisy is astounding.

  22. I am totally against police brutality, but recognize it is rare. So change the rules of engagement for police, prosecute the bad cops, and move on. Problem solved.

Racism is not a problem in America. Systematic racism is a myth created by liberals looking for a lever to remake us a socialist society. Defund or eliminate the police? That’s crazy!!

  23. If “we are the problem” for these instances of police brutality and murder of blacks, who is responsive for all of the murders of black people by other black people? I am seriously confused about how “some black lives matter”, depending who does the deed. Police abuse and murder of black people, white people, green people, chartreuse people must stop. So should all forms of violence against others.

  24. I don’t have problem with players kneeling during the anthem. If a war hero kneels and says a silent prayer for the friends he lost in battle we would all applaud. Same for the players. I do disapprove of obvious disrespect for the flag, like turning your back or sitting.

  25. By ‘we’ does she mean … her and her husband it is she making a blanket statement that ‘we’ is all white people?

  26. Don’t talk about sin if you don’t understand what it is. No one is responsible for the sins of anyone else.

  27. What really bothers me is that Kaepernick protested by sitting down during the Anthem and when he asked a highly respected military man what he could do better and still protest he was advised to address the flag while taking a knee and that is what he did. The media and the POTUS seem to skip over that leading to division.

As for Brittany Brees, she is being honest and basically saying as a white person you can check the box and try to teach your children about racism and educate yourself on systematic racism and understand it the best you can, but will really never truly know what it is like to be black in America.

Drew will never take a knee and explained why, but his misstep is he should have added he understands why other players do. If he didn’t understand that in the first place, he most certainly does now.

  28. sundanz56 says:
“..I am totally against police brutality, but recognize it is rare.
Racism is not a problem in America. ..”

And there’s the problem in a nutshell.
Only a person of blind privilege would even try to claim that racism isn’t a problem.

  29. The land of free speech as long as you agree with a certain viewpoint. If not, you are subject to censorship, shaming until you capitulate, or personal destruction. That’s not what the flag Brees was proud of. Sad.

  30. this is all about saving face, when he should have just stood by his comments to begin with. Be who you are. Don’t bow down to anyone, let alone the stupid public. Obviously they care too much what people think and about losing money. As me what I think. I’ll tell you, and I WON’T apologize, no matter who likes it or not.

  31. Same message as last time, typos fixed. This is all about saving face, when he should have just stood by his comments to begin with. Be who you are. Don’t bow down to anyone, let alone the stupid public. Obviously they care too much what people think and about losing money. Ask me what I think. I’ll tell you, and I WON’T apologize, no matter who likes it or not.

  32. To the Brees family: just shut up already. You’re making it worse. There was no reason to apologize in the first place. Drew went from a position of strength to groveling like a peon. Might as well retire now, because this is all anyone is gonna talk about the whole season. The NFL used to be an escape from life’s problems. Not anymore. It is being ruined by political correctness, just like this whole screwed up country. I won’t say the league is dead to me, but it is on life-support. I’ll be finding other things to do on Sundays during the Fall.

  33. Drew Brees’s mistake was giving his personal opinion in an era when that can get you in trouble. He said nothing racist. You can argue it was tone deaf. But now he is being forced to say what he really does not believe. It is perfectly ok to say that you think kneeling at the National anthem is disrespectful. It is what I believe as well. And if your employer is against it, you shouldn’t be doing it on company time.

There are so many things we can do to fix this problem. Let’s start by legalizing marijuana and releasing from prison all the men who were busted for using, not dealing, marijuana. Expunge their record.

Let’s make the police accountable by renegotiating union rules that make it almost impossible to get rid of bad cops, just as it is impossible to get rid of bad teachers. If they have more than 3 complaints (pick a number)
that are adjudicated as valid, let them be discharged.

Let’s find a way to restore self esteem in the community. Let’s find a way to make having children out of wedlock something that is not to be proud. Let’s make microloans for business available in cities like we do in Africa. Let’s lighten rules and regulations that keep small businesses from even getting off the ground such as nail salons etc. You wouldn’t believe the hoops you have to jump thru in baltimore city to start a small business.

People need hope. They need self esteem. They need to know that they can make it by the sweat of their own brow. Kids need feedback that they are valued.

What we don’t need is thought police telling us that we are bad if our opinions on how to make these things happen differ.

  34. Next step, brees will adopt an African American child to get the world off of his back.

Bye Felicia. Don’t let the door hit where the good lord split ya on the way out!

  37. We all agree the murder of George Floyd was horrible. However, in this case justice is apparently moving swiftly to hold the officers accountable for their grievous crime.

However, even the Washington Post’s own crime database stats verify that there is no “systemic” police brutality, as Kaepernick has claimed from the beginning of his protest. That claim is both a myth and a lie but the media repeats it without analysis and many people accept the lie without even considering the real evidence. Bottom line, the police interact with citizens 350 Million times per year and thankfully, horrible excesses like the Floyd murder are beyond rare.

Many on this thread who claim we need open minds and need to be able to listen will probably not even be willing to even consider these facts and publicly available stats because the truth contradicts the popular “systemic” brutality narrative. We can’t have a meaningful dialogue if people continue to hang onto lies and false narratives.

There should never be any cases of criminal abuse by police, but nationwide our law enforcement officers do a great job protecting all citizens and official stats reveal that serotonin abuse is beyond rare.

And that fact is the main problem with the Kaepernick protest that so many blindly accept, which will lead to horrible “solutions” such as defunding police departments. Then you will find out that the vast majority of police have actually greatly benefited everyone and have willingly put themselves in harm’s way to protect others.

  38. I have news for Drew and Brittany Brees….you are NOT the problem.

The problem may be that nobody has any respect for anyone that doesnt share their own opinions or beliefs…but I am not sure, otherwise I would work endlessly to stop the problem.

Conservatives have zero problem with peaceful protest when not on company time and using your employers billion dollar platform to do so. If they cared so much they could always pay for airtime to do so during the NFL games itself.
