Baker Mayfield: If I lose fans for kneeling, that’s OK

Baker Mayfield‘s offseason motto was “moving in silence.” But after the death of George Floyd on May 25, followed by nationwide protests, the Browns quarterback is speaking out. Loudly.

And, frankly, he doesn’t care what anybody thinks.

Mayfield expanded on his earlier Instagram post after receiving flak from some fans for vowing to kneel for the national anthem this season.

“Everybody so upset about my comment doesn’t understand the reasoning behind kneeling in the first place,” Mayfield wrote on his Instagram story. ”Nate [Boyer, a former NFL player and Green Beret,] and Kap [Colin Kaepernick] came to an agreement that kneeling was the most respectful way to support our military while also standing up for equality.

“I have the utmost respect for our military, cops, and people that serve our country. It’s about equality and everybody being treated the same because we’re all human. It’s been ignored for too long and that is my fault as well for not becoming more educated and staying silent.

“If I lose fans, that’s okay. I’ve always spoken my mind. And that’s from the heart.”

Mayfield’s initial post about his pregame intentions came in response to a fan who asked the quarterback to “please tell Browns fans you’re not going to be kneeling this season.” Mayfield answered: “pull your head out. I absolutely am.”

Mayfield worked out in an “I can’t breathe” T-shirt on Saturday, posting video on Instagram.

  1. A combination on kneeling and poor play will lead you with no fans and out the league in 2 years.

  2. I would like to ask the question does kneeling show gratitude and respect for Union soldiers that lost thier lives fighting against slavery?

  3. What a hero! Put him, Kapernick and Bill o Brien in the Hall of Fame immediately for their bravery and name a week on the schedule after them. Also a parade.

  4. Somebody needs to tell NFL Players and coaches that they aren’t really as important as they think they are. BTW I don’t know anybody that likes this guy right now.

  5. Kneeling DOES NOTHING FACT!!!!!!!!!!!!! Try doing good on YOUR own time. Kneeling just keeps DIVIDING US! Again just facts. But sure kneel like that solves anything. It is easier to kneel then ACTUALLY DO SOMETHING!

  6. I’ll be standing with my hand over my heart during the National Anthem. If the players, and the league want to show support for the oppressed and take a knee afterwards, I would surely participate. Kap has said it was never about the flag. So why not honor America by standing for the song, and show our solidarity after by taking a knee for a quiet 2 minutes after? I would bet a great majority would participate.

  7. If he doesn’t play to top 10 caliber, the fans will use this as a reason to ship him out. Fans will not give him as much leeway if he kneels. They’ll be way more critical of his play.

  8. No one should fear losing what they don’t have.

This is all talk. The NFL has lost many fans and will lose many more. Unlike the 12%, the 88% can live without entertainment.

Overpriced, watered down product where barely any contact or hitting happens anymore. This is pretty much flag football. What would we be missing? Heck, even if they don’t kneel, the product doesn’t appeal.

  9. Another down year and you won’t have to worry about fans. Your own team will be looking at replacing you.

  10. Mayfield do yourself a favor and watch how Chubb carries himself he keeps his mouth shut and just goes about his business getting ready for the season. When the Browns drafted you it was a repeat of the Manziel circus

  11. the NFL has lost no fans
just a bunch of loud mouth racists idiots
using this site as a chance to show just how ignorant and intolerant they can be
    Mr. Mayfied, I salute you
and am gratified to see just what a great American you are
standing up to fools and racist idiots takes courage
now, play your game and go out there and show us why you were a first round pick

But yet your on a site dedicated to pro football commenting about it. LOL.

  13. If he felt so strongly about it why didn’t he kneel last year or the year before? Sounds like someone just jumping on the bandwagon so he can somehow feel better about himself. Very unlikable guy too…..

  14. wasnt that log ago that Baker said he wasnt going to talk . oh well .so much for being seen and not heard. but he thrives on having that chip on his shoulder.

  15. What does kneeling accomplish? Not a damn thing and it alienates true Americans. I for one wont be watching in the fall if any of my Ravens kneel.

  16. If you don’t like what’s happening in the NFL, then stop coming to the site and commenting. Roger doesn’t see these comments. He doesn’t read them. He doesn’t care about them because if he did, he wouldn’t be doing what he’s doing now. So just stop generating money into the NFL machine by not clicking on NFL related things. Yes we know you’re upset that the players are thinking about their communities and their own well being ahead of football, but you don’t have time for that right now so please call your local team and cancel your season tickets already. Just stop acting like it’s worth your effort to post because this is the new way forward and Roger isn’t going to change it because an almost to all white NFL would be the laughing stock.

  17. For someone who said they are no longer gonna talk he keeps yapping. He lost Fans long ago not sure how many he has left to lose

  18. You have to have a fan base first Baker before you can lose them, so no worries there cuz 0 minus 0 still equals zero

  19. He will 100% be criticized for mentioning that he respects cops. That’s not allowed by the left-wing mob. He’ll need to post another statement now

  20. Good to see Baker Mayfield support his teammates here and take a stand against police brutality. He may lose some fans but he’ll gain some too.

  21. This reminds me so much of The Wizard of Oz when Dorothy killed the wicked witch and all the munchkins came out and felt safe. Nobody’s afraid of the wicked witch anymore. It’s ok to come out now.

  22. The same people who kneel before God think it’s disrespectful to kneel before a man-made piece of cloth?

  23. There were players who said the same thing the last time the kneeling phenomenon took place. They did lose fans. It cost the league millions of dollars. It will again.

  24. I thought the Patriots (BB and Kraft) solution to the anthem problem was brilliant. They all locked arm in arm for the anthem. It is obvious. It is a symbol of unity and support. It puts the discussion back on the topic (racism versus unity) and removes the issue of the flag. I wish more teams/players would follow that lead.

  25. Baker can still stand and everyone will think he’s’ kneeling.
As short as he is, he’ll be eye level with everyone else.

  26. I wonder if they understand that they are working real hard at lowering the salary cap as more fans say that they have had enough of politics in sports and take up new hobbies to get away from the daily grind of the real world. Less fans, less tickets lower pots of money to divide between players and owners.

  27. And if your paycheck goes down because TV Ratings drop and new TV contracts DROP in value, you’ll be like the 5 yr old kid in the cereal aisle fussing because Mom won’t buy the Boo Berry.
    Don’t be a hypocrite.

  28. Go Baker! It seems like Baker has done a lot of growing up over the off-season, and staying silent in regards to football while speaking up in regards to equality of human rights demontrates real leadership. In reading these posts, it’s amazing how many dumb Americans there are…wait, no it’s not. Our country is literally falling apart from our under-funded education systems, our crumbling infrastructure that is leaving cities with no drinking water, our over-funded police departments that require minimal education and training requirements, our underlying race issues that have apparently not gotten much better in the past 50 years…I could go on, but I’ve already upset enough of you that you’ll give me the old thumbs down, and you can return to your knuckle dragging, mouth breathing ways. Go Baker! Go Browns! Go any American that supports freedom of speech, educating that speech for everyone, good cops, good military, minimal religion in politics, etc, etc, etc.

  29. I think the bigger problem is for every 1 vet who says kneel it doesnt bother me, there are 10 who say it’s not right. So quit saying he got the military veterans backing. Did he only ask one person? How about kneel as a collective during an actual play in the game. Why does it have to be during the National Anthem? If you say it’s because it gets the most traction, then it is about the flag because the anthem and the flag goes hand in hand.

Chubb will be kneeling this year also.

  31. I’ll never understand fans who are more offended by players kneeling for racial equality than they are by team called the Redskins.

  32. It’s okay for you to believe what you believe… It’s not okay for you to demand others to believe the same way!

  33. Kap looked like an idiot when he kneeled. Don’t be an idiot. Find a better way to protest. When you disrespect the flag, intentional or not, you’re just distracting from the reason you’re protesting. People will respond better if you do it in a more appropriate way. How about stand, lock arms, and have signs? It’s pretty easy to protest properly & be heard, while still being respectful.

Too late. Mayfield already started losing fans. His job is next.

    ——

What are you gonna do when Mahomes kneels?

  35. Cleveland homicide rate up 55% from last year, I must have missed all of Baker’s tweets, interviews and concerns about this.

  36. he wore a “I can’t breathe” t-shirt to workout in, WOW, with no spine how could you anyone read what was on the shirt?

  37. I think he also lost fans after the Cheesecake Factory incident, but who’s keeping track?

  38. Mayfield is 100% right in that many of those triggered by the kneeling have absolutely no clue why the kneeling started in the first place. They never bothered to ask why or try to understand why players were protesting. They probably think the worldwide protests are just for Antifa and looters and not being against police brutality and racism.

  39. Baker Mayfield in 2021 after a lousy 2020: “No one iwll sign me because I kneeled!” While I am being a little facetious here when it comes to him, I expect to start seeing players at the end of their careers becoming SJWs and claiming their careers were ended because of it.

  40. I have two jerseys for sale if anyone is interested. Not interested in supporting someone who can’t keep their mouth shut. Even after they say they will.

if its not about flag or anthem then why kneel at anthem and flag flying.
    Zzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzz

Why play it at sporting events? Who made that rule?

  42. Let’s see a law which states that all American Flags will be made in the US and not in a communist country.

So who’s breaking your arm? What possible “demand” is being placed on you…….all men are created equal? Is that a stickler for you?

  45. If Mayfield gets wins, none of the flag worshippers will care about kneeling.

  46. Kneeling is last on the list of why you are losing fans young man. PLAY THE GAME. You are a marginal QB as of last season, but a champion when it comes to running your mouth.

  47. Fans are not an issue with you Baker, because the only fans you have are those who cheer for Cleveland and are loyal enough to cheer for whomever lines up under center for Cleveland.
