Alfred Williams claims Mike Gundy used racial slur in 1989

That OAN T-shirt is going to end up being the tipping point for plenty of problems for Oklahoma State coach Mike Gundy.

The incident, which prompted a non-apology from Gundy followed by an apology that looked and sounded more like a hostage video, dusted off a claim made by Alfred Williams and other Colorado Buffaloes in 1989.

Williams, a first-round pick of the Bengals in 1991 who spent nine seasons in the NFL and won a pair of Super Bowls with the Broncos, contends that Gundy, then the quarterback at Oklahoma State, directed a racial slur at Williams during a game between Oklahoma State and Colorado.

Williams and other Colorado players made the allegation at the time. An article on the situation appeared in the St. Louis Post-Dispatch.

Safety Tim James claimed that Gundy directed the slur to several Colorado players during the game, which Colorado won, 41-17; “I can’t count the number of times he used that word,” James said. “He has no class. There’s no place for that in sports.”

Said Williams at the time, “I hope not very many people raise their children to be like him. He said things he had no business saying to anybody.”

Williams, who currently appears on KOA radio in Denver, addressed the situation again today, after Shannon Sharpe mentioned it earlier in the day on FS1. And Williams confirmed that it happened on Wednesday’s show.

“I couldn’t believe it,” Williams said. “There’s no walking that back. This story’s been out there for 31 years.”

Williams added that it’s the only time that ever happened to him, in his life.

“I didn’t back down then,” Williams said, “I don’t back down now. . . . Every time I see him, I just want to run through him. Every time I see his face, every time I look at him, I want to run through him. . . . I’m 51 years old; why in the world do I need to lie about that?”

Gundy denied the allegations at the time they were made.

“It’s not true,” Gundy said, via the Post-Dispatch article. “They were doing the talking. Why would I say those things? I’ve been here four years, and half my friends [on the team] are black. It makes no sense.”

He may have to deny it again now, possibly with another hostage video.

  1. Did he also skip class in middle school? What did he do in elementary school? The mob smells blood and they won’t stop.

  2. I’ll never understand how some races can use words that other races cant…and I’ll get labeled a racist for this stance. Eliminate ALL slurs, even the ones that don’t pack a punch.

  3. Not condoning that word but he used a racial slur 31 years ago??
Well we better cancel his entire life then.

  4. I have a hard time believing that Gundy’s wearing of an OAN shirt was an accident. Admittedly, I had to look up what OAN was because I have never heard of it. Now knowing what it is, I don’t see how anyone could advertise something like it on a T-shirt and then claim it doesn’t align with their ideologies.

  5. Okay lets start the count down to him being fired. Let me start 10, 9 and you guys take it from here. Dude is toast. Watch.

  6. I’m not defending Gundy, as he doesn’t seem to have learned or evolved over the years.

But, seriously, 30 years ago? While I in college then, I said and did dumb crap all the time. Of course I regret it now, and I’ve learned; but, wow, if you were going to judge me now by what I had done 30 years ago, I’d be in deep trouble!

    The apology is never accepted.”

    What apology?

  8. Another thing, Gundy has every right to wear whatever T shirt he wants to wear & watch any news channel he wants & vote for whoever he wants to vote for.

  9. I wonder how Mr. Williams would feel if we dug into his life and investigated everything he’s said and done the past 31 years.

You’re 100% right. He does have that right. And just like Kaep had the right to kneel, the NCAA and his school doesn’t have to support his right to do so.

Right? That’s what you likely said about Kaep too at the time… can’t have it both ways.

  11. How many people said stupid or did stupid poorly thought out things in college ? Things they look back on now with sadness, confusion and a bit of relief ?

Sadness and confusion wondering how they ever got to that level of idiocy and callousness. Relief in the fact that they’ve grown for the better and left those mistakes in the past.

It doesn’t necessarily have to be something like Mike did..it could the way we treated a lover or friend. Maybe ideas we once swore by but thankfully have left behind.

Now imagine you’re judged by it twenty years later. We’ve all done things we regret and to go back to his time in college 23 years ago is unfair and ignorant.

It was wrong but at the same time people grow up and change. Mr Williams I’m sure you would regret someone pulling one of your skeletons from the past out and unless it’s a completely heinous crime it wouldn’t be fair.

  12. People make mistakes, especially people in college. However, Gundy seems to have had years to address his actions and those hurt by the actions, and it seems that he has failed to do so. Like most everybody else reading this, I don’t know for sure what Gundy said in 1989, but after learning about this OAN shirt (had no idea what OAN was pre-Gundy stories), I can’t give him the benefit of the doubt.

Why is is to hard for people to understand that the 1st amendment applies to people and their rights in terms of our Government. They do not apply to their workplace. But hey, why don’t you head into your job and stage protest and see how it works out for you

  14. Listen to Williams, he’s being honest here, he said it’s the only time it’s happened in his entire life.

  15. Been listening to Alfred here in Denver on his Drive Time readio show. Been listening for years. Never mentioned this before. Not that this is the flavor of the month, tell us all about it.

  16. I’m listening to Coach Pat Jones in Oklahoma on the Sports Animal radio show and he was the head coach at that time. What he has said about this is that Alfred and one of the other players should let everyone know what they said to Gundy during that game. The “N” word is very offensive but, I can also give you a few other word that are just as offensive to any person you say them to. I’m sure that the Gundy now would tell the 22 year old gundy back then to never say that word. I admit i use the word once in anger 43 years ago during a college game. I still regret in today. I believe Gundy does also.
