The NFL’s offensive rookie of the year had enough of an impact to land at No. 12 in the Chris Simms top 40 quarterback countdown.

Kyler Murray of the Cardinals earned that spot with a stellar first season that largely went unnoticed, primarily because the Cardinals were the also-ran in the best division in football, scrambling for relevance against the team that went to the Super Bowl in 2019, the team that went in 2018, and a team that has gone twice since 2012, with a winning record every year since then.

But Murray deserves a ton of credit, and he’ll be getting more of it as more people see what he can do. And he can do it all, from throwing to running to making off-schedule throws to ultimately winning games and chasing playoff spots.

Murray already is the second best quarterback in the division under the Simms analysis, with only Russell Wilson ahead of Murray. Before long, Murray could maybe challenge Wilson for supremacy in the NFC West.

  1. Given Murray’s current state of development, this rating seems too high. But the sky is the limit. As he gets more experience and pass protection, he has a chance to be really, really good.

  2. “a stellar first season that largely went unnoticed”
    __________

It went unnoticed because it wasn’t all that stellar. 20 TDs and 12 INTs and a QB rating in the 80s. Definitely a promising rookie year but he wasn’t exactly lighting the league on fire which is what “stellar” would normally mean.

  3. Kyler is definitely a better overall QB than Kirk Cousins so Simms has that part correct. This isn’t about stats. This is about the Top 40 QB’s overall in the NFL.

I don’t agree with Simms whole Top 40, but he got Kyler correct at #12. Cousins is too high at #13.

  4. Still trying to figure out how Murray won a single ROTW to Minshew’s 7 and took home the yearly award.

    [checks notes]

    Still got nothing.

  5. Dude, Gardner Minshew has a better rookie year! He was Rookie of the Week 7 times but not even on the ballot for Rookie of the Year. This list is crazy.

  6. As much I respect Kyler Murray, he has not shown enough to be ranked higher than both Tom Brady and Drew Brees. He may be the third best QB in the NFC West, behind Jimmy G. Jared Goff but better than Russell Overpaid Wilson.

…Losing 13 out of the past 17 against Wislon has obviously taken it’s toll.

  8. His ranking will be even higher as the year progresses… His skill set is second to none and people forget what a great “Chess” player he is. This refined mental aptitude will result in excellent on field decision making processes. (hence; thinking 5 moves ahead of everyone else) Check!

His POTENTIAL you could argue may be second to none, but currently, as it stands his skillset is second to many.

The dude has played one year. Give him time.

  10. If Carr, Cousins and Murray were all free agents guess who would be the 3rd QB signed.

No one in the league thinks Kyler Murray is better.

  11. I watched ev3ry one of his games and 12 is fair. He will be even better this year if they play. Add DHop to the mix. Wow!
