Doug Pederson: Opportunity to sign veteran RB slipped through our fingers

The Eagles have been linked with a few veteran running backs this offseason and it sounds like they were trying to sign one of them before that back opted for another option.

Eagles head coach Doug Pederson didn’t identify the player that the team was targeting during an appearance on WIP, but did say they’re no longer available.

“We had the opportunity to possibly grab a player and he slipped through our fingers,” Pederson said, via NJ.com.

Carlos Hyde signed with the Seahawks in May and there was word of Eagles interest, so it’s a decent bet that he was the player that Pederson and company were targeting. Reports have indicated Devonta Freeman and LeSean McCoy are also on the radar, although nothing appears to be brewing with either player.

  1. The eagles are set. Everyone is sleeping on Boston Scott, he’s their best RB. Miles Sanders, Boston Scott, and the big bruiser rookie Michael Warren is all you need.

  2. Carlos Hyde was such a highly valued commodity he lasted a full two months on the free agent market, with the entire league having every possible opportunity to sign him, yet strangely no one did. Whatever. Go sign another RB to spell Sanders.

  3. Well if that isn’t a shot at Eagles GM Howie Roseman i dont know what is.

Trouble in the city of brotherly love?

  4. Letting Howard go may been a mistake. I know he was a little banged up last year, but when healthy you’ll miss his downhill style wearing down the defense in the 4th qtr.

Eagles are cap strapped and couldn’t afford to re-sign Howard. He got a bundle from Miami – a sum the Eagles were in no position to match.

The Eagles still have $24 Million in cap space for this year. They are over the cap in 2021, but they could have brought him back on a one year deal.

What everyone is forgetting is that it takes 2 for a deal to get completed. Whose to say Howard wanted to come back. He was in the system, and seen our other backs. He knew we had a lot of talent and he wouldnt be an every down back, so his role would diminish with us. He probably wanted money and a major role in the offense which we couldnt offer the offensive role he wanted.
