Bills confident in backup quarterback Matt Barkley

The Bills drafted Jake Fromm as a developmental project, but if anything were to happen to starting quarterback Josh Allen in the near term, they’d be in the hands of career backup Matt Barkley.

And coach Sean McDermott is apparently fine with that.

“Very confident; I’m very confident in Matt for a lot of reasons,” McDermott said, via Sal Maiorana of the Rochester Democrat and Chronicle.

He wasn’t specific about those reasons, however, and there’s a reasonable case to be made that there aren’t many. Barkley has been unspectacular for the course of his career. He won a start for the Bills in 2018, but threw three interceptions and no touchdowns in a couple of appearances last year. A late pick ended a chance to come back against the Patriots, and he threw two interceptions when mopping up in the finale against the Jets.

Between that lack of resume, and the only other options being Fromm and Davis Webb, the Bills have what could be perceived as a pretty glaring weak spot.

“Competition is good to have,” McDermott said. “A competition at that position and competition across our roster. And I think Brandon [Beane, the Bills General Manager] and his staff have done a good job of providing that. So, we’ll just see how it plays out.”

Of course, there are quarterbacks available who would be immediate upgrades, but so far the Bills haven’t made any moves in the direction of Cam Newton (who the Bills staff knows well) or Colin Kaepernick or any other outside options. There might come a time when the Bills feel more urgency, but in the middle of June, the Bills are apparently content with the guy already there.

  1. Would love to see them pick up someone a little better than Barkley. I don’t know if Cam is the answer- but with the style Allen plays, he is likely to miss a few games here and there.
Barkley is at best a game manager – cant see them winning too many games if he is in there.

  2. I think the Bill’s are actually loaded with underrated backups. Barkley is solid. He would have been the overall #1 pick had he come out after his junior year. Davis Webb is good. Jake Fromm should be an ok backup. Everyone in the room has super intangibles, so they have a very strong group. The Bill’s are ready to contend right now. Josh Allen is a top 5 QB and still growing. There’s no limit on what he’s capable of winning. I believe Barkley can win big too, if called upon.

  3. That is one ugly QB stable the Bills have, one has no accuracy, especially on deep balls, another has no arm and the last one has no talent.

No QB, no cap room and no hope.

    The Buffalo Bills.

  4. what is the cost of cam newton or kaepernick? will either of them come in as a backup? it isnt unrealistic to believe either of them could beat allen out for the job, but if they dont then youve got that “put the backup conversation” going all year.

The Bills will not bring in a quarterback like Cam Newton because he would win the starting job.

    …. Josh Allen is a top 5 QB …

I will have whatever you are smoking. LMFAO!!!!!!!

Josh Allen is a bottom tier QB and near last place on throws over 20 yards – which was kinda the reason the Bills reached on his mediocre self. His YUGE arm was going to make him the “king of the deep throw”. But in 2 years his best quality is that he is big and tough to tackle (when he’s not fumbling). Kinda of like a slower and fumblier really, really, really, really, really poor man’s Cam Newton (except Cam threw for over 400 yards his first NFL game, and Josh has never done that in his College or NFL career).

Josh Allen averages less than 175 yards/game passing and is being carried by a very good defense. If he doesn’t pull up his socks this year – he is just another Mitch Trubisky.

The division is wide open for the taking for the first time this century and he has the best team around him since the Bills SuperBowl years. Ball is in his court – he needs to improve

And he is definitely NOT a top 5 QB, unless your talking top 5 from the bottom.

Well Cam isn’t going to come in for backup money that is for sure and who knows what Kap’s contract demands would be at this point.

  9. The only thing that matters for the Bills this season and into the near future is what
Kim Pegula will do to really derail the franchise like she has done to the Sabres.

  10. Cam’s in a peculiar position: he’s not ready to be labeled a backup, but teams are not going to commit significant money until he can show he is healthy. I doubt his body will let him return to being a dual threat QB. And Kap’s ship has sailed. It wouldn’t surprise me at all if Fromm beats out Barkley.
