John Lynch thinks 49ers can be even better

Until the final 15 minutes of last season, no one was better than the 49ers.

And even with an offseason of change, General Manager John Lynch believes they can close that gap.

Via Brian Witt of NBCSportsBayArea.com, Lynch said at the team’s State of the Franchise event that they’re in position to improve on last year’s result.

“I think it’s a state of a team that I think is very well-equipped to compete for championships,” Lynch said. “Now, it’s incumbent upon us to find a way to be better than we were last year, which was pretty darn good.

“We talk about it a lot, Kyle and I. It’s a philosophy that we kind of bonded on when we first started having conversations. It’s something Jon Gruden used to talk about. You never stay the same. You’re either getting better or you’re getting worse.”

The 49ers had to replace some big names, but have found a number of like-for-life alternatives. As much as the retirement of left tackle Joe Staley was a blow, trading for Trent Williams softens it. Likewise, dealing defensive tackle DeForest Buckner to the Colts brought back a first-round pick that turned into Javon Kinlaw. Wide receiver Emmanuel Sanders left in free agency, but promising Brandon Aiyuk arrived in the draft.

“I’m very encouraged with where our franchise is,” Lynch said. “Our goal was to give ourselves a chance to be a better football team this year. I think we’ve done that. I think we have a chance to be a better football team, and that’s tough when you talk about some of the losses that we’ve had.

“I’m very encouraged, and now we’ve just got to go do it. That’s the great thing about this game. You can talk about it all you want, but you’ve got to walk the walk, and we’re looking forward to having the opportunity to do that.”

It took a fourth-quarter comeback from the Chiefs to keep them from winning the Super Bowl last year, and they feel they’re at least in position to be back at that level.

  1. Lynch and Shanahan make a perfect team, they are both arrogant to the nines, and are both delusional when they speak about their team, they both make the Niners out to be the greatest assembly of players & coaches that walked the face of the earth, which they obviously are not especially with Jimmmy G as their q.b. who is the most overrated player in the league by far.

  2. Que the “not with that quarterback” comments. As if your teams QB never missed a throw lol. It’s almost as if people forget jimmy got us the lead, the defense lost it, but instead of blaming the defense they blame jimmy for not getting it back lolol

  3. Bang bang!!!! People are haters bro. They don’t want the 49ers to be good. Nobody does after they dominated two decades of football. They’re scured. Lol

  4. 49rs are a great team and they will be great again this year. Now they must sign their TE and other star players. The addition by subtraction will begin and soon the greatness will fade. Ask the Rams.

I hope you are not including the 90’s when you say “they dominated two decades of football”
I will give you the 80’s but the 90’s belonged to the Cowboys.

  6. 49ers are back atop their rightful spot in the NFC. Jimmy G isn’t good???? Lol ok. He only passed the eye test, had a great record and was top a 10 QB in advanced and adjusted metrics. I don’t know how you can see he’s not really good. Why? One bad quarter of football doesn’t define a player. Maybe people are blinded by his good looks. 1st year starting all 16 and he was really good. He won games for his team. Getting 6 this year. Two things you can do about it. Nothing and learn to love it.

    Winning percentage 2000-2018:
    #1 Patriots .785
    #21 49ers .469

    Doesn’t include playoff records.

  8. I don’t get the haters. The 49ers went to the Superbowl, last year, which is better 30 other NFL teams did. Garappolo took them to the Super Bowl in his first full year, after coming off a torn ACL.

They kept most of their players and brought in some great ones at WR, OL, and DL.

They have a great chance to succeed, if they play this year.

  9. Winning percentage 2000-2018:
    #1 Patriots .785
    #21 49ers .469

Keep living in the past. In the most recent year, 2019, the Patriots limped into the playoffs and lost in the Wildcard round. The 49ers, otoh, went to the Super Bowl.

Now the Patriots don’t have Brady. There will be a lot of living in the past for Patriot fans.

  10. That QB is good enough as long as the defense stays strong and they have a healthy offensive line and run game. They don’t need the QB to carry the team like their division opponent Seahawks.

  11. Seahawks – Great QB, suspect OL and pass rush.
Rams – Great HC but I never trust anyone named Les.
Cards – Goimg to be better than you think. Awesome young QB and going to be a really good offense. Defense is undisciplined.
49ers – Good everything and solid depth.

Point – 49ers win the West and advance to a second straight SB this time coming out with a win. Assuming fortunate health.
