Kenny Stills unimpressed with Stephen Ross donation

Last year, then-Dolphins wide receiver Kenny Stills criticized Dolphins owner Stephen Ross for supporting President Trump’s re-election campaign while claiming to support racial justice initiatives. Three weeks after that criticism Stills was traded to the Texans, but Stills has more to say about Ross’s political activities.

Responding to the news that Ross has pledged $13 million to the Ross Initiative in Sports for Equality, Stills noted that giving money to his own foundation, which reduces his own tax burden, isn’t exactly a huge sacrifice.

“Donation to his non profit = Tax write off,” Stills wrote on Twitter.

Ross has said he supports Trump on some issues and disagrees with him on others, but he has never really detailed how he can square his support for Trump with his claimed support for racial equality. Stills, for one, is skeptical of Ross’s motives.

  1. If there is no downside to a tax write off, Stills should be willing to make a huge donation. The reality is the write off only covers his tax rate. You have to wonder what the expectation is here. I think this is one of if not the largest donations made by any nfl owner. Most I have seen are in the 1M range.

  2. Leave it to another athlete to be offended by a good deed. Hey I agree with Trump on some issues, but disagree on others, but I’m NOT offended by the disagreements.

  3. Good Kenny then I would call for immediate end to this charade of donating millions by owners and players. Didn’t know there was a now a multi point criteria that has to be approved in order to be “woke”. Enough jumping through hoops people. Now it’s just about how much the envelope can be pushed and not about helping those that need it.

  4. I agree with Stills. Ross is one the league’s slimebucket owners. Woody Johnson, slimy Bisciotti, Kroenke, Jerry Jones, Irsay, Snyder, etc. Spanos, too.

  5. So Kenny Stills is gonna show us all how it’s done. And he’s gonna match that donation. Big of him. Oh wait…

  6. Kenny Stills has always been the mouse that roared. Just be quite and be blessed with the donation for the cause.

  7. Well, I agree with Stills. If you support the guy by saying you agree with Trump on some issues, that’s one thing. But,if you donate to his efforts, then you are why he exists. You make him possible.

You cannot buy yourself out that. Ross must declare one way or the other. You CANNOT support Trump and the move against injustice and inequality.

  8. The continued arrogance of these players as they give nothing but lip service. A man has donated millions and some employee is unhappy

  9. Most GMs in the league are unimpressed with his ability to catch a football and to stay on the field, yet he collected millions standing on the sideline being completely unproductive.
we can only assume he donated all those funds to a charity that is OK with everyone else.
pro athletes sure arent acting very intelligent lately

  10. Precisely what kcflake said, who cares what Kenny stills say, also isn’t a tax write off the same regardless of who you give it to. Lol

  11. Donations to your own foundations are not good deeds. The vast majority of that money is spent on administration…meaning on salaries, travel, and amenities for those that administer the funds…who are usually family and friends of person whose foundation it is.

Calling something a charity doesn’t make it so. Most of these foundations spend < 10% of the money they receive on the alleged mission of the foundation. The true mission of these foundations is to be a tax write off.

If Ross was sincere there would be action instead of donations to himself.

  12. Charity Navigator rates the Ross Initiative in Sports for Equality as a private company. They don’t disclose their finances so I doubt it counts as a tax write off.

I feel the media should always mention an athletes charity’s score when bringing them up because some of the worst charities are from athletes.

  13. You mean the owner of the only team in the NFL with an African American GM AND Coach?

  14. Stills should donate an equal percentage of his salary yet not report it on his taxes…it won’t happen and he will be a close minded hypocrite

  15. Ross donates generously and gets criticized for it. You can’t make this stuff up.

  16. They call for action, they get action, then they talk smack about said action. What a clown.

And he should really do a little research into how tax write-offs actually work.

And I’m not sure that Ross really supports Trump so much as he supports the republican party, and Trump is the only option.

  17. I wish Kenny would have focused on not dropping key passes in big games the way he does Mr Ross’s donations!

  18. Criticizing a goodwill gesture and doing nothing of substance – that’s what the kneelers do.

    How much has stills donated?
    ——————–

Maybe we don’t know because like most people of goodwill you give without issuing a press release or expecting a pat on the back.

  20. Perhaps Kenny should quit the NFL in protest. Until he donates the same level of money most of the NFL owners do, he is a hypocrite on the same level of a certain elected office and really should keep his mouth shut about what others are doing and talk about all the things he is doing for all of the ethnic groups. But no, just like others and why this country is failing he is trying to force his opinions, that must be absolutely right, onto others which only make them hate more.

  21. Another nfl player who is at the end of his career trying to seem relevant.

I’d like to see the owner pull the donation and say “Kenny Stills said my money wasn’t good enough”. Maybe donate it to whatever college Stills attended. Clearly his education is working against him.

    ——————-

    Of course you can.

  23. Hey Kenny how about putting some of your money where your mouth is?! Including the 20 season you will have made $35 million, how much have you donated?!

  24. “Which will take considerable steam out of the attacks that will be made on NFL players, coaches, etc. for kneeling.”

    ——–

Thank you for putting this article in the proper perspective….well said, indeed.

  25. Great Job Mr Ross.
This Blowhard doesn’t speak for reasonable people.
No matter how hard he tries to torpedo your good deed.
I wonder what the beneficiaries of Mr Ross’ donation think about Kenny Steals’ comments. Trying to take money out of the pockets of the people it was intended for.

A millionaire athlete trying to taint a generous donation to those that need it. Some special kind of person you are

  26. Stills is a crybaby.. when you donate 13 million of your own money then you can say something.
    Until then just play football.
This guy is still sour that Miami got rid of him. Grow up Stills, 13 million is alot of money to give away. Much more then what you have given away!!

  27. I was totally unimpressed with Stills when he was a Dolphin, and how much has he donated to a cause?

  28. These players are so used to being givin everything that 13 million is chump change

  29. “Isn’t exactly a huge sacrifice?” I don’t care if you’re Jeff Bezos—13 million dollars is still 13 million dollars, no matter how many ways you slice it. However, I’m much more interested to know what exactly *would* impress Mr. Stills.

  30. Kenny Stills had issues with Mr. Ross supporting President Trump, a longtime NYC friend and vented those issues on social media instead of arranging a meeting to discuss his feelings directly to him. Stills is very passionate about social issues and while he was a Dolphin, Mr. Ross supported Stills’ charities and supported his desire to protest by kneeling. Stills is a coward for publicly criticizing the man who signed his checks and supported him. Now he’s acting like a disgruntled employee by discrediting what Mr. Ross has done with his donation. People need to “agree to disagree”. Act like a man, Kenny, instead of a spoiled child. People will respect you more.

  31. Sure, let’s all worry about what a journeyman wide receiver has to say in regards to the employer that traded him. Put your money where your mouth is, Kenny.

  32. Supports Trump on some issues, doesn’t on others?

And that’s troublesome? The thoughts of the vast majority of people in the country are troublesome huh?

  33. Kenny Stills grew up in Carlsbad, California and attended La Costa Canyon High School. The median income in Carlsbad is over $102,000. The median property value is close to $800,000. Has Kenny Stills always been privileged???

  34. I don’t have any problem with Kenny Stills. I think what he’s saying is if Pinocchio is making promises while his nose is growing longer, he’s not impressed. A lot of people feel good when they’re being played for a fool. Why do you think fools get played so easily? They like it. Why do some people join cults when everyone else can see that the cult leader is nuts? Hey, there’s a lot more people out there than you’d think being led around by a ring in their nose.

  35. People on this thread are why an abomination like Trump got elected. Ross is worth over 7 bil. It’s like most of you giving pocket change. Plus, he gets the write off and PR. Now, because Stills speaks his mind, as he has the right to do Constitutionally, it’s all about how much he gave or how many passes he dropped or how washed up he is. SMH.

  36. Amazing how before Trump ran as a Republican, everybody loved him. Suddenly he became a racist when he became a Republican…
Do some research, idiots, and show us all where Trump has ever been racist. To the contrary. He hired more people of color and women for years, when everybody else didn’t.
    But keep listening….

  37. I wonder if he is impressed with the Covid-19 still out of control because others are unimpressed with what others think and what they are telling them for their own safety.

Robert Kraft donated a lot less. What does that make him?

You also left out the guy who frequents underage massage parlours.

  40. Someone actually posted ‘Show me an example of Trump being a racist’. I think he was serious.

  41. Kenny realizes that system racism is what has allowed Mr. Ross to have 13 million to donate towards ending systemic racism…that’s why he is uninpressed…

  42. Don’t any of you realize that Trump is absolutely ruining this country? Where’s your patriotism?

  43. I’m unimpressed with Kenny Stills hands in the NFL. His political attacks are unprofessional and just as marginal as he is as a player.
