Patriots sign Cam Newton

If you can’t beat him, sign him.

The Patriots have agreed to terms with quarterback Cam Newton, PFT has confirmed. The story was first reported by ESPN.

Newton has a 2-0 record against the Patriots during his time with the Panthers. The first overall pick in the 2011 draft.

It’s a low salary, one-year deal with plenty of incentives. And it gives Newton a chance to supplant another former Auburn quarterback who had been atop the depth chart in New England following Tom Brady‘s departure for Tampa Bay: Jarrett Stidham.

As one source with knowledge of the situation explained it to PFT, the opportunity to play for coach Bill Belichick in the New England system and to re-energize his image were major factors in the decision. The move also gives Newton all of training camp to earn the starting job over Stidham and, in theory, Brian Hoyer.

The Patriots view it as a low-risk deal, and they’ve accepted all risks regarding Newton’s health because he’s dying to prove himself. He’ll apparently get that chance in New England.

  1. This was my prediction all along.

Even as a diehard Panthers fan, I quit hating the Pats a long time ago. They didn’t put that kickoff out of bounds.

  2. It will be fun to see how Cam gets along with BB. The over under for a ‘incident’ is 7 games.

  3. Belicheck is going to love the towel over the head by Cam when things are going bad. He’s the anti-Brady.

  4. But now we’ll never prove that Stidham is going to be the next GOAT and that Belichick was playing 3 dimensional chess or whatever it is that Pats fans kept telling us….

  5. Its a good signing. I think Newton is one of the better QBs of his generation when healthy. He doesnt get credit for that.

  6. Good signing by the Pats and in a perfect world he will never see the field unless its mop-up duty

  7. Wow. Can’t wait to see what all the pats fans post after they were trashing him and were saying no way BB signs him. LOL

  8. If Newton’s healthy and can stay that way, the Pats are once again a force to be reckoned with. When healthy, he’s easily the best QB in the AFC East. Wow!

Well, doesn’t that just put a fly into the ointment?

Did anyone think he could be picked up off the discount table? He is almost automatically a third round compensatory pick in 2022. Never underestimate those picks.

  10. “Reeks of desperation”

how in the world do you come to that conclusion, they wwaited for months and they are paying him peanuts

    hardly seems desperate to me

don’t like the move for the Pats, but your comment is just whack

  11. I think its Hoyer who this puts on the bubble. But also Pats need to see which Cam Newton they are getting.

Either way It was funny hearing Kaep getting pushed like some qb teams should be jumping at when Newton was still out there. Sorry folks but its not even close.

Oh, and if Hoyer does become an FA then sorry again folks because Hoyer > Kaep too.

  12. Pats cough up a 3rd round pick in 2021 for taping the Bengals so this basically makes it a trade. Dunno how I feel about this or what it means for Stid but I guess we’ll see.

  13. Wow, I never thought in all my life I’d ever utter these words—–Cam Newton made a good decision. If he acts like an adult, just plays football and keeps the post game theatrics to a minimum he might actually rehabilitate his image.
He routinely embarrasses himself when he’s in front of a mic so this is great for him too. Belichick won’t allow him to talk so less fodder for the guys that drill him for not knowing the English language.

The SAME thing Panther fans would do if the signed Tom Brady
    After they always trashed him.

IF he’s healthy and that’s a big IF, he’s the best QB in the AFC East.

  15. Belichick has a plan. He’s motivated to prove he can win without Brady and Cam has been there before. What’s not to like? Stidham isn’t quite ready yet

  16. “Bill Belichick believes in Jarrett Stidham. Soon enough, we will, too.“

  17. Belichick gonna turn him into a HOFer, lmao at Bills fans who thought it would be their time

  18. Great move by Belichick. Short money and creates competition. I think Stidham will be starting the opener…whenever that is

  19. My friends who are Pats fans are losing it right now. To be fair,. Cam is better than what Belichick has on the roster, so a 1 year prove-it contract is worth it.

  20. This is a great signing by New England for these reasons…1) Brian Hoyer is pathetic as a football player and shouldn’t be a 2nd or 1st string guy…2) as good as Stidham could be, i think a year backing Cam up will help him more and 3) Cam CAN follow the Patriot way. Don’t forget when Jerry Richardson owned Carolina, Jerry wanted Cam to be a clean cut type of quarterback. It was when Jerry left that he grew his hair out. Cam Newton as a quarterback has all the talent in the world to mask the line issues they have and before the injury he was playing good football for Carolina and using McCaffrey and in New England, he’ll use White well. Good signing, low risk/high reward

I think half the posters in here would be the best qb in the afc east.

  22. An all-star Sunday publicity coup by the Patriots through a stagnant free agent signing announcement that also serves to water down the sideline filming league admonishment that was also handed down at approximately the same time.

Throw in a little player roundtable on current social events. #amazing_coincidence

This just isn’t true. You’re just making stuff up.

  24. Can we not give Belichick a pass if Cam is healthy and he can’t win with him? Should finally help the Brady haters realize that there is no magic system that made Brady so dominant over the past two decades. Bill was on the verge of getting fired with another former #1 overall pick and Pro Bowl QB who had made it to the Super Bowl without Bill in New England (Bledsoe). Maybe this is his plan. Star Newton, watch him inevitably get hurt. Put in Stidham and hope he catches lightning in a bottle twice?

  25. Just a distraction from the million dollar fine and lost pick for most recent spygate.

  26. The real question is what does Tampa Bay Tommy think about this? You know he’ll post something to his Instagram in between plugging his $150 TB12 elastic bands.

  27. I never understood the hate for Cam.

The biggest concern with him is availability, which is still a concern.

But he plays the game like a lot of people on PFT claim they like…tough. In fact, if he shied away from contact more, he’d probably wouldn’t have been hurt so often.

I mean, he’s flamboyant, but so what? He’s not a head case like an Antonio Brown. Yes, he has an ego, but what NFL QB doesn’t?

And please, don’t give me the superbowl fumble issue. He made a big blunder by not jumping on the ball, but by know means was he scared to do it. As I mentioned, he’s never been scared of contact.

  28. Great move by Pats. Another BB reclamation project. Most of them work out. The only ones that didn’t were AB and Chad Johnson.

    Cam > Kaepernick. Good signing

    ———

Yeah kind of like signing a benign or malignant tumor. You really don’t want either one in your body. Just one isn’t always lethal….

  30. When he’s healthy,Newton is a beast. If there is football this year, things just got interesting in New England again.

  31. Bill and Cam are already on the same page as far as post-game pressers. Might be kindred spirits.

  32. Did not see this coming. Then again, I have not seen a lot of things coming with the Patriots over the last two decades. When has BB been predictable?

  33. This is a genius lottery ticket move by the Pats/BB. I read elsewhere he’s getting paid $7.5 million plus incentives. That’s just a bit more than Case Keenum or Tyrod Taylor make per year. If he’s still hurt or can’t play, they cut him and lose close to nothing. If he’s healthy, at 31 he could be back to a top 10 talent with years ahead of him and the Pats could either sign him to a long term deal or franchise him for another year or two. Sure he probably can’t run over people in short yardage for TD’s anymore, but he’s got more than enough talent without that to roll the dice for this low price. No downside, all upside.

  34. Bill will trade him to a team before the deadline for draft picks. Wake up people they just lost a draft pick they need to rebuild this team. Bill is one slick dude.

  35. Just when I thought the fashion choices out of NE locker room couldn’t get any worse with the BB hoodies, Brady UGGs, and horrible WR neck beards. Enjoy Cam in his post game press conference glory Pats fans. You deserve each other, hahahahahaha!!!

  36. As a diehard Patriots fan, I don’t like this. Not a Cam Newton fan.

But thank God it’s not Kaepernick. At least we have that.

  37. So how much do the Patriots owe him if he’s cut in training camp?

Not sure how much he’s guaranteed but certainly it will play a factor in whether he makes the 53-man roster

  38. Billy Boy still playing Chess while everyone else is playing Checkers
1st I Love the PATS ,TB12 and Alabama Football RTR
2nd I dont let any of these cloud my judgement of the other.
Fact I will be rooting heavily for an Auburn QB to have a great season.
I have Completely discounted Cam playing for the Pats only because I felt no way we can fit him into our Cap.(I FELT HE WOULD HOLD OUT UNTIL SOMEONE GETS INJURED IN CAMP AND SIGN. I was wrong. If he has a great season and we dont resign him. billy will get that 3rd rd pick we lost 15 mins ago. ROFL

  39. chess not checkers…stidham was never starting im not a cam fan but a lot of you guys in here are insane, BB is gonna make him a winner

  40. Congrats Cam,

Best of luck to you. I wish you success with the Pats, even though I really don’t like them. Get healthy and show them all what’s still in the tank.

  41. fascinating
this is year is like a Madden franchise season when you and your brother intentionally messed up all the rosters

  42. The last couple of games I seen of Cam Newton, he played horrible. Maybe Bill belichick can reinvigorate him and make him care about the game again.

  43. Patriots fans acting happy about this LOL. Cam is a whiny poor sport and the moment things don’t go his way he’ll quit and him and Belichick will clash. And let’s be real, Cam isn’t beating Mahomes or Jackson in anything meaningful. Thanks, Bill!

Cam was cheaper than Kap. You get what you pay for.
    ________________
Are you suggesting Kap is better than Newton? LOL It just keeps better and better.

  45. Sorry Commish … but you have Johnson, AB, Gordon, Wayne, Cooks, Lloyd, Jackson, Stallworth, Hernandez and Crumpler not work out …

  46. Wasn’t expecting this….I figured they were gonna see what they had in Stidham. Must be a super low one year deal considering they have under $1M in cap space. This makes the upcoming season very, very interesting…. I expect Newton to work his butt off since he’s playing for next year’s contract.

  47. As a Pats fan I have to admit this puzzles me, unless it’s to give Stidham an extra year of learning if he isn’t ready to start out of camp.

  48. Good signing by the Pats, Cam isn’t going to be acting out in NE. He is worth a flyer but I have to say I wouldn’t want Cam on my team.

Stealing laptops in college. Fumbles in the Super Bowl and doesn’t try to recover it. He is 6’5″
    250 pounds that is why.

  50. But I thought the they were going keep winning with Stidham. Stidham and a bit of cheating. He did after all some some kind of preseason “record”.

  51. If I had to go from Russell Wilson to Cam Newton I think I might have to quit watching football.

Now imagine Tom Brady to Cam Newton…yikes…see all these people that are happy about the signing haven’t actually watched him play as a patriot yet.

    Here’s hoping they do!

  52. Cream rises to the top ! More competition for stidham! And worse case newton can get the Pat’s the pick back they lost on this bogus taping of the bangles.

    ————————————————

I readily admit that BB is the Greatest Head Coach of All-Time, as well as the Greatest NFL GM of All-Time, but Albert Haynesworth and Josh Gordon are two other reclamation projects that hit bumps in the road.

Fortunately Newton will cost the Pats next to nothing if he does not work out, and there is obviously potential upside.

  54. Hate this signing. Cam is all about Cam, unless he has had a miraculous personality turnaround, and I don’t think he did. Mr. Me not jumping on his own fumble in the SB really cemented it for me. Please, Stidham, win the job.

  55. Can’t wait to hear from Patises fans how great Newton is and waht a brilliant move this is by Bellichick.

In reality, it reeks of desperation. When you look at your roster and then at the Jets roster and realize they have a very good chance to beat your butt twice next season, desperation sets in. Newton is desperation at its best.

  56. So much for Stidham. Funny how all the BB boys (hello t6) said he’s the man now and pointed out his 3 masterful passes in preseason. Now he’s the senior ball boy again.

League minimum. No reason not to give him a shot.

  58. A veteran QB loaded with physical talent who has had some success in the league for about one-third the rate of an average starting QB.

  59. Physically he can probably still play, but it has been his decision making that is suspect, starting with his Super Bowl performance.

  60. I did not see this coming because I did not think there was any way the Pats could afford him.

But at a cheap incentive laden deal it’s a no brainer.

  61. It’s going to go either two ways:

-Cam will realize that BB knows how to handle the media, while also giving him a distraction free place to focus on being a QB and utilize this opportunity to get his career on track (and may even walk away with a ring out of the deal if all the chips fall into place).

-Cam will just think it’s a temporary place to get a years pay and move on and take nothing from it, thus wasting another year in a career with nothing to show for it.

Here’s hoping the first option is what plays out

Overrated and beat up. Good luck with that inaccurate, interception prone player.

2 years ago started 14 games completed almost 70% of his passes.
And was doing well under N Turner. TD to int ratio 3/1

  63. I didnt think they’d sign him, thought they were all in on Stidham for this year to see what they had. Anyway, if Cam is healthy he can be effective.

Problem is he hasnt been healthy much since 2017
    Shoulder surgery in March 2017
    Shoulder surgery in January 2019
    Foot surgery in December 2019

He had a pretty good year in 2018, before he got hurt again. 67% completion, 24 tds, 13 picks (4 in one game), QB Rating over 100 in 8 of 14 games.

Torn rotator cuffs, lisfranc injury to the foot…..not the things you want when your game is mobility and a big arm.

Hes not been a problem off the field, except for the dumb outfits. The max this contract costs the Pats is 7.5 million, thats if he hit all the incentives.

Low risk signing by the Pats money wise, but does it hurt Stidham if ultimately hes going to be your guy?

I guess we wait and see what happens.

  64. What Patriots fans said about the Ravens prior to Brady leaving and signing Cam:

I’m sorry but you are cherry-picking the best stat from his best years to paint a picture that isn’t accurate.

He’s had one season with a 3:1 TD :INT ratio. Career he’s worse than 2:1 which is poor.
He’s had one season completing over 65%. Career he’s under 60%

He’s wildly overrated because of his athleticism but he’s an average QB at best. He’s not accurate and throws a lot of picks. I don’t see him being real successful in NE.

No.. I’m s said his last season under N Turner he played well
That’s not cherry picking it was specific to a season.

For that season his completion % was 67.9 %
His foist 8 games before the injury he had 14 Td and 4 int. And finished
The season with a QB rat of 94 the second best of his career
And he was a passer first not a runner.

So it shows he can “take to coaching “
If he doesn’t do that in NE they will cut him.

  68. The foot injury is the biggest deal for Cam. Given a mid range LT he’s MVP material, but if he can’t plant or pivot on his foot it won’t matter who he plays with. Cam is going to Cam; how that plays with Bill is yet to be seen, but maybe it will be good for both of them.

I really just hope Cam gets another shot at the SB, even if it’s in a Pat’s uniform. He was a great player for us in Carolina country.

  69. Looks to me like BB is gonna try and run the ball and win on defense. Other than the bills i dont see any competition so it might juat work. Im still picking the Bills to win the division, but if newton can stay healthy and the defense is good, the pats can make the playoffs.

He had 1 MVP year and he hasn’t gotten anywhere close to that level before or since. Rich Gannon and Steve McNair also have MVP’s and neither is a great QB. They both had one amazing year and then went back to their average. Cam did the same.
