Josh Allen speaks of close friendship with Sam Darnold

Sam Darnold and Josh Allen were both Top 10 picks in the 2018 NFL draft, and although they both landed in the AFC East with Darnold as the starting quarterback of the Jets and Allen as the starting quarterback of the Bills, they consider themselves friends more than rivals.

Allen said on SiriusXM NFL Radio that he and Darnold began training together before they were drafted and have become close.

“We’ve been able to rely on each other,” Allen said, via Syracuse.com. “Just kind of lean on each other I guess and just throughout the year. Texting each other and just making sure like we’re both doing OK, and we’re both adjusting well to it. So we’ve kind of had similar situations and it’s fun to have somebody like that that’s kind of going through the same things.”

Allen called Darnold “one of the greatest dudes” he’s ever met and that they make each other better.

“[I’ve taken] some things from his mechanics and tried to apply them to my game and vice versa,” Allen said. “Just kind of picking each other’s brains as far as defenses and types of concepts that we’re running. We don’t get too deep. So I don’t know if my coaches [are listening]. But we don’t get too deep, but it’s fun to kind of talk to somebody who’s kind of going through the same thing.”

Allen and Darnold will likely be competing against each other twice a season for years to come. A rivalry, but a friendly one.

  1. josh allen is fun to watch but im telling yall so was blake bortles and he played exactly like allen does

  2. Washington Redskins backup quarterback Kyle Allen was also down there, working alongside Josh and Darnold. Ironically enough, strictly from a talent standpoint, Kyle is the most gifted of the three. Kyle’s path to a starting position is blocked with Dwayne Haskins in front of him. But you gotta love his work ethic and at some point a team will offer a king ransom to pry him away from the Redskins and Kyle will be ready when he gets his chance.

  3. Allen got a year jump on Darnold by way of how the Bills are building.
Should be fun watching this ‘rivalry’ progress.

Had to get that in b4 the sewage truck from toronto shows up.,.

  4. Neither of them are top 20 QB’s or going to be worthy of a 20+ million dollar contract. Kelly/Marino this isn’t.

  5. @touchback6

Quick to ignore the taping of the Bengals sidelines are we?!?!?

Let me guess??? It’s just the league and it’s owners out to get you guys?!?!

    😂 😂 😂 😂

  6. LOL, The Dolphins couldn’t be happier with the current state of the AFCE.

Whoever said Kelly/Marino 2.0……..never saw Marino or Kelly play.

Irrelevant as they will all be looking up at Tua soon.

  7. I love stories like this! Anyone who’s been on a team above pee-wee level or/and in the military understands what they’re talking about and camaraderie like this means!

    ???????????????????????????????????????

64 years old and season ticket holder through the Kelly era. 2.0 meaning what it could become

  9. Firebaugh! Firebaugh and San Clemente unite! (Hey, at least I didn’t write Dos Palos!)

It won’t become that. Neither possess the talent and both will always be battling for 2nd place in that division. Buffalo could win the division this year, after that it’s a matter of praying Tua gets hurt.

  11. Throwing Cam into that division really spiced things up sure. Allen, Darnold, Newton/Stidham and now Tua; for the first time in two decades it’s completely up for grabs!

  12. I really like Josh Allen. He hasnt put together yet but hes right there. He has no excuses this year. If they get even decent oline play that offense should be good..

As far Darnold goes, i think its hard to judge him. The jets offense has been such a mess.if they can get him some legit quality weapons to go a long with bell he can be good as well.

Its funny i look at both these guys i think both are better than Prescott. If either of these qbs had the cast prescott has both would be looking at monster paydays. Just goes to show, sometimes its better to go to the right team than it is to go in the top 10.

  13. A rigged professional game they play, it’s easy to understand their relationship. Don’t hate me, just keeping it real.

  14. It’s funny that Wentz and Dak have a friendly rivalry too, but you’d never know it by how the fans feel about their respective QB’s. #gobirds

  15. Watching Trash Allen implode last year in the playoffs was comedy gold, it was hilarious.

    14 fumbles last year

20 tds in an easy offensive era and 23 turnovers

    yikes!
    _____________________________________________________
14 fumbles and 4 he recovered on his own. Besides, he does much more running than the average QB, therefore fumbles will happen. 109 rushes for 510 yards and 9 td’s on the ground… add that to his 20 passing td’s and that puts him at 29. 9 total interceptions, but just 2 interceptions thrown after week 5 which proves he’s getting better.

    Darnold had 19 td’s in two less starts and 13 int’s with 11 fumbles. 33 rushes for 62 yds and 2 td’s.

Allen is improving and that’s a good sign for Buffalo.

  17. Guys spouting about Tua. Saying you better hope he doesn’t get injured. HAAAAAA, he’s injured right now. He’s been injured every year in college. The NFL, all guys are bigger, stronger and faster.
He won’t have 1st and 2nd round picks blocking for him across the line.
He won’t have 3 first round WRers to throw to, like at Alabama.
He’s not getting taller, he’s fragile, he won’t last long.

  18. Allen and Darnold will lead this league in the future. The incredible Mahomes, Murry and the rest of the next gen will make this league so much fun…

  19. Great deal. Sportsmanship and friendship, positives…
Thanks for finding something good to type.

So, 20 tds and 19 ints. That’s horrible in an era made for offense. He’s not even 2:1!!!!

    Horrible.

  23. Looking forward to the new AFC East – where there are actual rivalries again, and the division title goes down to the last week.

It’s a strong conference top to bottom now. I see the Jets & Bills emerging from the pack in the coming years and battling it out for the title most years. Darnold & Allen are both the real deal.

  24. Josh Allen had 20 tds passing and 9 tds rushing last year. He also had 9 interceptions and 4 fumbles lost. Rushed for 510 yards. He had 4 4th quarter comebacks and 5 game winning drives and 10 wins overall for Buffalo. Hardly a horrible QB.

  25. 14 fumbles last year

    Yikes is right!

    2019 Cam Newton:

    50-89 (56.2%), 572 yds, 0 TDs, 1 Int

    2019 Jarrett Stidham:

    2-4 (50.0%), 14 yds, 0 TDs, 1 Int

  26. I am sure both of these QB’s will win at least the same amount of Super Bowls as Marino and Kelly.

  27. Neither one has beaten a playoff team yet. That’s not a good sign. Josh Allen has shown more promise, he played pretty good in the playoffs against the Texans. So I would rank Josh Allen ahead of Sam Darnold.
