Matt Breida sees similarities in Dolphins, 49ers running back groups

Running back Matt Breida turned out to be wrong when he said in April that he thought the 49ers would bring back all of last season’s running backs for the 2020 campaign.

Breida wound up as the odd man out and was traded to the Dolphins during the draft in a deal that Breida said left him “kind of shocked” when he first found out. That shock has subsided and now Breida is able to take stock of his new surroundings.

The Dolphins signed Jordan Howard as a free agent, drafted Malcolm Perry in the seventh round and have Myles Gaskin and Kalen Ballage back from last season to form a group that Breida feels is similar to the one he left behind with the Niners.

“We’re all coming in there willing to compete, willing to make each other better,” Breida said on NFL Network. “That’s one thing that I learned quick in these virtual meetings with these is guys is that they’re eager to get better. That’s kinda how we were last year in the running back room in San Francisco and that’s gonna go a long way to help us get where we gotta get.”

The 49ers had the second-most rushing yards in the league last season while Dolphins were the worst in the league with 1,156 yards to show for their efforts. Adding Breida and Howard should help them improve on that front and that should help improve their chances of climbing in the standings even if they don’t match the success the 49ers found in 2019.

  1. Uh, the quality of the offensive line goes further in improving the run game than of how good any RB is on his own. Another component is how good is the offensive system? Do defenses have to respect the passing game?… if not, the Dolphins will see 8-9 man fronts which doesn’t help. There are lots of components that go into the success or failure of the running game some of which are higher up the food chain than how good the RB is. If a guy like Gurley (pre-knee arthritis) in 2016 could only get 3.2 ypc behind a bad OL then nobody can run behind a bad OL. Same OL (save for 1 player), add in a new offensive system that forced defenses to respect the passing game and in 2017 Gurley averaged 4.7 ypc and was in the discussion for league MVP.

  2. “Breida hit the NFL lottery going from Garappolo to Tagovialoa.”

Let’s see if Tagovialoa gets the Dolphins to the Super Bowl, in his first full year of starting, like Garoppolo did for the 49ers.

I hope that Breida does well in Miami, and he has the right attitude, but gong from the 49ers to the Dolphins is a huge downgrade for him.

  3. The dolphins had Raheem mostert and Damien Williams on their roster. Let both go. Both scored td’s in super bowl last year. Damien won a ring.

And Chad Henne and Matt Moore both got Rings too. Whats your point… guys dont fit a system they get sent somewhere else.

  5. Wasn’t garropolo in year 4 when he finally got a starting job lmao.

Also anyone with a brain knows if the 49ers had an above average QB they would have won the superbowl. If you don’t think he was holding that team down then your blind.

The patriots got the better end of that trade imo.
