Michigan Governor on sports: “We’re going to watch it differently”

Michigan Gov. Gretchen Whitmer signed an executive order last week allowing pro sports teams to return to business, without fans. And while she wants to see her local sports teams return, she’s being realistic about what that’s going to look like.

Via John Niyo of the Detroit News, Whitmer said during an interview on 97.1 The Ticket that having many fans in the stands won’t be realistic for some time.

“It’s really important that we resume some normalcy, but do it in a safe manner,” Whitmer said. “I’ve had people say, ‘Oh, you’re gonna cancel sports.’ I said, ‘C’mon, let’s keep our wits about us. I’m not gonna to cancel sports, but we’re going to watch it differently.’ And that’s for our safety. And maybe this is one season of doing it this way, but it’s the smart way to do it to keep the athletes safe, keep the sport going and give us the ability to enjoy it.”

Whitmer has said for weeks that full stadiums probably aren’t a reality until there’s a vaccine, and it seems the NFL is gradually acknowledging that things are going to be far from normal as well. Some teams are holding back ticket inventory, several have offered refunds for season tickets, and the league announced a plan to tarp off the first few rows of seats in each stadium to create a barrier between players and fans (but mostly to sell advertising to offset revenue losses).

While the NFL is a month away from training camps opening, other sports are moving forward with their returns in late July, and concerns remain.

“Any time people are traveling, especially between states and especially coming from a state that’s having such a massive outbreak like Florida is right now, we all have to be cautious,” Whitmer said. “So the MLB and the Tigers have a really thoughtful, evidence-based plan to keep people quarantined to ensure that they mitigate spread and test all their employees as well as the athletes.

“I think we can navigate this. We just have to be really smart and remember this virus hasn’t changed. The only thing that’s changed is we’ve learned how to live with it better to protect ourselves, And that’s why we all have to keep our guard up. I see outbreaks happening in Michigan because people are letting their guard down. And that’s something that’s really important, that every one of us masks up when we’re out and about, that we stay six feet apart, and remember, you’re always safer at home. Unless you need to go out, if you can stay home, that’s the best way to stay safe.”

And that’s going to mean a lot of people enjoy their sports this year from the safety of their own televisions.

  1. Protecting ourselves is about discipline: the discipline to disinfect or wash your hands to preven infection or cross-contamination, the discipline to stay 6 feet from peopple we do not live with, the discipline to wear a mask in public to protect OTHERS.

Its like being a Patriot about your life and the lives of others: Do. Your. Job.

If we all do our job, we get sports on TV. If we don’t, we may not have sports at all.

  2. 12- I agree wholeheartedly, unfortunately there are tons of people (including certain politicians) who seem to think it is a big hoax, and refuse to wear masks or do anything else to help their fellow citizens- that is why we are going into huge numbers again while (most of)the rest of the world is indeed flattening the curve. Americans seem to be either too stupid or too selfish to be concerned with anything other than their own wishes and well being

    Ray Davies wears a mask.

  4. So the Lions fans get to watch their team get worked ONLY from home now. What different way…

  5. I get that this is in Michigan but in Wisconsin, for example, the infection rate of covid-19 is .005 and the death rate of covid-19 is .00014. These are calculations given the entire state population – not whom has tested. So the results are extremely low.

This woman said weed shops could stay open but you could not buy lawn seed. You could row a boat but not go out on a boat with a motor. Her inconsistency and stubbornness have been laughable. Nothing she has said has made any sense.
    Wake up man.

  7. Maybe this will help the Lions play better without the fans booing them for 60 years plus.

Thats the best you can come up with….one line from a self copied Kinks tune…..?

  9. Michigan is a dumpster fire, that’s why the Lions fit so perfectly well in that state!

60 years plus and they still can’t figure it out, just like the democratic leadership in this country.

  10. This means you can watch the game from home, while Whitmer travels to her cabin every weekend.

    But you cant

  11. Smart money on no football this year. Too many stupid people/players who aren’t careful enough.

  12. “How many dead? Today? Tomorrow?”

People die dude, it’s part of life. Millions die every year from diseases, drunk drivers, abortions, etc…

  13. Michigan needs some new leadership. They are a mess. Along with Illinois, Minnesota, New York and California to name a few!

  14. So everyone saying wear a mask, it’s not about you. We’ll, it’s not about you either! Why do your irrational fears override everything? Masks cannot be enforced, unless you plan on arresting everyone that won’t wear one. Good luck with that, I’ll be waiting.

    99.5% survival rate

    ******************************************************************************

Tell that to the 550+ people in my city alone who’ve already died from it. Easy to dismiss it when it’s just a number that hasn’t hit you personally yet.

How damn hard is it to wear a mask to protect other people? It’s not about you.

Those telling others how to live and yet state in the same sentence its not about you.
It is about me if you are forcing me to wear a mask. At no other time in history have we been forced to do such a thing. And that comes with its own consequences. Read the EXPERT analysis on wearing a mask and the side affects. Read up on how our immune system works.

If your “City” has a population of a million, thats a .00055 death rate. Totally acceptable. Science is cold as ice, bro.

  18. 99.5% survival rate
    +++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++
99.5 % survival sounds good until you start actually doing the math of large numbers. 99.5 % survival means 0.5% die. US population is ~ 330,000,000. 330,000,000 x 0.005 = 1,650,000 deaths. I am not smart enough to know how many will get infected, but its going to be large number.

Lets not forget the 99.5 % survival occurred at a time when hospital care is available. When the wards fill to overflowing, the death rate will increase.

To provide a little perspective, in WWII the number of US deaths was 418,500 in 4 years. Source: National World War II Museum.

  19. How hard is it to stay home if you’re afraid to get sick? Someone not wearing a mask, avoid them If you’re scared.

I chose me, you chose you.

Also, there’s this new thing call Amazon, they can actually deliver groceries to your doorstep. It’s amazing!

“Telling others how to live” — it’s wearing a mask when you go out in public. There are so many other decisions that are so much more fundamental to how you live.

Also, try getting your information from actual medical experts, not people posting “expert analysis” on PatriotEagle.Gadsden or your high school buddy on Facebook from 15 years ago. There’s no indication of harmful effects to people who wear masks as a countermeasure against COVID. Quit seeking information from shady sources just because it aligns with your preconceived notions.

  21. The thing is people cant be trusted to wear and mask and wash their hands ( even if you take the social distancing out of it for a minute ).

Do you realise how crazy that sounds? Grown up adults, cant be trusted to wash their hands and wear a face mask to reduce other peoples risk of dying because they think it makes them look week? For crying out loud, this is why states are closing down again, and other states are shutting out other states.

Something as simple as washing your hands and wearing a mask to protect peoples lives is NOT a political issue, its a human decency issue. Until people grow the hell up and get over themselves, this is what happens. GET OUT YOUR OWN WAY

  22. The folks here still seeing this as political issue are just plain stupid. Check out the infection rates in the states that went lock-step with the “it’s the flu” guy. Facts you conveniently choose to ignore.

You people want to point out ONE flu season that’s lasted 7 months with no end in sight? Turn you brain on or shut up.

  23. No problem with making masks a requirement. What is strange to me is the hypocrisy. It’s ok for thousands to show up to protests with many not wearing masks? But you can’t do that in a stadium? I actually am fine with masks but there needs to be universal rules.

Also thought it was funny her husband tried to strong arm their boat marina by dropping her name on them. Lol.

Almost all protests were outdoors and you’re allowed to be outdoors without a mask in most jurisdictions. In that sense, no rules were violated because there’s no rule to break. You’re supposed to wear a mask if you’re outdoors and within 6 ft of others in public areas, but that’s only a recommendation, partly because it’d be so difficult to enforce. (I’m not saying protesters who didn’t wear masks were doing the right thing. I think they should’ve worn them, and most of the protesters where I live did wear them. It’s just that there is no law to break, meaning there’s no hypocrisy in enforcement.)

Once you step into a stadium, you’re now on someone else’s property where rules can be enforced, so if they say no masks, that’s the rule. It’s not that different from “no shirt/no shoes” at the grocery store or dress code rules at clubs.

    99.5% survival rate

Nice to see a glass-half-full guy! Just keep in mind that with a US population of 300 million (rounding down) a 99.5% survival rate means that 1.5 million people die. Not quite 1/10th of the way there yet, but hey, “merica, right? The sanctity of human life has always been a myth.

  27. 25% to 50% of the coronavirus deaths are inaccurate. Meaning people died from other issues than COVID. This pandemic is only out of control in the US during an election year. Man you people are naive and need to stop fueling the destruction of our country with the hijacked dem party.

  28. The testing isn’t even accurate, a positive “COVID-19” case could be for the common cold or any coronavirus strand. Go to the cdc website if you don’t believe me.

  29. The NFL has become a studio sport. Go to a December game in NY… it’s 37degrees and drizzle and you watch the players stand there waiting for the commercial to be over..Better to flick to another game during the break on your large tv or get a snack. And during the covid year a lot safer!
