Rodney Harrison: I don’t know how we’re going to have a season

Count former NFL safety and current NBC broadcaster Rodney Harrison among those who doubts the NFL’s ability to mount the 2020 season amid the COVID-19 pandemic.

Harrison joined Mike Florio for a conversation about the difficulties involved with playing this year and Harrison approached the question along similar lines as Saints safety Malcolm Jenkins. Jenkins said he wasn’t confident that a “trust system” regarding how careful others are being about following protocols can work and Harrison raised the same concern about what players are doing when they are away from the field.

Case numbers are rising in many parts of the country and no vaccine is expected to be available in the near term, which led Harrison to ask “what’s changed” about the scenario for playing over the last few months.

“In football, you have to breathe on people,” Harrison said. “You have to tackle people, you spit on people. Guys have cuts, guys cough. . . . I don’t know how we’re going to have a season.”

Harrison acknowledged that the financial implications would lead many players to take the risk of contracting COVID-19 rather than sitting out the season. If those players do bring it into the locker room, the prospect of several players contracting it at the same time will go up and Harrison noted that creates other issues that would compromise the season.

“Competitively, it’s an unfair advantage,” Harrison said. “If Atlanta’s playing against Tampa Bay and Matt Ryan comes down with coronavirus, then the Falcons probably won’t even have a chance.”

The league has not wavered from its plan to go through with the 2020 season as scheduled and the coming weeks may test that resolve before camps open their doors in late July.

  1. I agree, there is no way they can have a season. There are just too many variables, and in too many places.

  2. Correction: if Atlanta is playing against Tampa Bay, the Falcons won’t have a chance even if Matt Ryan does not have coronavirus 🙂

  3. “Case numbers are rising in many parts of the country”

    That’s right, “case numbers.”

Deaths are not on the rise but “case numbers” are, what does that tell you?

  4. It’s growing exponentially because we have terrible short sighted leaders. We will have 100k cases a day soon. Just unbelievable how badly America handled this situation. Most of us were watching videos leaked out of Wuhan in January and yet our country did nothing! No preparation for the inevitable! Better get used to UFC as the only sport going forward, team sports are done.

  5. All the owners care about is lost profits…I doubt you’ll see any of them at the games even if they are played.

  6. If the PGA can’t go a week without new cases, how is it even remotely possible for the NFL? Just look at the players now, and previously during the shutdown. Without a doubt, there will be teams with serious outbreaks. Don’t just think Matt Ryan – think the entire offensive line contracting the virus together.

  7. People, you do realize that there is a reason that covid-19 is named 19 right? There will be another and another and another. It’s never going away. Even with a vaccine there will be a new strain over and over just like the Flu. The sooner everyone realizes this the better. We cannot just live under a bubble forever. You might as well just close the league forever if you want everyone to just be safe.

  8. If Dr. Fauci is correct and we hit 100,000 new cases a day. There will be no football or even an economy for that matter! Save the economy, wear the damn mask!

D’Ya think? There are probably a dozen owners over the age of 75! The virus hasn’t been kind to the elderly.

    Leaders…plural.

Trumpy and on down to all the right wing extremists who don’t believe in fact, science, truth and data and care more about greed and bibles.

Pretty clear who is right and who is so very wrong.

It tells me you watch too much Fox news.

  12. The oddest thing about this whole thing is MLB and NBA are having reduced seasons and making huge changes, but NFL is… taking off 1 preseason game. We don’t really know anything outside of a couple people saying “it’s amazing how much prep work the NFL has done”.

I think they can have a season but they need to be ready and willing to make changes and it doesn’t seem like thats happening.

It should tell you to continue reading. The rise in deaths is expected to catch up in a month, according to health authorities.

  14. With all of those billionaire owners.. they will find a way to play. Probably not with fans in the stands, but the NFL will find a way to isolate players, play, and make money still.

The 19 isn’t sequential; it’s for 2019. Yes, there will be another virus out there, but a pandemic on this level? There haven’t 18 before this one dude….

While there are other coronavirus strains out there and have been for a long time, this is named COVID 19 because it was found in 2019. We will get through this, but let us hope it is not with our heads down using our forehead to try and plow through the thing…

  17. If Dr. Fauci is correct and we hit 100,000 new cases a day. There will be no football or even an economy for that matter! Save the economy, wear the damn mask!

What has he been correct about so far?

  18. So, you have a lot of new young players who are experiencing real money for the first time in their lives. For some, it’s looking at a bank account with 2 commas! And game checks that just keep rolling it in.
Yeah, I figure these guys will self isolate all season, and put on a mask on their once weekly trips to the grocery store. Wouldn’t you?

  21. “If” in 2020 is now taken as “when”. Relax!

If a large earthquake hits tomorrow and California sinks. There will be no games in LA. Brilliant insight cheap shot Harrison.

Whatever we all do, we should assume the worst will happen and hide. Grow up people, life happens whether you hide or not.

  22. I like that I didn’t have to scroll down more than two comments to see that billymutt thought of the exact same joke that came to mind about Atlanta’s chances of winning

  23. Maybe these guys will be living in the stadiums, like an insurance commercial. That would keep them safe.

  24. Right: blame protests, never blame reopening.
Left: blame reopening, never blame protests.

    Maybe it was both…

  25. Numbers they don’t report are those who have no symptoms or those that have recovered. It would be easier to make informed decisions when all of the data is shared.

Umm, Trump shut down the gov’t for selfish political reasons causing mass chaos and in 2019, with Americans losing jobs, companies and momentum, and he cut cdc funcing in 2017, including China while it was already weakened by the Republican Congress used as leverage, neither situation had ever happened before. Those two situations have destroyed the economy and people’s lives.

Try educating yourself. These are not political spectrum issues where party affiliation matters….They are basic American issues and must haves for society.

  27. with covid numbers rising the season should be cancelled…risking the players and fans health for money is not worth it…

  28. Educate yourself on the definition of contradiction.
You say its a neither side issue, but its the republicans fault. Smooth.
