Shaq Thompson: Cam Newton “still has it”

The Panthers have a new quarterback in Teddy Bridgewater, but their former quarterback is the talk of the NFL. Cam Newton signed a one-year deal with the Patriots on Sunday.

At least one of Newton’s former teammates seems genuinely happy to see Newton get a shot to replace Tom Brady.

Panthers linebacker Shaq Thompson declared Wednesday that Newton “still has it.”

“Man, I was happy for Cam,” Thompson told Colleen Wolfe of NFL Media. “I hated that it took so long for him to get signed. He’s an MVP quarterback. Cam still has it. And I’m happy for him, I’m glad the Patriots invested in him and I can’t wait to see Cam Newton come out there and play.”

Thompson, a first-round choice in 2015, has never been on an NFL roster without Newton, whom the Panthers released this offseason.

“I think Teddy’s definitely going to come in and change the offense. He has great weapons,” Thompson said. “His start with the Saints, 5-0, was just incredible. It just shows you that the Teddy that Minnesota had drafted back then is back. I’m happy to see that. I’ve always been a fan of Teddy, especially when he was at Louisville. So, I’m happy to have him as a teammate. I know that he has a lot of tremendous weapons around him and we built that offensive line so he could feel comfortable in the pocket.”

  1. What is “it”?

    A QBR over 70?

He’s averaged somewhere in the mid 50s his whole career…

Overhyped and a spoiled brat athelete.

  2. We get it. There’s simply no reason Cam sat on the market this long and had to settle for basically a veteran minimum contract and the Patriots are winning the super bowl with him. Because the rest of the league is inept. Only Belichick has the will to win.

    Thanks for all the articles.

  3. Total points scored :

Some people desperately need to want Belichick to succeed with other QB, otherwise they will be exposed as systematically born idiots.

Well, Belichick will be exposed in next 3 seasons anyway.

  5. Only Belichick has the will to win.

    ——————————–

With Belichick, Pats wouldn’t and will not win a single SB without a QB who has the skills to turn cheap short slot receivers into play makers.

Remember : All of Belichick’s “greatness” is built on that he didn’t have to overpay players for an offense that played better than Peyton’s offense in playoff, better than Brees’ offense in playoff, better than Rodgers’ offense in playoff.

It’s amazing how many people don’t realize that Belichick’s strength is defense. Not every SB is won by the QB. Sometimes the defense is the real determining factor. Look at Brady’s numbers for half of the SB wins.
His first against the Rams. 145 yards and 1 TD
Win against the Eagles. 236 yds and 2 TD’s
Last one against the Rams. 262 yards and 0 TD

The reason the Patriots won the division last year was not the offense – it was easily the defense and special teams. Why is it always which offense plays the best? Sometimes it is which defense played best.

Are you asking why Brady couldn’t put together 3 consecutive great games in playoff, even with crippled Gronk? Let me tell you : Rodgers and Brees couldn’t put together even 2.

BTW, it is ridiculous to claim “the strength is defense” when the team needed its QB to score 24-31 points in back to back playoff games.

Oh, about the SB in 2002 in which Brady “did nothing”.

Let us look what this so called game manager dld in 20-17 SB win with lousy 145 yds.

There were only 15 first downs and 8 of them by passing.

#1, From OWN 3 yd line, 2 first downs and 31 yds.(ended at 48 yd line)
#2, In the first offense TD, 2 first down and 1 TD and 32 yds.
#3, In the 2nd FG, 1 first down and 11 yds
#4, In the last winning drive, 3 first down and 53 yds.

Do a little math, shall we?

    2+2+1+3 = 8
    31+32+11+53 = 127

Math is hard. If any of this drive had failed, Pats wouldn’t have won the SB. and you forget : Pats wouldn’t even make playoff with any other QB.

Belichick won 2 SB’s as a defensive co-coordinator before he became the Pat’s HC. He has long been considered one of the greatest defensive minds.

I have no idea where you got that “the strength is defense” idea. Do you?

  10. Belichick won 2 SB’s as a defensive co-coordinator

    —————————

In 1986, Giants offense scored 371 points and with a 1500+ yards RB. In 3 playoff games, all the teams they played were like 380 points in 16 games.

1990, Giants offense played 39 minutes against 49ers, 40+ minutes against Bills.

You want to see what happened with Pats? here we go:

#1, In SB against Panthers, Pats offense played 38 mintues.
#2, In SB against Seahawks, Pats offense played 33 minutes.
#3, In SB against Falcons, Pats offense played 37 minutes during regular periods
#4, In SB against Eagles, Pats offense played only 26 minutes. How did Belichick’s #5 defense play?
#5, In AFCCG against Chiefs, Pats offense played 39 minutes.
#6, In SB agaisnt Rams, Pats offense played 33 minutes.

So please, there were lot of defenses that could have played better than Pats defense, and don’t use “dominating Peyton” as excuse, every good defense then dominated Peyton in playoff.

Do you know that in football, you don’t score in one play, but with a sequence of plays?

The reason an offense is bad is that they can’t put together several good sequences.

That is why NFL ranks defense by total yards allowed, not total points allowed.

So, if Belichick’s defense allowed 30 yards against lousy defense (not good enough to score), you would expect it would allow more yards, and enough to score. That is why Pats defense didn’t any better than Packers defense or Saints defense in playoff in last 5 years, though they ranked top 10 on total points allowed, thanks to lot of lousy offenses they played in regular seasons.

Relax, friend. You can list every game summary since the AFL merger. All good. I have been personally following the Patriots since Curt Gowdy was doing the games on NBC. Seen the good and bad. Brady has and will always be the greatest Patriot, and a statue will be erected. I follow the team differently than you. I study every draft pick, research every trade, understand the cap and all contracts coming up and expiring. I am more of a Belichick fan. And you are a Tom Brady fan. All good.

Posting a TEAM stat and calling it a player stat is a big stretch. This post completely ignores the quality of the team surrounding the player. I think everyone knows that the Patriots have been a far superior team to the Panthers. FYI – Do I think Cam is as good as Brady, no, far from it. Do I think Brady played a huge part of the scoring in NE? Yes.

In the one season where Newton actually had the quality of team around him that Brady historically had they had the same amount of points scored. In addition, the Panthers were a run first / play defense team. Want proof? In those same years you post, Newton only attempted 500 passes in a season 2 times…..Brady attempted UNDER 500 only once, the year he was suspended 4 games. Every other year he was close to or over 600 attempts. They had a different scheme and formula.

  14. I have been personally following the Patriots

    ——————————————————-

Bledsoe scored 276 points in 2000, and 20 points in first two games in 2001. (Mitchell Trubisky scored 280 points in 2019)

Do you know why Pats offense suddenly came back alive when Brady took over?

I can tell you with 100% certainty : it has nothing to do with Belichick, because I know what Brady did differently from any other QB.

  15. This post completely ignores the quality of the team surrounding the player

    —————————–

    cancerman2020,

When you have the skills to use cheap short slot receivers around you, when you have the skills to play time-control offense and still able to produce top 4 offense on total points scored, you will have a team around you with “great quality”.

“know his opportunities before snap so that when defenders realize whom his intended target is, it is already too late.”

That is how Brady was able to score average 3-10 points per game, like 100 more points in 16 games, which has nothing to do with Belichick.

Patriots fans give so much credit ON OFFENSE to a coach who was known a failure and who didn’t even talk to his QB and WR, who couldn’t give his QB a stable WR group with all the saved by his QB (cheap WR, cheap O-line and paycut). That is the most disgraceful thing fans can do to their QB.

  18. Built an OL? Trai Turner and Daryl Williams are gone. We’ve got Paradis and Moton back. The South Carolina rookie that played the last few games and LT from San Diego are unproven. Lots of questions on the OL
