Dolphins still optimistic about having “some” fans in the stands

Although the NFL is still planning to open the season on time with fans in stadiums, the COVID-19 situation in some states is trending in the wrong direction.

One of those states is Florida, and Miami Dolphins chief executive officer Tom Garfinkel acknowledged that for some fans, it simply won’t be safe to be in large crowds when the season starts. But Garfinkel believes that the stadium won’t be completely empty.

“We will be going to our fans saying if you are in any way at risk we don’t think you should come, assuming we are going to be playing with some level of fans — which at this point may or may not happen,” he said, via Barry Jackson of the Miami Herald. “It’s very uncertain. I am optimistic we will play with some fans and am hopeful about that. Assuming that’s the case, we will recommend to fans who are any way at risk not to come. Our season-ticket holders can roll over money into next year. They will be able to roll over and keep their tenure.”

Garfinkel said the Dolphins have “a no-fans scenario, a socially distanced stadium scenario, which would be roughly 15,000 to 20,000 fans and then maybe half-capacity scenario. We have all of those scenarios with a lot of details for each, different budgets for each. Things are changing daily. A few weeks ago, things were looking great and [the] last few weeks things have changed.”

No NFL teams will be playing at full capacity, as every team is going to block off the front few rows to keep players and fans from getting too close. But whether stadiums will otherwise be mostly full, mostly empty or totally empty remains to be seen. At this point, teams are still hoping they can make it happen with fans in attendance.

  1. Sure, why not? But only the infected fans, and people that don’t care. There are plenty of both.

  2. In florida ? Is there something the water? To many drinks with umbrellas at beach or something ? Whats going on ?

  3. This is beyond insane, south Florida is the new epicenter of infections.

    Talk about delusional.

  4. And here is an example of why a country like Italy that was in a devastating position has almost completely flattened the curve and we are setting record highs every day. We just don’t get it. This is a different animal, you can’t just will this to go away. Had the majority of people listened to the mandates, there probably would be a chance of having fans in the stadiums, but because some feel it is some kind of violation to wear a mask and social distance, we most likely are not going to have any of the 3 mains sports this year.

  5. NFL season will cancelled..Over 50,000 new cases reported yesterday and 38 states showing increases

  6. I don’t understand why some people are so against others going to sporting events. If you yourself is worried about catching the virus, stay home.

No one seemed to care to much about the nationwide protests last month which spread the virus among 20-30 year olds like wildfire. And guess what? While there was a spike in cases, there is no spike in deaths or hospitalizations.

And Baby Boomers NEVER would have stayed locked up in their 20s-30s for a virus that is virtually harmless to their generation. Yet now they want us to sit our lives away so they can feel “safe”. Hypocritical BS.

  7. The C19 deniers only have themselves to blame when precious football doesn’t come back. All you had to do was wear a mask and stop going to parties. Floridians right now are not wearing masks at all, not just at the beach.

  8. Just like the end of the first quarter week 1 last year when the Ravens were already winning
    30 – 0?

  9. What’s everyone so worried about? Our president says it’ll go away all by itself any day now…

  10. Are the Dolphins talking about for football or as an overflow treatment center?

  11. By the calculations I keep seeing in the news the amount of covid deaths will be around 95% of the worlds population by end of august and the rest of us will be fighting the covid zombies that are left….

Is that an irrational fear of pickles?

  13. The coronavirus is doing the Miami fans a favor it it is keeping them away from Dolphins games.

Typical response from someone uninterested in facts or the truth.

130,000 dead people disagree that this virus is “virtually harmless” to any generation.
Try to educate yourself on terms like asymptomatic spread, infection rates and selfishness before you continue to look so foolish.

Death rates lag infections by up to a month.

Go wrap yourself in a flag this weekend and party with your unmasked friends, family and other deniers.

The rest of us will hope for the day when people like you can show some compassion, tolerance and understanding of others.

  15. The people that think we can get back to normal are the ones PREVENTING us from getting back to normal.

I know that it looks like all Floridians don’t wear masks. I live in SW Florida. I would say in this region, 65% of us do wear masks and take this very seriously. I sure as hell do.
It is impossible to overcome the effects of Trump’s maskless hicks, however. Unfortunately, they are allowed to mingle with the educated, compassionate folks with self-control here.

Our Governor, DuhhhSantis, is slightly more stupid than his master, the Orange One, so we are going nowhere but down.

  17. 74,000 Colin Kaepernick holograms of him kneeling in the seats fist raised. The only logical next step in this world gone insane.

  18. It’s fitting that the hotspot of this virus is in President Incompetent’s fave state. That state is clueless. How’s that winning going?

  19. Dolphins still optimistic about having “some” fans in the stands…

and that’s without covid — ok too easy.
