Edmonton Eskimos keeping team name

Washington’s NFL franchise is under intense pressure to change its name. A Canadian Football League team announced it is keeping its name.

The Edmonton Eskimos will remain the Edmonton Eskimos, the Associated Press reports.

The team arrived at that decision following “an extensive year-long formal research and engagement program with Inuit leaders and community members across Canada.”

“The consistent feedback was a desire for more engagement with the club,” the team said in a statement. “There were a range of views regarding the club’s name but no consensus emerged to support a name change. The club has therefore decided to retain its name.”

The Eskimos’ research and engagement program “included meetings with Inuit leaders and community leaders in Iqaluit, Inuvik, Yellowknife and Ottawa; and a research phase with a combination of in-depth interviews with Inuit across the north and in Edmonton, and a telephone survey among a broad group of Inuit across Canada.”

  1. Plus, the CFL may fold anyway, so to spend money on a rebrand is probably unwise, and even unnecessary.

  2. Anyone else really miss the late 90’s and early 2000’s lately? 2020 is garbage. I can’t believe my friends are having kids in 2020; why bring life into a dying world?

  3. If Snyder does the same, and they get that type of response, will you finally leave them alone?

The money questions is, if they don’t change the name and Nike refuses to sell their merchandise, are they in violation with the agreement to the NFL?

Cause at the emd of the day, it’s all about the money.

  4. Same thing will happen with the Redskins… extensive review that will result in no name change.

  5. The difference between the Redskins and Eskimos is the Eskimos are a multi-championship winning team. Winning solves everything.

  6. Pains me to think how much time, money, and energy is wasted because adults have their feelings hurt.

  7. The US Canada border is still closed.

“Woke” mob is having trouble getting up here.

  8. Eskimo is not a derogatory word of itself. It can be deemed mildly offensive when used to describe all Inuit peoples. There are several groups that make up the Inuit people, the Eskimo being one of them. It would be like referring to all Native Americans as Seminoles, when Seminoles are but one of many tribes.

No the difference is they met with the groups for whom the name might cause offense.

  10. The Carolina logo is a black panther. Does anybody not see a problem with that, or is the radical organization black panthers considered a positive, good deeds group?

We don’t tolerate woke-scolds here in Canada.

    Not sure what you mean.
Prime Minister Trudeau constantly lectures Canadians on all the wrongs they’ve committed over the years. Won’t be long before the Eskimos are forced to change their name and the Blue Bombers will be next because they will be accused of promoting war.

Good. Sad when Canadians have more intestinal fortitude than Americans.

    ———

How is it sad? Seems like a slight to Canada with that statement. Canadians have more fortitude than damn near any country on Earth. We are very patriotic people and stand up for our own, including those who came here to seek refuge and be part of our great country. Most Canadians love the US too, like me, but the current state of America right now is showing why most of the world doesn’t feel the same way.

I hope the US can get a handle on the pandemic as well as the PC problems they are buried in before long so I can get back down there for some NFL, buffalo wild wings and 30 packs of beer for $14!

LOL, at least more than France.

  15. “We are very patriotic people and stand up for our own”. Really? The people from eastern Canada seem to have no use for western Canada. Is that Canada standing up for our own? Canada is great with the words, not so good with the follow through.

  16. Considering how terribly Canada treated Eskimos & indigenous peoples, it is classic; hypocritical appropriation.

  17. Oak & Spruce trees are offended by the Maple Leafs, We request the Toronto Maple Leafs change their name to Tim Horton’s Donuts. Thank you. That is all.

  18. The key word is Edmonton, they are more civilized than the United States. They talked things out first instead of having something pushed on them, ain’t that right Daniel Synder.

  19. I look forward to watching the CFL this year. That is the only sport left for me!

  20. Is it not possible, or even fathomable that these team names are established in tribute and admiration for a people? Even if modern views now paint that name as racist, viewed through this lens, it’s pretty clear why these names have come to be.

Next PETA will be out holding rally’s and protests to ban the Lions, Tigers and Bears, oh my, not to mention every type of bird of prey.
