Browns appear to be out of the bidding for Jadeveon Clowney

It appears we can cross the Browns off the list of teams interested in free agent Jadeveon Clowney.

After the Browns agreed to a renegotiated contract with Olivier Vernon, a league source told PFT that Cleveland is unlikely to continue pursuing Clowney, whom they had previously shown interest in signing.

Under Vernon’s old contract he was set to make $15.25 million, but it was non-guaranteed, meaning that the Browns could have cut Vernon upon signing Clowney. Vernon agreed to take a pay cut, but now $10.75 million of his 2020 pay is guaranteed, so there’s no doubt he’s going to make the roster. That probably doesn’t leave any room for Clowney.

It’s possible that the Browns wanted Clowney but his price was too high. It’s also possible that the Browns were expressing interest in Clowney primarily because they wanted to squeeze Vernon into taking a pay cut.

Regardless, Clowney will have to shop his services elsewhere. The Raiders, Titans and Seahawks are among the other teams that have shown some interest in Clowney.

  1. This guy has a brain of rocks, my hometown Dolphins basically offered this guy the most guaranteed money TWICE, and publicly he declined twice. I’m glad we didn’t sign him. He’ll have a another “core injury” by Week 10

  2. That 15 million guarantee was on John Dorsey. It’s looking more and more that drafting Nick Chubb was the only positive thing Dorsey did.

  3. Remember the hype on this guy coming out of college? Go back and check it out. You’d have thought it was the second coming of Lawrence Taylor.

  4. Cold Feet…No one wants to pay 15 million for about 7 games you would get out of him before he is on the IR shelf

  5. Because he was drafted #1 he thinks he’s as good as Aaron Donald or Khalil Mack.

  6. Someone will eventually sign him one year, less than $10. Maybe closer to $5. Or he sits out the year.

  7. He got famous off 1 big hit against michigan…..no one should even be considering anywhere near 20 mil

  8. Keep Vernon at $10.75 million or get Clowney at $15+ he is asking

Statistically they are the same player, including time on the IR

  9. the $$ seems to be drying up on big contracts . ie Jamis , Cam . why over pay when you dont have too ??

  10. NEVER HAD 10 SACKS IN A SEASON
PLAYED 16 GAMES ONLY ONCE IN 6 SEASONS
    HOW IS HE COMMANDING $20M+

  11. I hate to break it to Jadeveon but he is going to have to cross Washington off of his wish list. With Montez Sweat and Chase Young already in tow, the Skins really don’t have a spot for him, unless he is prepared to come in as a backup.

  12. this guy is a very overrated me/selfish player and never been serious about winning

    anyone signing him is foolish

  13. I don’t have the stats handy but I used to think he was overpriced until I realized he was the most double teamed guy on our team and still had an efficiency rating better than everyone too. If he can stay healthy, it’s worth it…. But if is a bad word.

  14. One trick pony, doesn’t rush the passer particularly well and has a concerning injury history. Buyer beware on this guy.

The guy you want is Ngakoue from Jax who hasn’t signed the Franchise Tag yet. Wait…he’s the opposite trick pony- good pass rusher but doesn’t tackle well. Plus he’s a malcontent who turned down $19 mill/year from the Jags.

  15. Now Browns go after Emerson Griffen. You’ll get two for the price of one and have a very good rotation.

  16. He has the talent and skill to be a 15 million a year player, but hasn’t proved it yet. Till he does, he is a 10 million player, at best.

  17. Thinking he will sign with the cowboys on a 1 year prove it deal and try to cash out next year much like Robert Quinn did last season. 1 year 8-10 mil

  18. Remember before the draft everyone was saying he was going to be better than Bruce Smith? Yeah, how did that work out. That’s an insult to Bruce who was an absolute monster every play and every game as opposed to Clowney who brings it on about 25% of the plays. I wonder what he’ll do when every team decides he’s not worth bothering with. I hope Clowney is content with earning $0M this year since he has out-smarted himself just like Melvin Gordon did last year.

    By the way….bravo….

He’s more McDonald (clown) than Mack or Donald.

  19. I feel kind of bad for Everson Griffen who’s waiting for this genius to sign so his opportunities are clarified.

Stated he wants to play for a winner so don’t think they ever made his list.

  21. I am not surprised at all. He had better drop his price quick or he will be on the outside looking in.

And if NE signed him you would be crowing about what a genius move it was by BB

  23. The Browns need to stop collecting star power and start building a roster that can win and coaches who make good decisions.

  24. Out of the bidding, or out of the plan? Doubt Clowney wanted to play for the browns.

  25. I agree with samapoc, build your roster and stay away of the guys looking to break the bank all they do is take the money and ride the wave.

  26. Out of all the teams that supposedly were interested in Tom Brady, Tampa Bay was never mentioned prior to his signing. I suspect the same will hold true for Clowney. Most of the time it’s the agents spreading the rumors to try to manufacture a fake bidding war for their client.

  27. He looks like Deacon Jones or an Alan Page once or twice a year, then disappears. Just don’t see the consistency with this guy. There are probably a lot of guys in the NFL who are playing better, game in and game out, who people don’t even know, and aren’t getting the publicity that Clowney gets.
