NFL referees plan to wear masks on the field

NFL referees are expected to wear masks on the field during games this season.

NFL Referees Association executive director Scott Green told Tom Pelissero of NFL Media that on-field officials are expected to wear some kind of face covering and gloves. Masks are one of the easiest and most effective ways to prevent the spread of COVID-19, and although players say it’s not practical to ask them to wear masks, officials should be able to do their jobs with masks on.

Officials are also looking into using handheld electronic whistles to stop plays, rather than blowing whistles.

The officials’ union is asking for the league to provide testing twice a week, once while the officials are at home and once after they’ve arrived at the game location.

The average age of officials is 53, and with concerns that older officials are particularly vulnerable to COVID-19, they are negotiating the possibility of some officials opting out of the season.

  1. Well, since they’re used to wearing blindfolds already, this shouldn’t make too much of a difference.

  2. It doesn’t make a difference if they wear one or not either the season is going to be cancelled and even if they have a mask on the terrible ref’s can’t hide

  3. Here , I’ll fix it…..no refs no players…just use madden 2020 or whatever it is.

  4. So, the refs will be tested before games and determined to be negative. What is the purpose of masks? Who are they protecting? Totally ridiculous.

  5. I played golf the other day with a mask on. My first 3 holes were beyond terrible. I then pulled down the mask when hitting and played well. So they may want to employ a similar proceedure.

For starters, tests aren’t perfect. A negative result doesn’t guarantee someone’s actually COVID-free.

Second, putting on and wearing a mask is probably on the list of top 5 easiest things someone needs to do in any given day (seriously, putting on pants or shoes is harder than putting on a mask), so why not do it as a precaution.

Why would wearing a mask affect your swing?

  8. We should always wear masks from now on. It can only help us be safer. If all our kids wore masks at school, maybe we would have less colds.

  9. This nation has been defeated. If we’re going to have sports, we can’t have them here; we all know it will not last. I can only see it working on islands, such as Hawaii, Bermuda, or the Bahamas.

  10. The masks are a disguise to hide their faces from the dismal calls they make…BOOOOOOOOO!

  11. The players won’t come to a consensus on playing, so there probably won’t be a season. There will be some kind of deal made where the players still get paid and we will be expected to watch reruns of old games on Sunday afternoon. Don’t count on watching football if no other pro sports leagues manage to make a go of it. The coronavirus might be the end all for many organized activities. Everything is getting canceled. Fear is a strong deterrent

  12. Players need to start training while wearing a mask. Get they need to get used to it.

In general, we all need to get used to doing cardio wearing a mask so that it’s no big deal to wear one when we’re doing normal business.

  13. One would think a elite athlete could handle the mask. Better then some fat guy in a Zebra shirt.

  14. So refs passing out on the fields this year?
Hmmmmm could make Browns games a little more exciting…but I doubt it.

Why are all these selfish NFL execs and players trying to play football during a worldwide pandemic?

Why don’t these guys stay at home like we’ve all had to and are still being told to do and show that they really care about black lives?

Seems to me they all (players included) care more for money than for black lives or anyone’s lives obviously.

They’ll get people killed, just wait.

Surgeons perform all kinds of procedures that require absolute pinpoint accuracy and precision, with far less margin for error and far worse impications if the do err than even a professional golfer. Consruction workers operate 14″ gas powered concrete saws that can catch and bind within inches of pressurized gas lines, something that is far more physically demanding and dangerous than recreational golf. All while wearing masks. If they can do it, something tells my you can too. Half or more of golf is the mental game. This is part of it. I don’t dispute it affects you first time out. But man, if that’s your complaint, just handle it.
