Washington name change “imminent”

The thorough review has moved rapidly.

Eight days after Washington announced that a “thorough review” of the team’s name would occur, PFT has confirmed that a name change for the franchise is “imminent.”

Per a source with knowledge of the situation, owner Daniel Snyder has become committed to changing the name before the start of the season, given the pressure he has faced in recent days.

Charles Robinson of Yahoo Sports, in an appearance on the Saturday Sports Brunch with Clarence Hill and D.J. Ringgengberg, said that the name change is imminent, that a new name could be unveiled in the next few days, and that other teams have been told to remove the current name and logo from their online platforms.

  1. Washington Warlocks…or will ‘witches’ object due to lack of diversity/inclusion? Whatever name is chosen is certain to have some niche group(s) object and ‘boycott’ the new name.

  2. Sad that we’re more concerned with the name of the team than the team owner’s foundation that was helping native americans. Who’s next?

  3. After reading about Redtails I’d be surprised if they don’t chose it. Would be PR hit and easy to maintain the current colors…

  4. 40 years. That’s how long clear thinking people have been complaining about this name.

  5. I have to admit that a part of me will miss the Redskins name. It’s as synonymous with the game as ‘Bears’ and ‘Packers’. But times move on.
In the 1960’s, in JFK’s famous Moon speech, he says that the USA will conquer space just like it conquered this country. Times move on and, regretful or not, it is for the better.

  6. So…the Washington Imminents. Kind of has a ring to it. Not a SUPER BOWL ring, but a ring none the less.

  7. Washington Warlocks conjures up imagery of ‘curses’, ‘spells’, ‘magic’, ‘potions’, and other nasty but humorous references to offensive and defensive wizardry. Perhaps Washington could get name sponsorship of its new DC stadium from Merlin Cybersecurity.

  8. Let’s not forget On Monday (7-6), 15 Native American organizations ask that ALL sports teams cease the use of Native American imagery !!

  9. The DC Dans? The Washington Phogg? Homestead Grays? Hogs? Red Hogs? Warthogs? OK, enough with the fun, here is the name; The Washington Warriors! Plus Danny Boy already owns the name. Not my favorite, but waaay better than what we now have.

  10. Sad that we’re more concerned with the name of the team than the team owner’s foundation that was helping native Americans. Who’s next?

  11. If the Skins are changin their name so should the Chiefs.

I personally dont care, doesnt bother me either way but if were gonna be sticklers for equality nowadays etc then the Chiefs should be catching just as much hotwater as the Skins yet ive seen next to 0 articles, posts, tweets, etc. About them.

How are the two team names really any different, i guess you can argue Redskin is slightly more disparaging but the Cheifs are still appropriating indigenous american culture and imagery.

All i ask for is consistency if were gonna be woke and appropriate.

  12. I saw a joke posted… the new name will be the “D.C. Redskins” . Which was quite amusing. But seriously, I’m hoping for Red Wolves.

  13. Give it a rest. The joke is going to be one them, if there is no football this season. Not to mention, who’s going to buy NFL merchandise when people are struggling to maintain their own business, pay bills, pay college tuition for family members, and are pissed at this now transformed identity politics-ridden league, which clearly did everything possible to ruin football this century.

Unfortunately consistency does not matter anymore , only if it fits the narrative . I see it all the time here . Great post .

  15. Washington Maroons. Perfect fit for the current state of the franchise and the color scheme that they want to keep.

  16. Betty sure its gonna be warriors. Boring but can keep an idea of the history and colors.

Overreact much? Good gracious, it’s a simple name change and you’ve blown it up into the end of the world as you know it.

  18. I really hope we see the “Washington Redtails”. To see a team name that celebrates the military and African American history would be really cool and a great move in such divisive times.

  19. How about the Washington Illuminatis? Just to have a few yuks and laughs at the heads of the conspiracy buffs exploding.

Unfortunately, it’s obviously not going to end here. After renaming all Native American sports teams, up next will be American stated and city names, such as Washington and Washington D.C. Then, they’ll want to do away with all presidents and Union heroes on our currency. Next, they’ll want to change our national anthem and American flag. It’s affecting all aspects of American life. They want to wipe our identity away, period. Don’t give them an inch.

  21. The Kneelers, for both caving to the mob and kneeling before their opponents so often the last 20 or so seasons.

  22. I suggest the Washington Trumps – no other name could strike as much fear into the hearts of their opponents as that.

  23. There seems to be a lot of buzz for Red Tails, though the more I think about it, any name that’s associated with an ethnicity may come under scrutiny at some point for whether it’s appropriate as a sports team name.

There’s also the reality that the group of Black airmen were really more associated with Alabama, where they trained and the group was formed. So there’s not really much of an association with Washington. It would be like the Pittsburgh 49ers – mixing up history.

Personally, I would like some tie to native Americans to remain, but am not sure how to do it respectfully. So it may just not work.

I suggested the Redhawks a while back. They could keep the colors, keep the feather, and just put a hawk’s-head profile in the circle.

  24. The Washington Imminents? That doesn’t sound very catchy, but I’m sure the folks in marketing know what they are doing.

  30. Saw it first as a joke on Twitter but Washington Pigskins is really growing on me. They would never do it, but it would be so much fun. It would embrace all of their previous Hogs and ‘skins history and pigskin is literally synonymous with football. The possibilities for team logos alone would be endless. But let’s be honest, this is the No Fun League so Pigskins doesn’t have a chance in hell. We will be stuck with some safe, lame, unoriginal, designed by committee name that no one can object to but that no one loves either.

And here’s the slippery slope, proving if you give whiners an inch, they try to take the whole football field. Enough.

Also, I’m offended by Cowboys and the star logo. Let’s make Jerry Jones dump billion dollar trademarks so we can be woke.

  36. “Sad that we’re more concerned with the name of the team than the team owner’s foundation that was helping native americans.”

That’s a false choice. The owner is allowed to keep the foundation even if the name is changed.

  37. Washington Illuminatis. Have the eye from the back of the $1 bill as the helmet logo.

  38. If the Skins are changin their name so should the Chiefs.

Uhhh…nope. “Redskins is derogatory. Chiefs is just what the leaders were called. It’s not derogatory at all.

The “Tomahawk Chop” along with the moronic chant, is a different issue. That should be banned simply for being obnoxious.

  39. I suggest the Washington Trumps – no other name could strike as much fear into the hearts of their opponents as that.

It won’t inspire fear, but it will inspire nausea.

  46. We are right back to the slippery slope. Change Redskins and the whiners want more changes. It’s hard to stomach those who think they know what’s best for society getting their way.

The only reason they are changing the name is sponsors and advertisers will not support the team. For years there has been pressure to change the name of the team, and it never happened. It is happening now because the money is leaving. I guess Fedex and Amazon are the “whiners” in your statement.

  47. At the outbreak of the Civil War, Georgetown University was unique in that it had an equal number of students from both the North and the South. After the war as the country struggled with reconciliation, Georgetown adopted Blue and Grey as their school colors and later became known as The Hoyas (Georgetown Prep, The Little Hoyas). In these polarizing times the Nation’s Capital should follow that exemplary example and call the the team “The Hoya Skins.” The old timers can cling to the “Skins” while the woke crowd can gravitate to the Hoya part. Seems like a win win.

  48. Wonder what the logo will be. It sounds like the current logo is gone. Not sure the old spear with feathers logo will work. A year with no logo on the helmet until the rebrand is completed?

Personally, I would be fine with Washington Warriors. May be boring but fits the theme of the past and the alliteration sounds good.

I truly hope they do not pick Red Tails. Mad props to the Tuskeegee Airmen because those dudes are true warriors and heroes. But I think the team needs to get out of featuring one ethnic group. The team and the fans are represented by multiple ethnicities so lets just make it something generic. Plus, people will rag on the team and say, “We are going to beat you til you have a red tail and stupid crap like that. No thanks.

  58. I’ve heard that they’re almost certain to go with Warriors. I’m not sure that’s the best idea because at some point, someone will be beating the drum to change that, too. It happened at Marquette.

  59. Keep dreaming when you say Washington donates to all these native Americans tribes, what a joke. Snyder’s OAF foundation may have donated a small amount in 2014 but was giving $0 by 2016 or ‘17. You must get your “facts” the same place trump gets his….good try though, loser

With no Indian imagery, I doubt it. In the NBA Golden State makes it work just fine.

Really? What you are basically saying is let us continue to call you a derogatory name for money. Yes the world runs on Greed and power, but some things have out lived their time. To be perfectly honest I could live with the name up until I learned the team was named out of spite by an awful owner who was racist.

  72. Will this force every sports team in the country, including high schools, colleges, and the pros to look at the origins of their nicknames and change them?
I looked at quite a few of them and discovered that probably the most well known sports name there is — the Yankees — was a derogatory name used by Confederate soldiers toward the Union soldiers in the Civil War.
St. Johns changed their name quite a few years ago to the Red Storm and I still mess up and refer to them as the Redmen.
I know it will take me forever to remember that the Oakland Raiders will be the Las Vegas Raiders, too.

  73. Washington HOGS. They were the real deal and played on Washington teams that actually achieved success. The stands would fill up with “Hog-ettes” again. Fun days would perhaps begin again. Works for me and doesn’t seriously offend anyone.
