Report: Washington name to be retired on Monday

Imminent” means Monday.

A day after reports emerged that Washington would be dumping its name soon, Ben Fischer of Sports Business Daily has placed a timetable on the change. Per Fischer, the team intends to retire its current name on Monday. The move will be made only 10 days after the team announced, under intense pressure from sponsors like FedEx and Nike, that it would conduct a “thorough review” of the team name.

But here’s the twist: According to the report, a new name won’t be unveiled with the announcement that the old name is kaput. This means that, for an indefinite period of time, Washington won’t have a name.

The delay in announcing a new name relates to trademark issues. Earlier today, we posted the results of a search of the United States Patent and Trademark Office database, which reveals that one man has been squatting on various potential names over the past several years. It does not appear that the team has filed for trademark protection as to any alternatives, yet.

  1. There we go out with the old and in with the old what a easy transition that was. This scenario with the name change is just comical. I have a better suggestion get rid of the name and then the team this will make everyone happy

  2. Is it league policy that a team MUST have a nickname? Because if not, I would just take the Cher or Madonna approach and just claim to be “Washington”. That way everyone will still call them the Redskins and Snyder gets the last laugh after all lol.

But here are some suggestions anyway:

    Washington Begins
    Washington Footballers
    Washington Beyond
    Washington Freedomballers

  3. Just don’t pick a team name. It’s only a matter of time before they’ll find the new one offensive. This was a very slippery slope and the door has been opened for many more teams and universities to be attacked. It won’t stop here.

  4. Very interesting! We all remember when Snyder purchased the Washington team one of the first things he did was chisel the Jack Kent Cook name off the stadium and then sold the namig rights to FedEX. This should be strong indication as to nyder’s thinking. And that is “follow the money.” So when the money is “right” Snyder will suddenly have a midnight dream, seance or receive a transcendental message and and then announce a new team name!

  5. Since there will be no season in 2020, they will have plenty of time to sort out any naming issues.

  6. I’m not a fan of any of the options that are being squatted on. I hope they pick something completely different and unexpected.

Well…within reason – let’s not have the designers of the new Rams logo (which looks like it’s a C for Chargers) help them out or they just may end up with an even worse name.

  7. Where are all the angry And rude posters who swore this would, all in caps, NEVER happen?

  8. Please not the red wolves … that’s so corny ugh
    Nothing honestly fits
But I’ll take warriors and red tails over red wolves !!

  9. Everybody in DC loved the XFL Defenders. Why not buy the rights of the name and officially make it the “Washington Defenders” with those great red uniforms.

    The Washington Defenders 2020~!!

  10. I hope they retire the name and just leave it at that. No new name should be chosen and they should keep everyone in a holding pattern indefinitely with no announcements or discussions.

  11. Do NFL teams have to have a nickname? How about Washington go without a nickname?

  12. And Snyder vowed it would “NEVER” happen. The all mighty dollar talks and he will get a windfall from sales of the new merchandise.

  13. Just have a symbol like Prince did, “The Football team formerly known as the Washington Redskins take on the Dallas Cowboys tonight on Monday Night Football”

  14. “ Warriors… come out and play” for those recalling that movie The Warriors.
Only good thing that came out of this.

What a sad sad day. Goodbye nfl and goodbye beloved Redskins.

Oh please. Everyone claiming this will be tuning in just the same the moment the NFL returns. Like clockwork.

  16. “Goodbye my beloved Redskins” L O L. No person who seriously expresses such a sentiment is worth placating. Good riddance indeed.

Some of these guys have been “through with the NFL” every other week… and yet, here they still are, on a website dedicated to the NFL.

  18. Re: suggestion above, I really like “Footballers”…sounds so old school love it…

  19. I hope they use this opportunity to turn this into something special and honor our military personnel. The Washington Soldiers or The Washington Veterans are names that everyone can be proud of. And it could be pretty awesome to have a section of the stadium reserved for men and women in uniform where players salute, leap into the stands, or throw game balls after touchdowns.

You know, you can just go to military events for this kind of thing. Combining sport and militarism somehow manages to cheapen both sports and the military.

  21. I think Daniel Snyder gets inspired by the Cleveland Browns franchise. Goodbye Redskins …. hello Washington Snyders!
