Kyler Murray isn’t pleased with his Madden rating (and he shouldn’t be)

Cardinals quarterback Kyler Murray had a great rookie season, even if it largely went unnoticed.

It didn’t go unnoticed by those who voted on the offensive rookie of the year award. It apparently went unnoticed by the folks who assign the player ratings for the Madden game.

Murray enters the year with a 77 in new edition of the videogame franchise. It has him tied for 20th, with Bills quarterback Josh Allen.

Allen should be upset. Murray definitely is, even though he tried to downplay his disdain (a bit) during an appearance on ESPN.

“Honestly, I thought y’all were joking when you said that,” Murray said of the initial rating for the 2020 season, via “I ended the year at a 77. I can’t really say everything I want to say on the air right now, but I kind of take it as disrespect, but it is what it is. Like I said, I’ll let my play speak for itself, so hopefully it’ll bump up during the year.”

He said that his number should at least be in the 80s, and that “[s]omeone in the Madden office is trying to hold me back.”

“I’m really shocked that I’m a 77 overall,” Murray added. “I don’t really know what to say. . . . That’s tough.”

Just behind Murray are Jameis Winston (76), Jared Goff (76 . . . oof), Joe Burrow (76), and Teddy Bridgewater (75). Just ahead of Murray are Cam Newton (78), Baker Mayfield (78), Derek Carr (79), and Ryan Tannehill (80).

Patriots, Browns, Raiders, and Titans fans would be crazy not to pounce on the opportunity to swap their current starter for Murray, who could become the latest second-year quarterback in four seasons to explode onto the scene, following Patrick Mahomes in 2018 and Lamar Jackson in 2019.

Of course, Madden didn’t see those two coming, either. Jackson was a 76 in the initial Madden 20 ratings an became the 2019 league MVP, Mahomes had a 77 in Madden 19, before becoming the 2018 league MVP.

Given that Mahomes ended up on the cover of Madden 20 and Jackson landed on the cover of Madden 21, it all adds up to Murray earning the cover of Madden 22.

  1. Oh noes oh noes he’s feels “disrespected” by a video game company oh the horror

  2. “And he shouldn’t be”

Wrong, he shouldn’t care at all and his only focus should be training camp(starts in 10 days) and preparing for the 2020 season.

  3. Immature. He did not have a good rookie season. It was ok and a decent starting point.

20 TDs and 12 Ints is a decent start but nothing more. Enough with this
    forced crowning of qbs.

Josh Allen is the worst and most forced example.

  4. The Patriots, Browns, Raiders and Titans fans wouldn’t swap their current starter for Murray. You are over hyping Murray.

  5. I know Murray lead them to some good games and put up ok numbers but he does not pass the eye test to me. He does a 20 step drop back even when there is not much pressure in the pocket. The way he drops back actually reminds me of someone playing Madden. First thought is to begin the scramble

  6. Really! “I don’t really know what to say”….How about “My team needs to win real NFL games because we suck in real life”. Not surprised though.

  7. When are they going to realize that Madden does this 100% on purpose just to instigate controversies to keep their name in the headlines? It happens every year, multiple times per year.

Why they feel the need to expose their extreme immaturity in such a way baffles me. I know they’re still kids, but c’mon man!

  8. Not everyone can be a 99 overall.

I’m sure he improves dramatically once you throw for 8,000 yards and 132 touchdowns that first season.

  9. Hmm, let’s examine the facts…
Baker’s rookie year was better across the board. In 13 starts he managed more yards and TDs, while taking about half as many sacks. He had a better TD/INT ratio, yards per attempt, ay/a, any/a, fourth quarter comebacks, game winning drives, and classic passer rating. Literally any metric that matters, and those that don’t, Baker was statistically better. With Hue Jackson as his HC for half the season.

So no, Browns fans shouldn’t want to swap the two, let alone be crazy not to. Thinking fans recognize the situation last year for what it was. Anyway, let’s hope BOTH have great years and we see the development of exciting young talent at QB across the league.

  10. Minshew was the best rookie QB. I don’t care what anyone says as 7 rookie of the week wins says otherwise.

  11. If you think Kyler’s first instinct is to run, you havent been paying attention

  12. Maybe the Madden ratings have caught up to the rest of us that know he’s just a flash in the pan.

  13. Players that pay more attention to Madden video games than their play books will usually lose. Just sayin.

  14. I would be upset as well. 77 is far too high and generous for the mediocre season Kyler “All hype” Murray had. 57 sounds alot closer to where the number should be.

  15. You guys do realize that it is the NFL offseason and these players are asked how specifically how do you feel about your rating?

All this, why are they so upset. Now if someone said you sucked at your job, detailed all your weaknesses and someone asked you how you feel about what they said. I am sure each of all accepte it.

  16. I know he played decent against the Clara Clowns going 0-2 with 2 narrow defeats. Hopefully he stays healthy, because he definitely has the look of a difference maker.

  17. I know Madden stuff is just good off-season fodder, but are you as upset for Gardner Minshew, who had similar/better stats than Murray but got slapped with a 70 AND a lower ranking than guys who haven’t even stepped on an NFL field yet?

  18. Its time for the football gods to place the proverbial chip on Kyler’s shoulders!!!!

  19. Wow! When did all these athletes become so sensitive? Unreal why they would even care, Do the job you’re being paid millions to do.

Maybe they know what they’re talking about if this is how he reacts. Shows exactly the level of his mental toughness.

  20. I’ll bet Tom Brady doesn’t care about his Madden rating. He’s too busy trying to win his 7th super bowl.

  21. Allen led his team to the playoffs and can care less about his Madden rating or anyone else’s. True pro!

You don’t think Raiders fans would prefer Murray over Carr? Keep dreaming.

  23. Has the Madden game franchise made any deposit to his bank account? No? Mine neither. I am not and will not be a Murray fan no matter how is season(s) go. But, why is he sweating this?

  24. I still don’t understand how Murray was the OROY, and not Gardner Minshew. Minshew was a much better rookie QB. Really not even close.

  25. Minishew and Daniel Jones were both better than Murray last year. Murray had the franchise handed to him and an offense ripped right from his time at Oklahoma. Minishew came in and competed as a 2nd/3rd stringer and won over the team, learned a new offense and was very fun and exciting to watch. Jones was trashed and ridiculed when he was picked 6th overall and was meant to sit behind Eli but got called into duty early in the season – again picking up a new offense, playing with subpar skill position players at WR and TE.

  26. He isn’t that good. He’s too small. Doesn’t have a big arm and drops back to run as opposed to finding an open man. Fours Years in the league tops then it’s over.

  27. This is “GREAT” news…. A chip on his shoulder will keep him focused and motivated to show everyone what a joke that rating is.
This year just keeps getting better and better before the season even starts for the Cardinals!
