Antonio Brown says he’s retiring

Antonio Brown says he’s done playing football.

“Is it time to walk away i done everything in the game at this point the risk is greater than the reward,” Brown wrote on Twitter. “Thank you everyone who been part of this journey i sincerely thank you for everything! life goes on 84! I came i saw i conquered mission complete Call God.”

It’s unclear whether Brown was ever going to play again anyway, because no team has indicated it is interested in signing him. Brown is also still subject to NFL discipline over multiple off-field allegations that could be violations of the league’s personal conduct policy.

The Steelers drafted Brown in 2010 and he became one of the best wide receivers in the NFL, leading the league in catches and receiving yards twice each. But after he became increasingly hard to deal with for coaches and teammates, he was traded to the Raiders in 2019. After an offseason full of drama, the Raiders cut him before he ever played in a game for them. He then signed with the Patriots, played one game, and got cut again. Now Brown says he’s done.

  1. Has obvious battles with mental illness which prevented the next stage of his career from happening. Hope he gets some help so he isn’t a tragic story here in a few years.

  2. We’ll believe it when he stays true to his word. Good riddance!

  3. It’s too bad he imploded like he did, because he was one heck of a player on the field. Hopefully he has received and continues to get whatever help he needs.

  4. Don’t worry about the door hitting you on the way out. It already did.

  5. The NFL retired you, not the other way around, actually you did it to yourself

  6. Now regretting spending the money the way he did. I predict he will be broke within 2 years.

  7. Dude made 5 million from the patriots the other day he good .. 5 million would be a retirement for anyone

  8. OMG!!!! I hate seeing headlines like that. I had a mouth full of coffee. Laughed so hard. Now, to clean the coffee off my laptop.

  9. One of the best WRs out of the game because he couldn’t get the mental help he needed, such a shame. Let’s hope he isn’t broke soon for the sake of his family.

  10. sounds a little too good to believe… i’m afraid he’ll be back… be afraid be VERY afraid…

  11. Ben Rothlesberger’s strong arm, ability to scramble, and buy time, made Brown millions of dollars to retire on.

  12. Totally unfair. Being blackballed out of the league because he called out Robert Kraft’s massage hypocrisy. Elite talent in his prime. Give him a job!

In all seriousness I’d say good riddance, but he’ll be back in the news soon enough.
He probably figures with that Patriot money he can afford to retire. Problem is he’ll have that all spent within 6 months, and be looking for another payday by January.

  13. I Just hope he gets healthy. For all the ridiculousness he was an extraordinary talent whose attitude held him back, as great as he was on field.

    Attitude > Aptitude.

  14. Bye Felicia. This is what happens when you are nothing but drama and a distraction to the team. Kaepernick and his supporters should recognize this.

  15. At least one good thing came from COVID. Brown was a great player, but it’s clear his mental health has deteriorated over the last few years and as a parent, he needs to focus on getting that in check. Best of luck to him in the future.

  16. Honestly, the “All-Banished Team” of unemployed wide receivers is a scary bunch.

    Josh Gordon
    Antonio Brown
    Martavis Bryant

  17. Brown’s lasting legacy will be that of a cautionary tail for other athletes who may think that they are bigger than the sport.

  18. Again? So is Brown going to retract this retirement/apologize in a few days or will another report about his off field issues come out is the real question

  19. Next headline:

“Brown considering comeback; agent says several teams interested.”

  20. Good luck with the legal issues. Let’s see who is “broke” after those are settled.

  21. I’d love to have a look at his current finances – then open betting on the day he files for bankruptcy. Even without that knowledge I’d give him 22 months.

  22. Even if you can’t stand him (don’t blame anyone) he’s still a top 3 Steeler all time wide receiver.

  23. Dude made 5 million from the patriots the other day he good .. 5 million would be a retirement for anyone

You forgot the else at the end of that statement.

You are right that 5 million would be enough for 99.99% of the population to retire on. My guess is that AB could blow 5 million on a weekend in Vegas. We will see!

  25. Get professional help. Therapy, a medication treatment and get off of social media. Try again later assuming you can actually get beyond your legal issues.

People need to stop believing the fake news.
He was never drama or a distraction to the team. Not a single player ever said so. They even voted him the most inspirational and courageous player.

  27. AB is proof that the saying “talent will always get on the field” is coming to an end. There is only so many headaches teams will pit up with, especially when it’s destructive to the organization. Buh-bye

  28. Hands-down one of the more bizarre NFL career stories recently. Stretch of 7-8 years where he publicly seemed like the polar opposite of where he wound up and was amazing to watch on the field. Could single-handedly take over games.

Even if it’s true that he brought this all on himself by being a self-centered narcissist, still a bummer. Talk about meteoric career.

  29. Good riddance! Wasted a 3rd time pick on your mental case! I will never forgive or forget you screwing up our season last year. The NFL is far better off without you!

  30. I said it once and I’ll say it again. … look at the receivers that left Pittsburgh and then failed. Big Ben doesn’t get enough credit.

  31. I’m pretty sure this is the second time he has retired in the last six months.

  32. Let’s hope future generations of players are starting to get the message. In football, just like in life, character counts.

  33. He’s retiring to a Caribbean Island where he can bask in the sun and hurl furniture of his porch all the live long day.

  34. Hasn’t he said this before? Next week he’ll be whining about not having a contract and begging the Patriots or Raiders to take him back.

  35. This is kinda sad. He’s a definite HOF’er even now. Hopefully he gets some help and can get back on track. A sane healthy AB is good for the game, you can’t deny he’s been the best overall receiver the past couple of years.

  36. lol when you put floaters out for a year and nobody wants you, is it REALLY retiring, or is it a realization?

  37. He’ll retire, then attempt to get re-hired, and then he will get re-fired, and we are already so tired that we don’t don’t want to get re-tired of all the AB drama.

  38. The risk is greater than the reward……. Exactly why you weren’t bsign3d by any team, Brown. Please, do let the door hit you on the way out, you psycho diva!

I don’t care what his numbers are, there’s no way this guy even sniffs the Hall of Fame now. Just wait and see.

  40. League retired him a while back. Easy to retire when no one knocking on your door.

  41. say it aint so AB…
    .
with all this guys issues, as long as he isn’t on your team… its funny.

  42. AB desperately wanted to play in Washington. He was working out with Dwayne Haskins because he probably concluded that combing AB with Scary Terry would result in an aerial show the likes of which the league hadn’t seen since the heyday of Taylor and Mitchell. But Coach Ron is all about culture. If you don’t have character, you are not going to be part of Washington’s championship caliber squad. Sadly for AB it was his character, not his talent, that forced him our to the league.

  43. I wouldn’t be surprised if he joined kayne west and tried to be his VP 🤣🤣🤣. Those two would be comical.

  44. Very good football talent – nothing between the ears – if he ever had anything upstairs Burfict knocked it out of him!

  45. I agree with all of the above. The real question is will he make the HOF? Does his stats support a bid? Will his locker room cancer deny him? I dont know and dont care.

  46. As a die hard Steelers fan this whole situation is sooo sad to me. How do you go from being arguably one of the best WR’s playing during your time to crashing and burning every single time you open your mouth. I use to love watching AB play, screaming for that man!!! Who are his kid’s screaming for now? I’m praying hard for him to find peace and humble himself seriously.

  47. So, he’s announcing his retirement a year after it occurred.

That’s perfect. Hes always been late for every meeting with the team, why

  48. Sure AB84 seems to be a little off. But I guarentee if the commish said no charges or suspension for AB84, he’d have 32 team GMs drooling over him.

  49. GREAT! Hopefully this means we’re never going to hear a word out of his mouth ever again?

  50. How many times have you seen it happen? Guy gets the big head and no team wants to deal with him. Next thing you know he’s out of the league for good.

I’m not saying he’s gonna get in, I know this stuff will come into it like it did with T.O. But I’m just saying he does have HoF numbers you can’t deny his on-the-field talent. I just wish he was as smart as he is skilled.

  52. How many times have you seen it happen? Guy gets the big head and no team wants to deal with him. Next thing you know he’s out of the league for good.

Same thing happened to Ohcocinco and what’s his name.

  53. well he did do something I know of no other player ever doing…

he actually PAID to be a player on a nfl team and made NO profit from his activity there.
THE RAIDERS FINED HIM MORE THAN HE EVER MADE THERE! because he NEVER was on the paid roster!

he then went on to get paid for one TD in NE.

  54. Did everything? Didn’t even win team MVP in his last year, skipped out on his last game as a steeler, I guess those count as things he did. I know super bowl champion isn’t one of them though.

  55. Brown’s career fell off a cliff mostly due to his own making. He squandered talent, opportunity, relationships and reputation.

That said, those on this thread that trashed and ridiculed him need to look in the mirror and ask themselves why they feel a need to take pleasure in the misfortune of Brown.

I really believe this guy was never the same after Votaze Burfict concussed him in the postseason game

It is very important that we remember the history so that people don’t repeat those mistakes.
Apparently that lesson is going over a lot of people’s’ head these days.

  58. His gravestone epitaph:

A Supernova that faded fast, quitting on his teammates when they needed
    him most.

  59. All of you supporting this piece of garbage human never seem to reflect on the fact he’s a criminal. He has a rape charge, intimidation charges, wrecked a condo with video proof, and just bought his way out of the charge of beating the moving guy, yet there is those who don’t want to bring this up as if almost saying out loud the charges are false. Give your collective heads a shake, I love what Goodell is doing to him, the best punishment possible by leaving him hanging. Think the two women he abused are enjoying this? I hope so, they’ve been violated yet brown seems to be the victim based on idiotic posts by keyboard warriors. Stupid never takes a day off, from brown to his supporters.

  60. This is a guy who can’t stand not being part of the news cycle. AB, you’re yesterday’s news. Nobody wants you, just go away.

  61. “Reality”shows are goin outta style. Get some help and move on buddy. And save your money…

  62. Ban him. He hasn’t learned one single thing since is 2019 debacle. What does he do ? Go to Instagram to demand to know his NFL status then announce another retirement.. He’s mentally ill and obviously hasn’t gotten help or learned from any help he’s received.. Seriously ill and as dense as they come..
