George Atallah on Monday’s progress: “It was not easy”

The NFL and the NFL Players Association have begin to make agreements aimed at allowing the season to get started, with the broader goal of getting it finished. NFLPA spokesman George Atallah took to Twitter on Monday night to recap an eventful day.

Atallah said that the league didn’t “offer” to give up preseason games, but that the NFL had the right to set preseason games, or not, under the existing labor deal. He also said that the NFL didn’t “concede” regarding healthy and safety issues, but that the two sides implemented the best COVID-19 protocols togethers.

That’s a matter of semantics. Obviously, the two sides negotiated. Obviously, the league gave in on aspects of the safety rules that, as of Sunday, had prompted a coordinated effort by star players to place pressure on the league to relent. While the union may be taking the high road — especially with financial issues still to be finalized — the truth is that the NFL moved in enough areas to get the union to agree to the safety procedures.

Still, the union’s position seems to be that it wasn’t about compromise as much as it was about doing the right thing for everyone.

“[O]ur union had to advocate hard for all of these protections because everyone wants to to start and — most importantly — finish a full season, but the fact is we all conceded to a virus that is still rampant in our country,” Atallah said. “Crassly put: no protections, no games, no $.”

Regardless, the two sides found a way to get the protections that the players believed they needed.

“Bargaining is often like that,” Atallah said, “it is not linear, players still have to fight hard for seemingly obvious things and even when they ‘win’ them people will quip ‘that was easy.’ Fact check: it was not easy.”

It wasn’t easy. But it’s done. Or part of it is done. Hopefully the rest of it will be done soon.

  1. If you have to be this worried about safety, then games aren’t worth it. Cancel the season. Life will go on.

  2. I’ve said before the safety protocols weren’t the big issue – they weren’t that far apart.

The big issue is money. The NFL will not start the season without the NFLPA basically agreeing to players being paid by the week – pay for play. 1/16th of salary each week.

If that, or something very similar, isn’t agreed, the season won’t start and the players won’t get paid. The latter should be incentive for the players to agree, but that remains to be seen.

  3. Why so many folks keep stating the NFL should not have a season is puzzling. First, the lost revenue and legal issues regarding pay, contracts, and leases would be a disastrous ongoing nightmare. The best thing to happen would be to get the season played and do so as safely as possible. Fingers crossed, that they do just that.

  4. All you can do is try. All you can do is hope. I’d have to say, at this point I’ve come to the realization that I might be doing a lot more golfing this fall. I’m already starting to think about projects around the house. I could have a lot of time on my hands. Oh, I forgot about Fantasy Football. Geez, that took time too.

That’s such a dumb statement. Everyday you use safety measures to get thru your day. Whether its putting on a seat belt or locking your front door when you leave and just like the NFL if the risk rises more security measures are in place. If you see a guy is waiting in your driveway for you to leave to rob your house locking your front door isnt ample security measure.

  6. Just to make sure I understand all of this, pre-season football is too dangerous…but a regular season will be just fine?

Greed and hypocrisy are ugly to look at aren’t they?

Then they tell us black lives matter – we know what really matters to all of them in the NFL, money.

Cancel the season and get out there and protest in the streets with the people who really care about black lives. Portland needs help…but I guess those black lives don’t matter to the players or the NFL in general.

  7. Now here is an even better reason to protest if you are a college player and sit out next year. Obviously the NFL does not care about the safety of their players (because the show must go on) and they sure do not care about the ones that was UDFA this year who’s only shot of making a team is preseason games. I will use something similar that Allen Iverson said we talking about playing a game not somebody’s life, a game. The sad part is nobody really knows what China has unleashed on this world except them. The ones that seem to have no problems at all. Could very well have major health problems in the next few years for the rest of their lives. If you think that this was a mistake by China, think again. The mistake was it got away from their controlled area. They was doing this because this is the way future wars will be fought. Lets all come together as the great nation we are and stay focused and get rid of this virus once and for all. Now to all the NFL players please sit out this year, I love football as much as anyone. But I sure would like you all healthy for years to come. We all will survive if there is no football this year.

Football has nothing to do with BLM and has no obligation to that group anymore than FedEx or Microsoft does. The NFL has already made more black millionaires than any entity in the US. Leave them be for chrissakes.

  9. Now that the players have gotten this concession they’ll want another, then another then another. I guess the owners should just cancel the season and pay everyone triple what their contract is worth. It still wouldn’t be enough to please the NFLPA.

  10. What is really going to be funny is after all of this whining about safety, they players will be tested everyday. Then, at some point, one of these players that just sooooooo concerned about safety, will get into a fight at a club in the middle of the season. LMFAO, too scary to play football, but not go to the club. Just wait. Its gonna happen. All of these players that are talking about safety, there should be no parties at their house, there should be no getting together for videos and pics of workouts, etc.

But included in this story is the new reality that is causing so much problem in America: “Still, the union’s position seems to be that it wasn’t about compromise as much as it was about doing the right thing for everyone.”

That right there is why there is a divide and nothing ever gets done (in their minds) their position isnt something they want, its what they think is universally right. There can be NOTHING but what is right, and they have dictated what is right and what is wrong, and they wont move away from it, period.
