Kelvin Beachum: Cardinals were the best fit for me

It may have taken until right before the start of training camps for Kelvin Beachum to find a new home but Beachum says landing with the Arizona Cardinals was a perfect fit.

It was a situation and a circumstance where I know a number of people in the organization,” Beachum said in an interview with Jim Rome, via Mason Kern of SI.com.

Beachum had several connections to the Cardinals that he formed during the early years of his career with the Pittsburgh Steelers. Additionally, he said he has trained in Arizona during the offseason for the last seven years. Together that comfort with the staff and the area made the Cardinals an easy fit.

“The offensive line coach, Sean Kugler, was my offensive line coach when I got drafted in Pittsburgh. The running backs coach, (James) Saxon, was the running backs coach that was there my last two years in Pittsburgh. (Right tackle) Marcus Gilbert is another player from the Steelers that I played with when I was there in my four years in Pittsburgh, so I knew it had a number of people I knew in the organization.

“And it just seemed like just a natural fit. Again, considering everything that’s going on with COVID, the uncertainty with the NFL season, exposure to my family, being around my family. Just considering, again, all the circumstances that are surrounding the NFL season right now, it just sounded and it felt much like the best fit for me and my family at this point in time.”

Beachum signed with the Cardinals last week after spending the last three seasons with the New York Jets.

  1. Why can’t these players ever just be honest? “They offered me the most money.” Really, how hard is that?

Actually they didn’t. Arizona signed Beachum on the cheap costing almost nothing in terms of NFL Contracts.

  3. Beachum was a great pick-up for the Cardinals giving the Cardinals excellent depth along the OL particularly OT. The Cardinals have one of if not the deepest depth chart in the league at OT. AZ has an excellent starting LT in 6″5 DJ Humphries who ranked in the top 10 in pass pro last season, RT Justin Murray was excellent his rookie year playing at a very high level over the last 8 games his 1st year starting. The Cardinals went out and signed an excellent pass protecting LT who can also play RT in Kelvin Beachum & also drafted the best pass protecting OT in the draft who PFF ranked as the 14th best overall player in the 2020 draft in 6″5 Josh Jones who is a BEAST. Now fully healthy 6″6 RT Marcus Gilbert is one of the best starting RT’s in the league healthy and is in the best shape he’s been in heading into a season over the last 3yrs, healthy Gilbert gives AZ an All-Pro caliber RT. 6″6 swing OT Joshua Miles is an elite athlete w/ a 36in vertical @325 pounds but given the sheer depth at OT he will have a hard time making the team but someone will sign him as soon as he hits the open market.
The Cardinals are clearly investing in making sure QB Kyler Murray is protected up front allowing Kingsbury to run the offensive scheme he wants to run. AZ signed one of the best OL coach’s in the NFL last year in Sean Kugler and it’s paying huge dividends as Kugler has done a fantastic job in rebuilding AZ’s OL.

  4. He’s a solid guy… average pass blocker… absolutely terrible run blocker… I would have liked the Jets to keep him as a back up
