More teams are considering keeping a quarterback in quarantine

In May, we floated the concept of NFL teams keeping a backup quarterback in quarantine. Coaches like Bruce Arians publicly have suggested that the Buccaneers may employ this strategy in 2020. Privately, more coaches than Arians are thinking about it and talking about it.

Per a league source, the notion of peeling a quarterback away from the rest of the team and keeping him quarantined has begun to spread, as coaches begin to crystallize their plans for the coming season.

The question becomes whether the primary backup or the No. 3 man on the depth chart would be quarantined. The resolution of that question will depend on whether and to what extent the primary backup actively assists in the preparation of the starter, and whether the third-stringer could be trusted to step in and perform if the starter and the primary backup both test positive for COVID-19.

That’s just one of the examples of the planning in which some coaches may engage when it comes to the most important position on a football team. Others could consider the technically-against-the-rules-but-rules-get-broken-all-the-time possibility of having an informal arrangement with a free-agent quarterback who declines all offers from other teams and remains available to be signed if/when needed, with informal compensation making its way to the free-agent quarterback for providing what essentially would be another layer of insurance against an outbreak that could create enough losses to keep a team from making it to the playoffs.

In 1987, a strike resulted in multiple weeks of replacement players. Washington cobbled together a team of capable replacements that went 3-0. And Washington won the Super Bowl this year.

This year, the first challenge will be to minimize the number of games lost by starting-caliber players due to the pandemic. The next challenge will be to have a thorough and detailed plan for constantly replenishing the roster, if/when an outbreak hits. The teams best prepared for both of these dynamics will be the best positioned to thrive in a season that, regardless of all twists and turns, will still end with the presentation of a Lombardi Trophy.

  1. So, guess we can look forward to a SB winner that wins the title because they managed to have the fewest starting players in quarantine through the season. More luck than skill wins and that’s if they manage a full season. Big old asterisk standing by…

  2. There are a far more too many people assuming that if an NFL player gets COVID they’ll automatically be back in 14 days. That’s just not realistic. Being in top physical shape doesn’t equate to having a strong immune system and white blood cells with super powers.

  3. I’d be fine with just Aaron and J-Love on the roster and Tim Boyle chillin’ in quarantine in one of the new multi-million dollar townhouses in TitleTown District.

Third string QB’s are quite pleased with the probability of staying with teams this season than they had been in years past.

I dont think anyone is thinking automatically be back in 14 days…..but we know now the vast majority of those with covid that are young and in good physical condition are asymptotic or monor impacted ….so then rather than engage in fear mongering we should realize the 2-3 weeks isolation with be the normal and not the exceptation

  5. I agree with Aaron Rogers starting but with no preseason games being played I’m more comfortable with Boyle being the back up. There will come a time that the back up will play this year. With little to no conditioning and no preseason injuries will be more apt to occur. Boyle knows the playbook. He’s been working with the team for a few seasons. About all Love has been doing is unpacking boxes in his new apartment and reading a playbook.

Go Pack Go! Let’s get this thing started!

  6. If I were the Colts, I’d quarantine Brissett and let Eason be the backup. Eason is good enough to finish a game if Rivers gets hurt. Brissett can finish the season if it’s a serious injury.

  7. How is preemptively quarantining people not a clear indication that they hold off providing this non-essential service until safety is guaranteed? I must’ve missed the bit about your constitutional right to be entertained. It’s a shame you lack the capacity to view yourselves the way the rest of the world views you.

  8. Defintely quarantine the number 2. Quarterback prep could still be done via skype, teams, facetime, zoom or other NFL approved teleconferencing program from a secure location (you wouldn’t have the number 2 doing it from home).

  9. Complete nonsense. Name one free agent QB on the planet that could come in off the street mid-season and help a team seriously contend for the Lombardi? There are NONE!

  10. The New York teams have to find a quarterback first then they can worry about whether or not they’re gonna quarantine them

  11. Once a team clinches a playoff berth or their division, look for them to quartanine a lot more than a backup quarterback! Could see them quarantining the starter and any other top players til the playoffs

Historically, most seasons the teams going deepest into the playoffs are also the teams that have been the healthiest. There is definitely a demolition derby aspect to the NFL, and Covid only adds to it.

After strenuous exercise, athletes enter a brief period of time in which they experience weakened immune resistance and are more susceptible to viral and bacterial infections, in particular URTIs. … This usually follows a period of intensive training and added mental stress with the anxiety of wanting to perform well. Athletes may be in greater danger, will coaches still be pushing these guys till they puke with wind sprints ect…!

Its not easy replacing a Hall of Fame QB. But I guess the Skins wouldn’t know…

  15. Of course the ones best prepared for any and all situations this coming year will have the advantage over the other 31 teams. The hardest thing to do is get a group of people to do the same thing. You will find out who are the true leaders this season. I just wish they would post somewhere which teams will travel the most this year. It would be interesting to see how that effects these teams throughout the year.

  16. Maybe this is good for reporters, but as a fan I am sick of all this crap.
Every day, more BS comes to light.

  17. Kind of like a fire ax in a glass booth. Break in case of emergency. Except that this is about a QB who has to stay in shape, keep his timing sharp, stay in sync with receivers… A veteran QB would probably be more able to get up to speed more quickly than a younger one but even then, expect a major decline in play.

As a side issue, what happens if a team has to quarantine their entire linebacker corp, starters, backups and special teamers?
Their entire defensive or offensive line corps? Receiver corps? Special teams corp?
One false negative test is all it would take to cripple an entire team. Getting to and winning a SB would go to teams who are best at keeping covid19 at bay. In a world where the white house, one of the most heavily protected spaces in the world has had multiple incursions, may the luckiest team win.

  18. Not gonna be a problem with Kirk Cousins since he’s such a nerd. Prob won’t be a problem for any QB in Green Bay since they’re naturally quarantined in the middle of nowhere anyway. The single QBs in the big cities, however. . . . .

  19. “so then rather than engage in fear mongering…”

Telling the truth isn’t fear mongering, even if the truth is scary. I think you should research what “recovered” means. It’s a vascular disease, that’s why there’s kidney failure and heart attacks, in addition to permanent lung damage. The percentages may be low but there’s no cure, and we still don’t know why it does what it does to whom it does it to.

Tell that to 27 year old pitcher Eduardo Rodriguez. Because of Covid-19, he’s now dealing with a heart condition known as myocarditis even though right now he’s testing negative.
