Marquise Goodwin says fans are calling him stupid for opting out

Eagles wide receiver Marquise Goodwin announced yesterday that he has decided not to play this season because of concerns about COVID-19. Today, Goodwin said fans’ reactions have not all been supportive.

Goodwin noted that America has lost 150,000 people to COVID-19, and he said his response to the pandemic is to take it seriously — even if many others aren’t.

“I’ve gotten so many messages . . . from ‘concerned’ fans telling me how stupid I am and that this COVID-19 isn’t that serious,” Goodwin wrote on Twitter. “I bet my bank account that there are 150k dead people that would argue different.”

After deciding to opt out of the 2020 season, Goodwin posted an emotional message on YouTube explaining his reasoning for opting out of the season. Goodwin noted that he and his wife have lost three pregnancies and he has taken football so seriously that he once left his wife at the hospital after she delivered their child prematurely so he could play in a game.

Goodwin and his wife now have a young child, and he worried that he could catch COVID-19 on the field and spread it to his family. No one can accuse Goodwin of not making sacrifices for his team, but he felt that playing this season is simply too great a risk. There’s nothing stupid about that.

  1. Absolutely the right call for him.. Hello, has anybody been keeping up with this kid’s heartbreaking story over the last few years?

  2. Eagles fans ripping on a man who’s trying to protect his family? Who would have guessed

  3. Another smart one steps forward and they are calling you stupid. Really? Whoever that shoe fits look in the mirror.

  4. And those people are just another reason why the internet and social media should be regulated in this country.

It exposes just how many dumb people there are in this country.

  5. Given his situation, I don’t blame him a bit for opting out. He and his wife (especially his wife) went through so much to have a healthy child that I can’t tell him to be a “team guy”.

  6. I dont even want to read these posts. Mr Goodwin, you do whats right for you. Its what this country is all about.

  7. A WR family man? Not a diva? Not a womanizer?
Good for your Marquise! Take care of those kids and be true to your wife. You obviously love all of them.

  8. I don’t know Goodwin but as an Eagles fan he can opt out and I take zero issue with it.

  9. Too many fans are STUPID. A guy puts his health & his family first & he’s a bad guy, nope. A bunch of fans are stupid fools. He should risk his life for their enjoyment, yeah right.

  10. They should just cancel the season nobody cares anyways, we all have so much more to deal with than worry about sports let alone professional sports where grown men play a kids game.

  11. As of today there were 32 kids below the age of 14 and one professional athlete that have died from the virus. The overall risk to people below the age of 70 is minimal. Unless he has an underlying healthcare problem his concerns are overblown. That said, he was given the option and he took it. Freedom is a wonderful thing.

  12. I am an Eagles fan and this man is doing what he feels is best for him and his family. Frankly, who cares what others think?

  13. I agree. Stupid move to opt out. A million other people would give anything to have the chance to play in the NFL.

  14. Yeah Andrew. I’m a NINERS fan and yeah he is one of my favorites. Sad sad story about losing the first 3 years ago and then the twins 2 years ago. So happy that he has his daughter now.

  15. Nah, leave him alone. If you haven’t been where he has you might not understand. I’m an eagles fan and I know his story and I support Mr Goodwin and his family 100 percent. Football is great but I wouldn’t risk my children’s lives For it EVER.

See ya next year Marquise enjoy being a Dad.

  16. Yet Eagles fans will say they’re the most dedicated sports fans in the world. You guys are the bottom-feeders of sports fans. All sports, not just Eagles.

  17. He’s earned $17MM. If he saved most of it, he will lead a comfortable life.
Not an ultra rich life, but a nice comfortable one.

  18. Regardless of his situation it’s his right to opt out and do what he thinks is best for his family – not entertain you. Teachers are deciding not to come back, people in other professions as well. Does he have less of a right. Stop being stupid people.

  19. Why do these players care what others think? Anyone who calls him stupid for thinking about his health is the one that’s stupid…..and pathetic for having such a terrible like that they resort to stuff like this.

Goodwin isn’t letting those million people guide his decision, as he shouldn’t. If they took his place they might give up not anything, but EVERYTHING.

  21. There are a lot great NFL fans who are into the game for the sport and are decent people otherwise, but the sport attracts hordes of garbage bottomfeeders and social media just amplifies that. Goodwin’s already been through the ringer the past few years in his personal life. There are bigger things to worry about in the world now than a player opting out for a season.

  22. So what how much money he’s earned. I get the point he’s better off than most of us. And I mean no disrespect your point is valid. But I believe his decision was a family first one period even if he never plays another down. Families adapt, he seems like a smart guy. Riches be dammed

Goodwin just had a baby girl in February. Before that, he and his wife lost three children in the past three years — one prematurely, and two unborn twins.

No one knows his decision-making on this (they don’t need to; it’s none of their business). But, if there’s any chance his thinking is related to what I mentioned above, keep in mind what you’re criticizing.

Also, like he said — over 150k Americans have died and we’re about 4.5 months in. If you want to minimize that, go for it.

  24. Anyone that thinks it stupid to side with the health and life of their family vs football needs to get a grip on reality. It’s football.

Lol, youre kidding right? He’s made 17 Million!!! Any intelligent person could live a “ultra rich” lifestyle if they retired tomorrow with that money. Give your head a shake.

Sure, buddy. Let’s turn into North Korea because some fans don’t like what some fringe WR did.

    I’m all in on that.

Sure he did. Minus his agent’s fees. Minus Fed taxes. Minus CA’s heinous confiscatory taxes they charge working people in order to pay for votes. Minus the God-awful local taxes in SF…

By the time it trickled down to him, he’s lucky if he saw 50%.

  28. I find all voluntary opt outs to be repugnant with one exception – the Dr in KC who is actually doing professional work. I’m so tired of the excuses of today’s cupcake players. The NFL is not asking him to do what most American workers who have jobs to perform.

  29. Strangely, I’ve been on several Eagles sites and I would say that most commons from fans have been supportive of his decision. There’s always outliers that will say otherwise but I think that the majority of sane people are understanding of any player’s choice to opt out.

We’re talking about football fans, not sane people. There’s not a 100% correlation.

Not that he needs my support, but I’m with Goodwin’s decision 100%. Imagine the guilt and horror if he brought the virus home and something were to happen to his wife or daughter.
