Patrick Mahomes comes in at No. 4 on the NFL’s top 100 list

When sitting atop the NFL’s mountain, it often can be hard to find motivation. Chiefs quarterback Patrick Mahomes has found some, thanks to the NFL’s annual list of the top 100 players in the NFL.

Mahomes landed at No. 4, behind Ravens quarterback Lamar Jackson (No. 1), Seahawks quarterback Russell Wilson (No. 2), and Rams defensive tackle Aaron Donald (No. 3).

Mahomes took notice of the outcome, tweeting an emoji of a pencil and a notepad.

While he’s clearly not the fourth-best player in the league, the placement is understandable, given the mechanics of the process that generates the annual list. During the preceding season, a supposedly wide swath of players are asked to list the top 20 players in the NFL. During the 2019 season, Mahomes didn’t have the same sizzle that he had in 2018, thanks in large part to the fact that he missed multiple games with a knee injury.

Indeed, Jackson and Wilson spent much of November and December jockeying for MVP votes, with Jackson emerging as the clear-cut choice when the Ravens nailed down the No. 1 seed in the AFC, fueled by a 14-2 record. Jackson became the unanimous MVP, and the near-unanimous All-Pro quarterback.

But those nuances easily get lost in a list compiled before Mahomes sparked the Chiefs to their first Super Bowl win in 50 years and unveiled as training camps open. The end result is a perceived slight of Mahomes, and it surely will give him a healthy kick in the butt at a time when kicks in the butt would otherwise be hard to find.

Not that Mahomes needed a kick in the butt, but his reaction proves that it can’t hurt as the Chiefs try to avoid the various dynamics that have prevented a team from repeating as Super Bowl champion since the Patriots won two in a row between 2003 and 2004.

  1. Makes absolutely zero sense for a list released in late July to be compiled before the end of the preceding season. That’s just dumb.

  2. Mahomes at his best is the best I’ve ever seen. Just a matter of how long the candle will burn

And to think they were one moron lining up offsides away from having back to back Super Bowls already.

Obviously the games need to be played, but the Chiefs likely won’t be one shot wonders like the Packers, Seahawks and Eagles of the past decade.

  5. When you’re the QB that won the Super Bowl and walked away with the MVP, any list that doesn’t have him number 1 is flawed.

I think Russell Wilson is right there with him, but comes in at number 2. If you call Lamar Jackson number 3, I wouldn’t argue. He had an incredible season before the team flamed out in the postseason. I wouldn’t be surprised if he took home the Ring this year, and earned the number 1 spot.

I’d also put Deshaun Watson up there. He carried the Texans. As did Carson Wentz with nothing around him.

The best defensive players (pass rushers) are in the next tier, behind the best QBs.

  6. Average Olineman got crushed by a superior defensive line, and because the refs let them cheat for 60 minutes. Strangleholds, tackles from behind after getting torched, tackles in the endzone aka 2 points/safety, tripping etc……this dude has a ring. thats it. Very average game. Want to talk about a magical 3rd and 15 blah blah blah…it was the most obvious hold in the history of football. And even then mahomes under threw tyreek who was free on a huge broken coverage.

  7. the “underthrow” to tyreek went 60 yards in the air without him even stepping into the throw. he wasn’t rattled by your superior defensive line and sent you packing fair and square. crying about the refs and denying his greatness only makes you look like a 49er fanboy clown.

  8. Mahomes is the best QB ever, already.

He needs to compile longevity, stats, and accolades before he’s the greatest but his peak already is higher than any QB I’ve ever seen play. He took that from Rodgers and/or Marino. Those two weren’t the greatest because they lack some hardware but their ceilings were about as high as you can get before Pat Mahomes.

And this is all coming from a Raiders fan.

  9. While I clearly agree Mahomes is the best QB in the league right now. And the best player all this saying he’s a goat and future HOFer is crazy. The guy hasn’t been in the league long enough. And remember when everyone said Aaron Rodgers was on his way to be the best ever? The guy hasn’t even been to the SB since his only one. And hasn’t been close until this year. Yes it’s a team game but everyone needs to slow their roll.

  10. Lamar was the talk of the league week after week while he ripped through NFL defenses. You saw the highlights and marveled at them.. Why shouldn’t he be No.1? He had the stats, the wins and it goes in line perfectly with his MVP trophy. Mahomes didn’t win a SB until his 3rd year in the league. Why not give Lamar the same chance?

  11. Why bother? It’s a poorly designed survey filled out by random players at various times. They don’t even select the number chosen, only picking twenty of the top one hundred players.

Mahome’s injury should be of more concern. Maybe it will never happen again or he learns to push it back in place and play on.

Dee Ford was still lining up in the same sport during last years SB.My Chiefs wouldn’t have won the 2018 SB, despite Pat’s 50/5000 season, our defense was terrible, we lost games that season where we scored 40 and 51 points.

You must be very young. Because you haven’t figured out that’s true for every player after every game.. there are ALWAYS allot of different circumstances that could’ve would’ve and definitely should’ve happened in NFL games that would’ve should’ve could’ve completely changed the outcome of the game. Allot of it is the result of luck.. cheating.. the refs missed calls/bad calls..injuries..and even acts of God & nature..

Yet in the end somehow ONE team makes it through all that adversity to find a way to keep winning games.. first enough times to get into the playoffs..and then they go on to a streak of winning consisitant games vs other playoff teams in the “one loss & your out” NFL playoffs…

And by the time the dust settles, there is one thing that is certain.. whoever endured all that and went undefeated through the entire playoffs, is THE BEST.

Welcome to the NFL young man

  14. Right now that just recency bias. He sure looks like a guy that will earn his place in history. But right now he’s just the ‘current hottest guy’ looking good to start his career.

  15. With all of the horror and uncertainty in the world, we can add Patrick’s pain to the collective global suffering. I hope he’s alright.

But if he doesn’t line up offsides he’s that extra half second to get to the qb, or doesnt beat his blocker if he lines up properly. And if the pass isnt getting rushed so its a completion instead then thats a first down. You still can’t assume the rest of the game ftom that But if that first down gad led to points then no one would have that coin toss to get upset about. The bottom line is none of us know what all the hypotheticals will become in a football game. Thats what they play them.

  17. So he needs to be the highest paid player ever and the #1 player every year to be happy? What a baby.

  18. “The end result is a perceived slight of Mahomes, and it surely will give him a healthy kick in the butt at a time when kicks in the butt would otherwise be hard to find.”

    2 things.

First, there is nothing perceived about it. It’s an actual slight and it speaks to the illegitimacy of the process that produced the list. Not looking at the entire body of work the previous season makes it inaccurate to the point of being useless.

Second, Mahomes doesn’t need a kick in the butt. He’s one of the most focused and motivated players in the league. He’s always looking to get better. That said, it should give the rest of the league pause if this provides even more motivation than he already has.

  19. Yeah. Really played like #4 the first 3 quarters of the Superpowl. Just shows how arrogant he is to think he’s been slighted by being fourth. No respect for the players in front of him. The only way is down for you now Mahomes.

  20. List is a joke now. It was interesting the first year.
Now, I think its a small fraction of the players that will even bother to take the survey.

It’s hard to believe Lamar is #1 when well…he has played like #1000 in the playoffs
    ——
Really? Is it really that hard to believe the reigning NFL MVP is number 1 on this list?

  22. Apparently the players look at peers who they see as trouble on the field. Mahomes was NOT the best player all year. Being ranked #4 may be just right or it might even be too high. Confusing the Super Bowl MVP with being the best player during the season is what folks are doing. He went from 50 TD passes to 26 and even missed two games. Other players see that. Obviously he was the best in 2018 but that doesn’t give you a rollover into the following year.

  23. Mahomes was not good last year. He was 11th in TDs and 10th in yards. And it had nothing to do with his knee injury. He didn’t even play well in the Super Bowl until the very end.

  25. This list is horrible!!! To put Jackson at number one should be a crime. Last season after playing the Buffalo Bills every team started to figure Jacksons game out. I’m not a fan of Kansas City. But I know Mahomes is 10 times the quarterback Jackson is and he has the body of work to prove that. Btw ranking tre white is the 40s was trash as well.

  26. I just don’t get it – Mahomes is such a better Pure passer than Lamar Jackson. Lamar Jackson’s wheels are going to eventually wear the tread off of the tires, and he won’t be able to run like a RB any more. I think that Mahomes is on another level than Lamar Jaskson is, and he also has the MVP and Super Bowl rings to prove it. Take nothing away from Lamar Jackson, he is an exciting player, but I am just thinking his shelf life isn’t going to be too long…..

Not sure what you’re getting at with Lamar being ‘figured out’ post-Bills. After the Buffalo game (in which he threw for 3 td’s), Lamar totaled 8 TD passes, 0 INT’s, 450 pass yards, and 189 rush yards, before sitting out the regular season finale against Pittsburgh due to Baltimore having everything locked up.

Against Tennessee it certainly would’ve been nice to avoid the turnovers, but the guy still threw for almost 400 yards (on far too many attempts granted) and ran for nearly 150.

For a first full season as a starter, the video game #’s he put up (while not even finishing every game because they were at times up by so much) were incredible. It’s hard to be THAT upset about him ending up with the top spot, and it certainly isn’t ‘criminal.’

you didn;t watch those games did ya, you just checked the stats…anyone who saw that bills game saw the blueprint to stop the run, sure they got burnt up the middle by the te but that’s why the bills season ended when it did, they’re not that good…this titans game you speak of with his great stats, well here’s the thing they were hgetting blown out after the titans shut him down when the game mattered…garbage time stats got kirk cousins 84 mil and got lamar #1 on the top 100

  30. For those who think this is unfair and the playoffs and SB should be considered, think what that would have meant for those years when Eli Manning was the SB winning QB.

  31. How can a guy who plays his position and not someone else’s and that has won a Snoopy Bowl rank lower than a self-centered positional fraud named Lame? Look at all the playoff games that Mahomes has won in two years and the goose egg that Lame has on his resume. Now Kirk Cousins is a playoff winner.

Lol I don’t care if he threw for 10 yards in the game. He threw 3 TD passes, ran all over them, and ultimately won.

Let me go ahead and isn’t my ‘I’m not even a Ravens/Lamar fan’ statement here.’ No matter how much you try to discredit the man, he had an unbelievable season.

Doesn’t mean that he will repeat it…doesn’t mean he won’t be fully ‘figured out’ in year 3, but this was a list for LAST YEAR, and LAST YEAR he was consistently dominant.

  33. I’m pretty sure every team in the league (possibly including the Ravens) takes Mahomes over Lamar Jackson every single time.

  34. I have said this before if the Rams had 4 CLONE Aaron Donald’s and they call KC to offer all of them for Mahomes not only KC would hang the phone up but also call the police to report Harassment. When will people learn that QB is not only the most important position on the field but its the most difficult to play, trying to argue that a defender is better than a QB and not just any QB since Mahomes is a once in a generation talent is like saying a Dentist is better than a PHYSICIAN. Just stop it. they don’t decides WIN’s just look at the Superbowl; the Rams lost 13-3 where right there and then they would have gladly traded Aaron Donald for any QB who could have put points on the board and win them that CHIP.

  35. BTW.. for those who are trying to make excuses that this is about the regular season then why is TODD GURLEY finish rank 51. refresh my memory what did he do all season.

  36. Dak Prescott got a higher grade than Zack Martin.

That’s all you really need to know about this list.

  37. I’m still waiting for why Mahomes was voted 4th aswell in his 50tds and 5k yds MVP season in 2018.

I think you forgot to mention that Baltimore played hot garbage of team for their last three games. Ny jet Cleveland and Pittsburgh with a 3rd string qb. The last 4 games of their season Jackson didn’t light the league on fire. So one again I’ll say Jackson’s game was figured out @ buffalo. Jackson’s going to be the next RG3 one good year and flat line the next.

  39. Clearly, when healthy, Mahomes is the best player in the league. Someday (if he stays healthy) he’ll be talked about as the GOAT. Maybe in fairness to the slight, we can look at Bill Belichick. He could win coach of the year almost every year, but has only won it 3x. Sometimes these voters just like to be the contrarians.

  40. No one is willing to say this because everyone is looking backwards, not forwards. But, truth be told, this best quarterback this year will be Dwayne Haskins. Neither Mahomes nor Jackson can match Dwayne’s arm strength or his quick release. If you looked at the tape, by the end of the season Patrick was better than Mahomes and Jackson and will be better again this year.

  41. Nobody would take anybody but Mahomes if they had the first selection. Nobody. Aaron Donald? Stop it.

  42. If you’re building a team for this year or 5 years from now…

Thumbs up if you’re taking Mahomes,
Thumbs down if you’re taking any of the 3 listed ahead of him.

  43. If its determined based on the 2019 regular season, then the ranking is justified. Just comparing Jackson and Mahommes – Jackson was better in the following categories:

    Won more games
    Threw more tds (36-26)
    Ran for more Tds (7-2)
    Accounted for more yards
    Had a better completion percentage
    Had a better QBR
Set an NFL record for QB rushing yards

Jackson had an outstanding year, a better year stat wise than Mahommes did.

I still think Mahommes is and will be the better QB long term, but thats not what this ranking is about.

  55. #2 is more interesting. Russell Wilson has found the secret to longevity as well as MVP talk and high rankings in pretend lists like this. He only plays half a game every week. You know 10 completions for 40 yards in the first half. Then mount a comeback, rack up stats and notoriety as clutch player. All with only half the wear and tear of other QBs. Been in the league 8 years, but it’s really like 4. Following this formula will have him play past Tom Bradys eventual record of the only 50 yr old NFL player. Gotta give him credit. It’s downright diabolical.

It’s funny, if Lamar only passed the ball, you might consider him great. For whatever reason, because he can run, it’s being held against him. It says best player, not QB and he got it done better than anyone in 2019, plain and ssimple. You don’t luck you way to NFL MVP. If that were the case, wouldn’t Brees have a regular season MVP by now?
