Jake Fromm on racist texts: That’s not indicative of who I am

Jake Fromm apologized Friday for racist text messages sent to a childhood friend in 2019 that surfaced in June.

The rookie quarterback said his words, calling for gun silencers to be “very expensive so only elite white people can get them haha,” came from a lack of perspective and being “naive, young and immature.”

“I made a mistake and I’m going to own up to it,” Fromm said, via Matthew Fairburn of TheAthletic.com. “But that’s not indicative of who I am.”

It was the first time Fromm had discussed the text messages with the media. He apologized to his teammates on a Zoom call in June.

But Fromm did not state Friday exactly what he has learned or exactly how he will continue to educate himself on social injustice issues, according to Fairburn. The fifth-round choice from the University of Georgia did say the incident has “opened my eyes and seeing the world from a completely different perspective.”

“That’s not the way my parents raised me,” Fromm said. “That’s not the way I was raised. . . . My family has a super loving family. We had people all different kinds of backgrounds in and out of our house from day one growing up. I mean, that’s just something that just never happened was, you know, jokes like that were never said. I take responsibility for it, and I’m going to get better from it. And hopefully, you know, that people can look at me and hopefully, learn something from me.”

The Bills chose to keep Fromm, and defensive end Jerry Hughes said players have moved forward. They will give Fromm a clean slate.

“We feel that’s in the past,” Hughes said. “He might have to answer more questions to other people. When you say certain things, you have to answer questions. But we addressed it as a team. Moving forward, however he handles it is up to him. We just hope he does the right thing.”

  1. But it IS indicative of who he is, because he literally typed those texts and sent them. The NFL is going to pay a lot of lip service to racism in the upcoming game or two before the season is cancelled, but if it really cared, they’d do this guy like they did Kaepernick. That type of racism has no place among professionals.

  2. Yet Antonio Brown used numerous racial slurs towards team employees with zero repercussions, zero consequences, zero media criticism, no wailing from Stephen A Smith etc. The double standards are appalling

  3. Yeah, it kind of is indicative of who you are, because you said it. Now, if someone else had said it, it would be indicative of who they are. See how that works, Jake?

  4. What about the dude who couldnt hit 50% of his passes vs Lsu in the SEC championship? Is that who you are?

  5. He apologized for being a dink.Rightfully so. What would the writer of this story prefer he does?

  6. I am sure Josh Allen didn’t care give he said, well, you know, much worse.

Buffalos not really going anywhere but could see themselves win a division title by default. Jets have no talent, Pats are in limbo and Miami, while stacked with fresh talent and more picks next year, is still very young. If Tua is the real deal, Miami should speed right by Buffalo and the rest of that division in 2021 and beyond.

  7. Not indicative? Lol. I suppose the fact that he doesn’t even care about football isn’t indicative of him either even though he’s on record saying he doesnt even watch football.

The text in question was sent a year ago? I doubt in that one year, he’s transformed from a naive, young, immature kid to an astute, wise man full of profound wisdom.

I get everyone does stupid stuff, but if you’re going to address it, at least come up with a believable response that doesn’t come off like a total copout.

  9. “But it IS indicative of who he is, because he literally typed those texts and sent them.”

I think that is partially true, yes, but at the same time this argument can sound like somebody who refuses to believe they’ve ever said something obnoxious.

The cancel culture has grossly oversimplified the complexities and nuances of society, politics, relationships, etc. Condemning others incessantly is not a means to create but to destroy.

We learn by making mistakes. Some mistakes are worse than others.

I never respected Jake from his game, I consider him a game manager at best with an underwhelming arm, but I’m willing to give him a chance to learn from this. If he doesn’t learn, then cut him and move on. 🤷🏻‍♂️

Do we want people to learn or do we want to destroy people?

I’m not trying to defend what Jake said in any way.

  10. No idea just based on that unfunny joke if he is racist or not. I do know for certain that it will forever be a loser move to snitch on like that.

  11. They were from waaaaaaaaay back in 2019! Of course he’s changed!
    Give me a break.

What planet do you live on? Almost every media outlet speculated he had serious mental health problems and was potentially on the verge of killing himself or others. He is suspended 8 games by the NFL and in case you haven’t noticed he hasn’t been signed by any team because of this. He’s had millions in court judgements against him in this time too.

Seriously, what planet do you live on because it surely isn’t earth.

  13. Latino here ..Disgusting comments by Fromm. Don’t know where it came from but I am willing to give him a second chance. Everything that i heard about Jake was that he had a good character. Hope the guy can show us that.

  14. Yeah let’s ruin a guy’s life over a private joke. I’m sure none of you have ever told an off-colour joke in private.

  15. Fire him. And every play, black or white who uses the N word in any context, even if singing to the rap music they may or may not like. That’s equality – this is what the left wants, This is what the left gets.

  16. How do these private texts become public? I wonder if whoever he sent them to tried to extort money from him now that he has NFL money.

  17. I guess texting stupid things and then apologizing only when you’re caught is who he is.

Who’s ruining his life? Nothing in the article or in the comments above suggests that his life should be over. Trying exaggerating a bit more.

  19. What exactly did he say that was so bad? I’d love to see some of the memes you all have shared over your lifetimes…I bet there are quite a few inappropriate ones.

  20. So what, I am sure others listen to more racist music on loud speakers. When young people are young they do stupid things. But people do change and grow up, well most do. I am sick of these double standards in the NFL.

    +++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++

Sure the media covered it but not one media outlet called it racist which it was! Also the 8 game suspension is for something totally unrelated and so was the millions in judgements against him, so he received absolutely no disipline from the NFL for using racist names against a GM, not even a stern talking to, no consequences at all, NOTHING! And having mental issues isn’t an excuse, we’ve know for quite a while that AB has mental problems.

I’m with chicagolandcolts on this one, the NFL and their double standard is SICKENING!
