Report: Big Ten will not play in 2020

A major step has been taken in the march toward what’s feeling like an inevitable cancelation of the 2020 college football season.

The Big Ten voted to cancel the 2020 season and will formally announce that decision tomorrow, the Detroit Free Press reports.

Dan Patrick said on his radio show that the presidents of the 14 Big Ten universities took a vote and it was 12-2 to cancel, with only Iowa and Nebraska voting against canceling the season.

It is unclear whether the Big Ten will try to play in the spring of 2021, or whether there will simply be no football in this school year.

The other major conferences — the SEC, ACC, Pac-12 and Big 12 — have not yet made any announcement, but all five conferences have been in contact about the possibility that there will be no college football at all this year.

  1. Lsu will hold the national title for an extra year. And even if somebody else wins the Sec in 2020 that does not give them our NC. The two titles are exclusive of each other as Bama has won the NC while losing the Sec on multiple occasions.

  2. Looks like Jim Harbaugh won’t lose to the Buckeyes this year, and all it took was a once in a century pandemic

  3. Can’t blame em…no way to keep players, coaches, etc safe in an environment that can have 30,000 plus hormone fueled college kids roaming the streets, bars, etc…college football never really had a chance

  4. Not surprised Nebraska and Iowa votes to keep going. I’m in Lincoln and things are getting worse here Nebraska wether our Governor wants to admit it or not.

  5. People aren’t as avid about sports as they once were. Canceling sports seasons is going to result in even less fans. When people find other things to do with their time, many won’t tune back in. Don’t believe that? Ask nascar what happens when fans stop watching and the sport tries to get them back. Doesn’t work. College and pro sports are going to lose billions of dollars over this virus fear.

  6. The only thing surprising about this is that it took so long for it to happen.

Meanwhile in the denial-ridden dreamland that is the NFL, we still have some owners publicly stating that they’ll be able to have fans in attendance.

  7. The NFL will ride out like the black hills in SD. First comes the denials, then comes the infections, then comes we told you it was a bad you didn’t listen.

  8. Boom goes that dynamite. Imagine how bad the SEC, ACC or NFL would look over even just 1 death?

  9. The champion would not have come out of the big 10 anyway. This flue which is being sought after and tested for more than any in history has an infection rate of 2-3% and of those over ninety eight percent recover. Next year it will be a different strain that comes around….

  10. The most surprising thing about this news is that only one P5 has made the decision. I can’t believe that any of them might still be holding our hope of playing.

  11. But… there are people arguing that these kids will be safer playing football than if they were left to their own devices.
They argue that they would receive frequent testing and medical treatment that they wouldn’t get on their own.
While that may be true for the power 5 schools, does anyone think the Appalachia States & Southern Mississippis of the world have the money for that kind of diligence?

Maybe if that happens big Div one Unis will go back to being mainly educational institutions where some kids also play sports. Not football programs with some classes on the side.

  13. Most of us figured this would be the case with the NCAA…Just no way to really control this situation right now…
IMO, IF the NFL season starts, I don’t think it will last through September.

    Stay safe everyone!

  14. People that know anything about Kevin Warren knew this was coming.
Nebraska and Iowa doesn’t care about it’s players.

  15. Not a bad idea. For sure the rest of the conferences will follow suit today or tomorrow. Cant ask kids to risk their lives for sports. rather they will attend schools, drunken party fest and get the disease just like the rest of us.

  16. Seems like the best thing for the NFL ready players would be to get drafted now and keep playing football rather than take a year off. Maybe the NFL could hold a 2 round fall draft for those players? The ratings would be massive and it would allow those stars to get on the field right away. Then in May or June you could hold another 5-7 round draft after college teams play a short spring league?

  17. This is what happens when people ignore common sense when it comes to wearing masks and not going to gatherings. Also shame on leadership at the National, state and local levels for playing politics and not enforcing mask wearing and lockdowns. We could have ended this months ago. Now we are the laughingstock of the world and the economy is shambles. This virus is not a hoax

  18. It’s not just about keeping players and coaches safe. These are college towns that are spread thin already when students show up. They have JUST enough infrastructure to support a regular year let alone a pandemic. Let’s not kid ourselves in thinking people wouldn’t still travel to the towns during games to tailgate and go out into the community.

    Good Call.

Sports is the preferred career choice for most of these players, and even those who don’t make it to the pros are able to parlay their team experience into careers that require the leadership and discipline that team sports provides. Without sports, they can join the 000’s with useless degrees in the unemployment line.

  20. Theres only two components to the state of Nebraska’s economy. The Huskers and corn.

    Unexpected this is and unfortunate.
    =========================================
Unexpected? Hardly. Many of us have been saying there’d be no season for months.

  22. Let’s just be done with college sports altogether. Colleges should not be in the billion dollar business of athletics anyway. Maybe this is the start of breaking the back of the thoroughly corrupted system. Please – kill the college basketball next and leave nothing to subsidize the many true amateur athletes (who don’t deserve this fate). The one remaining hope for the future of the NCAA just left town, cheered by all the people too afraid to leave their house.

  23. I wonder how the NFL is going to conduct next year’s draft once it’s farm league shuts down this season.

  24. Buckeye fans will have to sulk over and relive that 16-0 total collapse to Clemson for another calendar year. That is the silver lining in this

No offense to anyone that watches racing, baseball, or hockey, but to most americans, those sports are boring as anything to watch. And I’m a big hockey fan.

Football is king. Those other sports simply don’t compare. People will still watch football next year even if HS, college and pro football are all cancelled this year.

  26. We’ve all seen this movie before. Ohio state would have made it to the playoffs due to their cupcake schedule, then get smacked right out by a decent team like Clemson, Oklahoma, or whatever SEC team makes it.

  27. These players will still get sick. Their “risk” was never the games. It was campus life and unless they cancel that, kids will still get sick and recover. At some point, we have to stop this and start living again. A healthy respect for cleanliness makes sense. We can’t live our lives in a bubble. Wear a mask, wash your hands, be responsible for yourself, and you can control your exposure chances. Locking everything down indefinitely on the off chance you might get sick is silly. The recovery rate is very good. There is a fine line between being prepared and being paranoid. We have crossed that line.

  28. It is time to let common sense rule. We are still in a pandemic of epic proportion. We need to watch out for the entire student population, the faculty, the fans, and the players and coaching staff. Football is a big business, but do dollars and cents take priority over human life. Let’s take a step back and try to stop the pandemic by all necessary means so that we can hopefully go back to a normal life in the near future.
