Jon Gruden is quickly smitten with Marcus Mariota

Derek Carr is tired of getting disrespected. If he doesn’t play better, he may end up being demoted.

Raiders coach Jon Gruden gushed about newcomer Marcus Mariota, who arrived on a one-year, $7.5 million deal in the offseason.

“He has turned a corner with his ankle [injury] and he is a dazzling playmaker,” Gruden said of Mariota, via Vic Tafur of TheAthletic.com. Gruden added that Mariota “really fired me up today.”

Gruden is known to talk up his players, but the situation with Mariota and Carr obviously is delicate. Then again, it could be that Gruden deliberately is throwing praise onto the new backup in order to see how Carr will respond.

Gruden wants his quarterbacks to have a certain demeanor, to act a certain way. To be ready to kick some ass and take some names. Carr, despite his penchant for periodically complaining and/or blocking people on Twitter, has yet to become the Sheriff Swagger the head coach seems to want. The dalliance with Mariota seems to be both an effort to irritate Carr into finally carrying himself the way Gruden wants (and performing accordingly, by taking chances and not playing it safe) and a potential Plan B, in the event Carr is injured or regresses.

When the Titans added Ryan Tannehill last year, plenty of people shouted down the possibility that the writing was on the wall for a Mariota demotion, given that he was making north of $20 million. And then Mariota was demoted. This year, if Gruden ends up flipping the switch from Carr to Mariota, no one should be surprised.

If that possibility makes Carr mad, good. That’s part of what Gruden hoping will finally happen, if it translates to Carr being more of the gunslinger Gruden wants at the position.

Why do people think Gruden is some sort of QB mastermind? What has he ever done with a QB?

It’s also possible, and probable, that Gruden just shoots his mouth off without thinking.

  2. Yeah I’d much rather have Mason Rudolph and Duckie Hodges as my back ups, We saw what they did last year in Pittsburgh, legendary

  3. Mariota looks good in practice but in a game he just won’t pull the trigger and push the ball down field unless it’s a 2 min situation and he has no choice. as a titans fan it was very frustrating and became very apparent it wasn’t going to change.

  4. Carr is one of those QBs that is good enough to start but not good enough to be considered a franchise QB. If he loses his job, he might be a backup for a while unless a team brings him in to mentor or transition to a young QB, which I doubt since Carr is still very young. There aren’t any teams I can think of that would take him as the future of the franchise.

  5. I want to hear from Carr how much the media disrespects him.

When Gruden was in Tampa he had 5 QBs on his roster and developed none of them.

  6. I don’t know much about Carr or Mariota. However, I do know that Gruden inherited a talented team in Tampa and the personnel decisions made by him and Kevin Demhoff, now in LA, eventually got both of them fired as the team declined. I would be very careful when these two evaluate personnel.

  7. Mariotta is a QB, much like Tannyhill, who’s never been in the right system for his skill set. And he’s been injured; which happens to all players.

No, Gruden isn’t a QB guru but all that he needs is to have the right coach on his stafft o get out of him what he was when he was drafted.

    I think Mariotta will succeed.

  8. Carr and Mariota are both quarterbacks that you would like as a starter on a $7.5M salary. At $30M, no thanks.

  9. One thing to keep in mind: Mariota has not been healthy for past few years. He has a pedigree obviously (Heisman trophy winner, #2 pick in the draft). He can play. If Carr falters, Mariota is going in.

  10. Can’t wait until Carr lights it up this year and makes all the haters eat crow…. oh wait! Those haters are just fickle fans who will jump on the Raider band wagon and claim him the second coming before Halloween. Already happened in 2016 when he was leading the MVP race until he broke his leg. The same people the were calling him a bust were the same ones lining up to touch the hem of his garment. You know who you are…

  11. Gruden has never succewssfully “developed” a quarterback in his entire career. Oh, he talks a heck of a game, and talks, and talks, and talks, but his ONE moment of success with the Bucs was with a “game manager” QB and a developed-by-his-predecessor amazing defense. His reputation as a QB guru is largely born of self-promotion and ESPN blather.

I’m not saying that Carr is that good, or that Mariota doesn’t still have potential, but so far Marcus has been just another highly-hyped Heisman bust. He didn’t lose th job with the Titans just because he got hurt a lot; he lost his job to Rayn Freaking Tannehill because Tannehill came in and WON GAMES. “Pedigree” doesn’t mean spit this far into one’s career.

nite2al called it–“Shiny new toy syndrome”.

  12. Did you people not watch Gruden on MNF all those years? He thinks EVERYONE is the best.
“I tell you what, this guy, [name anybody]? This guy is here to PLAY.”

  13. Nothing to see here. The raiders were .500 or worse long before Gruden, Mariota it Carr got there. But the tradition of mediocre at best continues..

  14. So Gruden is Frank Costanza, Carr is George Costanza, and Mariota is Lloyd Braun.

Then again Gruden heaps platitudes and praise on everyone, I can only imagine what he says about the Postmates driver, or Dominos guy who delivers to his door.

  15. The raider hate and jealousy of Gruden from you haters is hilarious! Saying he never developed a qb, please tell me what young qb talent he was ever given? Going to be funny watching all over you disappear in a couple of months

  16. derek will be ok… he only has 1 fewer playoff wins than dak, who has as many playoff losses as mahommes…
    .
    championship

  17. Gruden, Mariucci, etc. These guys owe their careers to Brett Favre, for making it seem like they are QB gurus.

  18. Of course he is. I remember when he was our offensive coordinator in Philly. He ran Cunningham out of town for Rodney Peete. He always likes the 2nd guy better than the starter. Happened in Tampa, also.

  19. People said a lot of B.S. about Smith and then he proved that he was a winner. Hoping he makes it back from that brutal knee injury.

  20. Marcus is a really good dude. I was hoping he would be the guy here in TN, but for whatever reason it just didn’t work out. Hope he has all the success in the world for the Raiders (unless he plays my Titans).

  21. Classic Gruden Jedi Mind trick. Posters are saying that Gruden hasn’t developed a QB in his coaching career which is true. The thing is Gruden is in the same situation with the Raiders now as he was the 1st go round. Carr doesn’t need to be developed just like Gannon didn’t. Carr has to make sure that he master’s Gruden’s overly worded play calling and commands the offense in much the way Gannon did. Carr has to show a “backbone” on the field, which he has yet to do.

The knock on Carr coming out of Fresno St was his inability and unwillingness to stand tall in the pocket when he’s under pressure, which has proven to be true. Even before he broke his leg the guy was always jittery when pressured. After the broken leg, he just blatantly throws the ball in the dirt when pressured. Carr needs to work on being elusive, a la Aaron Rodgers. He doesn’t have to take off running, just learn how to buy time and have a feel for the rush. If he can do that, he can succeed.

He’s got a good young running back, a TE in Waller that has resurrected his own career and new receiver with their 1st pick, so once again, weapons are being put at Carr’s disposal.

And yes, the defense has to get better which it most likely will, can’t see it getting much worse. And once that happens, everything will fall back in Carr’s lap as it usually does in the NFL with starting QB’s.

Yes, playing two games against the worst team in the league ( the Bengals) as well as two games against the Browns and then playing the Cardinals and Dolphins didn’t hurt. The Steelers went 8-8. Of their 8 wins, only one was against a team that finished the season above .500 (the 9-7 Rams). Legendary!

  23. Chuckie showed his true colors when he had a staff member tell his team he had the coronavirus. What a jerk.

  24. Carr is better then he is given credit. Let him get n average defense and see what he does. Offense is one third defense and special teams are a third. The Raiders defense has improved. I expect the defense to be top 15 if they are 12-4 or 11-5 is what I expect. I can’t remember the defense being this good since the early 2000’s.

Pete Carroll at USC, once threw a dummy off the roof to see how his players would react.

  26. Gruden liked Hollas and Gradkowski for a time too, so this means nothing.

Carr fits his style better than Mariota.

  27. Newsflash: Carr has been in the NFL how many years now? If it hasn’t got it by now, he never will.

  28. Carr = Mariota

They’re practically the same guy. Neither are aggressive enough downfield.

After this season the Raiders should make a play for A.Rodgers.

That MIGHT happen if the season is canceled.

  30. The Gruden QB segments on MNF were not impressive and seemed more like a self congrats show on Grudens behalf.
Gruden strikes me as a self proclaimed football guru and can’t get enough of himself. It’s pretty boring to watch.

  31. Gruden talks about his QBs the way Belichick talks about his opponents before games. Both are over the top. Neither are genuine.

  32. Gruden won one ring in his career and it was what Tony Dungy built, not him. Most overrated coach ever.

    —————————–
He’s a contender for that title, but it’s a tough choice between him and John Madden. Madden’s Raiders were in the playoffs every year for eight years or so, and he always found a way to lose in the conference playoffs until his last year. One point in Madden’s favor is that he never proclaimed himself a guru on anything; in fact, IIRC he gave Al Davis credit for the occasional good personnel move (yes, this was so long ago that Al made some darned fine moves). Maybe that’s why he lasted so long working for Al.

And while Madden’s act on TV got old about 25 years before he packed it in, at least it wasn’t endless self-congratulation.

  34. Gruden won a super bowl with a mediocre Tampa team that had only one playoff win the the previous 4 years before he took over, and zero playoff wins the last 2 years. Dungy only had 1 NFC Central first place finish in his entire 6 years in Tampa. Hardly the dynasty in some people’s imagination. Seriously, if you didn’t know better, and believed everything people tell you, you’d think Gruden inherited something special. Tony Dungy had exactly 2 playoff wins in 6 years, no super bowl appearances, and no playoff wins his final 2 seasons. I don’t know how these fables get started, but people need to fact check once in a while. I don’t blame Dungy though. He did the best he could do with sub par talent, and no QB.

  35. Gruden turned two journeyman QBs into Super Bowl contenders. One of them won. Billick made cris carter a HOFer, revived Cunningham’s career, got the most out of a 41 year old Warren Moon, and made Dante Culpepper look like Dan Marino. Oh and he won a Super Bowl with no QB.
Let’s not try to rewrite history here.

  36. I’m more upset that Gruden doesn’t pronounce his name incorrectly like Goodell did at the NFL draft: “Marcus Mariotoo”! The commissioner is always right!

  37. Yeah, but can he play QB?

Trubisky has a better winning record then Mariota and Carr combined.

    Rightfully so.

But don’t fool yourself or believe this drivel

Carr knows the system forward and backward. MM won’t.

Carr is such a dork. Rooting for Mariota.

    ================================================

Dork?? They still use that word??

  42. Check Carr’s stats. They are in the top 5 in the league. His TD to Int ratio is almost 3:1, which is franchise QB territory.

Carr has never had a good team around him.

  43. I think Carr is a decent guy but was never high on his ability to pass downfield. I think gruden got all he is going to get outta Carr and he knows it.

  44. I don’t think either QB will work out for The Raiders. I also think Gruden’s ten year contract will go by faster than we expected without any impressive gains.

  45. Carr has the physical skills to be a very good QB, but he has demonstrated many times that he doesn’t have the mental toughness. That’s his limitation. If the coaches feel that Mariota is more mentally tough and his deficiencies are correctable, Carr is done as a Raider.

  46. Gruden is focusing too much on his offense, and not nearly enough on his defense. IF the Raiders are ever gong to be able to compete in that division, the defense is going to have to be a lot better.

Ur out of your mind. Dungy built TB from a PERENNIAL be-nothing, do-nothing organization to a contender and was a horrible replay reversal away from having Sean effing King lead them to a SB. Forget that did you??

Seriously, man. It’s like you just made up a bunch of words to slam Dungy. Bet I know who ur voting for. All lives, amirite?? Doofus…

All those words typed and not a brain cell used. Typical though
