Monday’s news that the Jaguars had released running back Leonard Fournette surprised plenty of people. Those surprised included the other running backs in Jacksonville.

Jaguars running back Chris Thompson, appearing Wednesday on SiriusXM NFL Radio, explained that the running backs learned about the move when Fournette entered the position group’s meeting room and told them he’d just been cut.

“We all thought it was a joke at first,” Thompson said, before learning from coach Doug Marrone during a full team meeting that Fournette had been released.

“It just was a weird day,” Thompson said, “weird just vibe at practice just having something like that happen so quick. It was just a shock, I think, more so than anything for everybody.”

If definitely was a shock, and many were surprised no one claimed Fournette on waivers. The next question is when he’ll land with a new team, and which team it will be.

  1. Big mouth, weak production………………………………………………………………………….Number 7 rusher in NFL on a bad team with no direction. Yes, he had a big mouth . But last year he seemed to settle in and take it more serouisly.

  2. When the players see their best teammates kicked to the curb and are left scratching their heads, the ‘we’re not tanking’ message becomes harder to believe.

  3. I don’t understand the people always accusing every weak team of tanking — what happens after a poor season, or even a few bad games?

That’s right; they clean house! Cut the players and fire the coaching, scouting and other personnel.

Tanking to be out of a job so your employer has access to stronger players to draft in your place doesn’t make sense financially or career-wise; nor does it make coaches more sought after.

  4. I wish that people would make up their minds.

One day Fournette was supposed to have been axed at the request of his teammates and the next day his teammates were supposedly shocked to the point of disbelief that the Jaguars cut him.

Somebody doesn’t have their stories straight on this one.

  5. Let’s see, the Jags, a team going absolutely nowhere, cut Leonard right before the start of the season and he gets picked up by The Buccaneers, and is on the team with Tom Brady, Rob Gronkowski, Mike Evans, and Shady McCoy. Sometimes it is possible to turn a lemon into lemonade. Good luck to the young man as he salivates over his good fortune.
