Patriots cutting Mohamed Sanu

Mohamed Sanu never panned out in New England, and now he’s on the way out.

The Patriots are releasing Sanu, Ian Rapoport of NFL Network reports.

That’s a massive disappointment for New England, which gave up a second-round draft pick to acquire Sanu in a trade with the Falcons last year. Sanu caught just 26 passes for the Patriots.

Sanu has played well at times in his career, for both the Bengals and the Falcons, and there will surely be other teams interested in him once he officially hits free agency. He should be on an NFL roster this season, but it won’t be in New England.

  1. Disagreed with this acquisition at the time. Very expensive pickup. Didn’t believe the Patriots had the horses last year to compete for the Lombardi. Honestly, I felt it was merely to appease Tom, who wasn’t the happiest guy last year.

  2. lol good sign about the draft? Keep dreaming, a 2nd round pick for 26 catches? For what they gave up, the pats would want to give him every chance to succeed unless it just wasn’t going to happen and the coach cut their losses

  3. Genius move by the genius to trade for him. In addition to WR, they still need need to figure out who will be QB. Hilarious.

  4. Could see the Titans, Bears, Broncos, Eagles needing him. Strong influence to the younget WRs and he still had gas in the tank.

  5. Another genius trade by belicheck. Nice wasted 2nd round pick. Weren’t patriot fans touting this as a genius trade at the time? Bunch of lemmings

  6. Another example of BB playing 3-D chess while the rest of the league is playing checkers. He is so good he fooled himself out of a second round pick.

  7. All I have read this last month is how he couldn’t get any separation and every pass was contested. Had high hopes when the team acquired him last year. Big disappointment.

  8. Played through the ankle problem, and probably is not ready. 2nd round pick is gone, so no reason to pay that much for depth.

  9. Crappy move to trade for him, good move to cut your losses and move on. But who is going to play WR?

  10. Wished Philly could dump Alshon and take him. We just need a big body receiver cause Alshon is always hurt.

  11. Said the 5 months ago, he was a 6.5 million salary and no cap hit if they let him go after June 1. Not surprised at all

  12. Sanu has never been worth a 2nd rounder at any point in his career, sorry.
I’m not saying he’s bad, because he’s not, but he sorta Alvin Harper’d it.

    Cmon Cincy bring him back.

He wouldn’t make the team. AJ, TB, Ross, Higgins, Auden Tate, Erickson, and Mike Thomas are all better and/or just as good and younger.

  14. He’s probably already flying somewhere over the Midwest on a plane headed to San Jose international airport. No doubt 9ERS have reached out

  15. We were advised there would be some surprise cuts, this is apparently be one of them. There will be more, they are resetting this team with younger talent. If you look at all the moves this off season you can see that Belichick finished last season by noting that what they were doing is no longer working, so he is changing up. I also recall reading an article in the last couple days that was speaking to how the younger receivers were looking really good and it was a shame who would have to be cut, Meyers was mentioned. But I honestly don’t know exactly how good He and others have been in camp this year. But also, that means this is interesting and maybe exciting. If we knew what was going to happen then that would be boring.

  16. Sorry to hear that; Sanu was a great player for the Bengals and it was a big loss when he left as a free agent (which he showed with the Falcons). Wish him well; truly a class act.

  17. We gotta be playing for the draft at this point. Build up Cam’s trading potential and get something for him. All the players coming back next year, and a set of decent mid to high level draft picks? Top 10? You gotta reload and reset at many positions.
Should be a very long season in NE. Def not a fun one.

No longer working? NE drafted a WR in the 1st round last season and traded away a 2nd rounder for another WR. Yup, they still have problems at receiver. Looking good during camp? Come on now. Even Stidham looked good during camp last season. He came in for one series during the regular season. In which, he took a 15 yard sack and then tossed a pick 6. Hey, he looked good in camp though!

  19. What a bummer!! I was hoping he could come back from the foot injury and be productive for us..

The cost for him was high, when you think of the WR players we could have drafted in the last draft..
