NFL won’t let Kenny Albert call Sunday’s Bears-Lions game

The NFL has created plenty of rules and protocols for the pandemic. Some make sense. Some don’t.

Here’s one that doesn’t, as applied to FOX’s Kenny Albert: Anyone coming in from a foreign country must quarantine for two weeks.

Andrew Marchand of the New York Post reports that the NFL won’t allow Albert to call Sunday’s Bears-Lions game, because Albert has been working in Edmonton, calling NHL playoff games for NBC.

Instead of the 52-year-old Albert, FOX has assigned 77-year-old Dick Stockton to travel to Detroit for the game.

The rule makes sense in theory, but not in application to Albert. He’s been in Canada, where the virus is under much better control than it is in the U.S. Albert also submits to multiple weekly COVID-19 tests.

Barring a change in the rules, Albert will be unable to work NFL games until he’s able to return to the United State for two weeks of quarantine.

  1. Everyone is supposed to be under the same guidelines…Rules are rules….you can’t randomly decide who & when they should be changed for no matter what the reason is… OR just eliminate the rule all together

  2. I’m good with zero tv announcers and feed in radio feed for each team when on offense. Besides Romo noone brings any value or new knowledge.

OR- Rational people could apply logic and reason on a case by case basis.

Seems like a better idea than exposing a 77 year old man to two airports and a potentially crowded airplane.

  4. Hire a local bears and lion’s fan to join in the commentary booth. It would be an interesting change of pace. Far too much attention goes to who’s calling the games.

  5. With all the talk of player safety, it’s too bad they couldn’t just play the games in Canada this year. With the real leadership and patriotism they’ve shown us how to pull together to combat this virus. The players and fans would be much much safer up there.

  6. Last I checked, some announcers have been calling games remotely in other sports. Not only is Fox lacking in depth (as previously pointed out), but I’m guessing they are lacking in technology, planning, and ability as well.
