Patriots beat Dolphins 21-11 in Cam Newton’s debut

The post Tom Brady-era in New England began with a win powered by an offense different from the one we’re used to seeing the Patriots play.

Cam Newton ran 15 times for 75 yards and two touchdowns and the defense picked off Ryan Fitzpatrick three times on the way to a 21-11 win over the Dolphins. The last of those interceptions came in the end zone by cornerback J.C. Jackson just after the two minute warning.

Newton opened the scoring in the second quarter, found the end zone again early in the second half and had he team driving for another score when wide receiver N'Keal Harry fumbled the ball out of the end zone for a touchback. The Dolphins followed that up with their only touchdown drive of the game and Fitzpatrick ran for a two-pointer to cut the lead to three points.

The ensuing drive saw Newton hit Julian Edelman for 23 yards and run for 17 more to set up a Sony Michel rushing touchdown. Newton was 15-of-19 for 155 yards through the air and the Patriots ran for 217 yards overall. Michel, Edelman, Rex Burkhead, James White, and rookie J.J. Taylor all got carries, but Newton ended the day as the team’s leading rusher.

That wasn’t the way things went when Brady was running the offense, but it’s a new world in New England and it was a winning one on Sunday.

  1. If you thought the offense was going to be the same one Brady ran, you should stop watching football. This is how Pats games are going to be this year, lower scoring with ball control and defense.

  2. Just wait until Cam and the Pats really gel, mid-season. THEN wait ’til all of the opt-outs come back next season! It’s just not fair.
    Tom Who?
    Good riddance, sulker!

  3. If it weren’t for Fitzpatrick Pats don’t win today. I will take it but Cam has to be better than that.

Great win for the Patriots and more importantly much improved QB play.

Look it’s “I’m not really a Patriots fan but pretend to be “
Let me try and take a LAME shot at Brady.

    Get a new gimmick

    Patriots also missed a FG
    And fumbled on the one.
    Could have easily been 31-11

Fitzpatrick lost this game four Miami with 3 picks, Tua will be starting by week 4.

And there D giving up almost 220 rushing yards had nothing to do with it?

The excuse making from the CRYBABIES continues when the Patriots win

  7. “If it weren’t for Fitzpatrick Pats don’t win today. I will take it but Cam has to be better than that.”

The secondary is the Pats strength. That’s the kind of win they’ll be getting most of the time.

    Not that it’s a bad thing. A win’s a win.

  8. Surprising how much it turns out Pats fans truly hated Tom Brady after winning six (6) Super Bowls.

Because you know what happened at the end of the game?

Oh you DONT? Okay cool ..

Yes, 220 rushing yards, ZERO points from 3 turnovers. NE should have won by a lot more. Fitzpatrick’s bad QB play cost Miami the game. It’s not an excuse, it’s fact. NE getting favorable calls is an excuse, a la Newton’s 2nd TD in which he was clearly short of the end zone.

  13. “Surprising how much it turns out Pats fans truly hated Tom Brady after winning six (6) Super Bowls.”

C’mon man, there are a couple of idiots in every fanbase.

Personally I quite enjoyed seeing Brady run in his first TD as a Buc a couple minutes ago, and I think most Pats fans feel the same way.

  14. Pats left some points on the board but a ton to like especially from the really good looking 1st and 2nd year players.

The D as dominant as last year with 3 ints and only 11 points allowed.

The only anti brady comment was made by the guy who is really a Jet fan pretending to be a Pats fan…..just one comment and Futureama makes a blanket statement about all Pats fans.

  16. Cam carried this team today. Literally. And if not for a pathetic fumble by Harry through the end zone, there would have been no 4th quarter drama in this game. That kid is more of a liability than an asset right now.

Oh, and we need a kicker. How do you miss a 45 yarder, at home, on a beautiful dry day? Defense had a really good day.

    Umm, no preseason? lol

    Is that a serious question?

The team looked very good on both sides considering all the has changed.

    Give it a rest, Millennial.

  19. Newton with a short time with the offense, no preseason games , no joint practices. Pats were not bad overall. It’s a start. A division win is a division win.

  20. I was in the youtube post-game presser for Bill and Cam….and the had a chat going. And apparently during the chat, Brady threw an INT in the Bucs/Saints game. The whole chat lit up for the next 15 minutes about how Brady sucks, washed up, selfish, spoiled, whiny, etc.

At this point, if you’re a Pats fan and you complain about Tom Brady, you come across as the worst possible fans in sports today.

Yeah, Sham was feeling himself. He’s a front-runner….mouths off when he wins, but wait till he loses…..and he starts sulking. Then you won’t be able to find him.

    Write. It. Down.

  23. Both these teams are not very good at all. Harry and Michel need to do a lot more to start living up to their hype.

  24. JJ had 5 touches for 32 yrds. Wow. JWilliams name was mentioned once. The punter? Lol. Phillips had a pick, but also had a costly interference. Didn’t know FAs counted as 1rst and 2nd yr players. Did anyone from the 2020 draft class play?

I am sorry, but Brady morphed into the worse of the worst; an entitlef primadonna monster. That’s on him.

And, I don’t want that garbage on my team, nor does BB.

    Thank you, BB.

I just try to keep up with them on these interwebs they grew up under, Cowboys fan.

    bawaahaah

    “pwned”!!

    how’s that? bawahaha!!

  27. The Pats won this game in the trenches on both sides of the ball; good old fashioned football, great job for them moving forward. What happened with Cam Newton after the game when he had to be separated from the players congratulating each other? He’s such a diva! As good of a player he is, the drama he brings isn’t what Belichick wants in his locker room.

  28. this should quiet those that were handing the division to Miami. Bad defense, no o-line and no running game. Flores is in over his head. All he has done in his time in Miami is make 3 really bad trades. 5-11 at best.

  29. T6 actually has time to post here? I thought he was spending all of his time on the Bills sub making sure that we weren’t too excited about winning.

It’s hilarious you still think I am a Cowboys fan. You are used to being wrong so no biggie. Remember kids – Edelman has the best punt return average in history.

  31. Wow, the Patriots finally have a QB who can win in Miami – must be exciting!
    —————

Time will tell because the game was in Foxboro.

  32. TLP6 is just flexing to deflect from the fact that he predicted Stidham was their guy. That Belichik loved him like his own son and was grooming him for greatness.

Bill loved him so much, he grabbed a washed up former MVP with a perenially bum shoulder to be the starter.

  33. Did they give Stidham a foam ‘We’re #1’ finger and a bucket of popcorn while he was watching the game?

Yeah 10 carries for 37 yards and 5 catches for 40 yards is decisive. You’re right.

  37. Yeah 10 carries for 37 yards and 5 catches for 40 yards is decisive. You’re right. He ran hard all the backs did he scored a td also. harry made some nice plays outside of the fumble, also you say both teams suck yet your in here ?

    You’re!!

  39. As a head coach, BB had a losing record with Cleveland and was fired that that. His only success was with Brady. Cam will win a few games on his own, but won’t be enough to make the playoffs. BB is now back to where he was pre-Brady….will have a losing record.

  40. Well, it was only one game, but round one of “were Belichick and Brady great because of Belichick or Brady” goes firmly to Belichick.

  41. Patriots won & that makes me happy… Cam played respectable, but there was a good deal of sloppy football as I expected & still do for the next 3-4 weeks as teams get fully up to speed….
Life is great in Patriot Nation…. & WE’RE ON TO SEATTLE!!!!
Should be a real good test, Seattle is no slouch!!!!
    Go Pats!!!!

One of them seems to be a lot worse than the other.

  43. This should further confirm that Tom is nothing more than a system QB.

Send him to Tampa, he loses. You plug Cam into the system, he wins.
