Seahawks hang on for 35-30 win over Patriots

USA TODAY Sports

Russell Wilson is certainly cooking.

And no one from the Seahawks is going hungry.

The Seahawks held on for a 35-30 win over the Patriots, thanks to their quarterback putting in a classic performance and a timely defensive stop.

Wilson threw for 288 yards and five touchdowns — to five different receivers — to keep another impressive outing by Cam Newton at bay.

Newton didn’t run as much as he did in the opener, but was still extremely effective, with two touchdown runs to go with his 397 yards passing and another score. He had a crack at a game-winning score from the 1-yard line on the final play, but was upended short of the goal line, in yet another dramatic finish between the teams.

The Seahawks had to overcome quite a bit along the way. Pass-rusher Bruce Irvin left late with an injury, safety Quandre Diggs was ejected for a helmet-to-helmet hit, and Wilson started the game by throwing an interception which was returned for a touchdown.

But as the game wore on, Wilson got better, responding to the increased responsibility.

Their depleted defense made the final play, but their quarterback made them all night.

  1. If Olson didn’t spot them seven points this game wouldn’t have been that close. They absolutely shut down cam on that last play of the game. Russell carved up their defense through more touchdowns than the entire defense got scored on last year. Gilmore got torched by DK. If the Seahawks don’t find some pass rush they’re going to be in for a lot of close games this year, luckily they have this year’s MVP at QB.

  2. I loved it in the playoffs last year when the Packers earned the game-sealing 1st down and Carroll threw a tantrum like a 3 year old whose mom wouldn’t buy him candy.

  3. I don’t care that my patriots lost, Cam Newton’s hair looked awesome and that’s more important than winning

  4. BB was completely outcoached in this game. Not even close.

I’m anxious to hear about Goodell’s obvious cheating.

  5. I understand the hatred, but Cam Newton and Russell Wilson are football players deluxe,no matter how much you want them to fail.I’ll say it again,if you’re planning on playing in the Super Bowl in the AFC you gotta beat New England,it’s that simple.

  6. The Seahawks will only go as far as Russell can take them this year. It may be all the way, or not, but they have NO pass rush and no-one to help. Two straight games giving up 400 yards through the air… It’s all on Russell. Next week here come the Cowboys. Should be another high scoring game.

  7. Patriots will probably win 13 games this year and not miss a beat. Cam was throwing darts out there. He hasnt looked this good in years.

  8. What a game! That was awesome. Cam Newton looks good. He’s playing as well as ever. Russell Wilson is playing great. Belichick vs. Carroll! I didn’t leave my seat all night. Just great entertainment. Thank you NFL.

  9. How anyone can find fault in that game is beyond me. With no preseason they were in mid season form and played their hearts out.

  10. Cam woke up in the second half. His bombs to Edelman were off the charts. However, Russell Wilson proved me right and put up ungodly amount of production tonight. Luckily the Pats defense faces a much more manageable fight against Derek Carr. Nice game Seahawks.

    If if if ….
If NE doesn’t miss the FG at the end of the first half then they only need a FG to win. See how easy it is to play the “if” game.

Why do people feel the need to make excuses ?
Why can’t you just say it was a good game that came down to the final play ?

  12. As a Patriots fan, I wish the outcome was different. But as a NFL fan, that was a win for everyone. My condolences #28

  13. The Price on Cam Newton just went Waaaaay Up Tonight!!! He made some INCREDIBLE Passes tonight. Anybody Still think Stidham should get a Shot when he’s Healthy???

  14. Entertaining game. Not going to crown or write off either team this year. Both Wild Card contenders at least, barring major injuries of course.

  15. Should have never had that ending. If Seattle runs on 3rd and 1 and gets the first down, the game is over … they could have at least forced BB to use a timeout if they were stopped … instead they give the ball back and narrowly escape …

Should have thrown a slant from the one. Why in the hell would they try and run it from the one yard line?

They should have at least tried the option.

  17. I don’t understand why the Pats didn’t call timeout when they got down to the 13 yard line at the end of the game. They wasted more than 10 seconds which could have been two more plays. And why did they have Cam in shotgun on the last play? Why not under-center and do a QB sneak or dive over the top? Great game, but the Pats did not handle those last few seconds the right way in my mind. Seahawks are good, but noooo pass rush. Unless they figure that out, it will bite them in the butt in post-season at some point.

    Yes condolences 28

    Great game go hawks!

  19. Choked at the goal line and down goes Belichick! Down goes Belichick! And somewhere the GOAT is drinking his TB12 protein shake with a huge smile on his face.

  20. Fantastic game. Cam looked amazing, but he could have had a picnic back there on practically every play. No pass rush whatsoever.

Wilson is the best in the league right now.

Pats aren’t going to go away easily.

I also understand that there is hatred for these 2 players, but I have no idea why that is. Both are outstanding football players and outstanding men as well. Either one can be my quarterback.

  22. The Pat’s were in it till the end and had their chances I cant wait to see how this team looks later in the year once they iron out the kinks. Were still here 🏆🏆🏆🏆🏆🏆

  23. Surprised the Pats fans aren’t saying, “If Brady was still here, we’ve won at the end.”
Kryptonite Collier stuffs Super-Cam at the one! LOL

  24. The Patriots come up with brilliant strategies to get the ball, play after play, down the field. Pat’s players then practice meticulously each week to execute these schemes perfectly.

Russel Wilson (like Aaron Rodgers) just launches a cannon into the end zone for a touchdown again and again.

Makes me sick to my stomach…

  25. That was a great game to watch. As a Patriots fan it was a heart breaker to come so close and loose on the final play, but the fact that they put themselves in the position to win says something. They’re going to be fine with Newton leading that offense and last year aside, Belichick’s defenses get better as the season goes on. Let’s just hope they don’t have a key game come down to a FG over 40 yards.

  26. Pats fan. OK, we lost, but so far the rumors of “our” demise are premature. So far, the team has played well overall, and Buffalo is no shoe-in for the AFC East.

  27. Game was great, incessant crowd noise on the broadcast made it difficult to watch. I turned down the sound, I am hopeful that this goes away quickly. I would also be very surprised if I was the only one who felt this way. Please do away with the fake crowd noise.

  28. Look who’s leading the NFL in rating, completion percentage and TDs.

Notice also how average Mahomes looked when faced with the kind of pressure Wilson faces every game.

Seattle escaped. If they make it to Superbowl, the Patriots will get their revenge.

Seattle ‘escaped’ nothing. They were the better team end of story.
