Bill Belichick on final snap: Went with our best play, nothing else to think about

The most famous game between the Patriots and the Seahawks was decided by a play from the 1-yard-line as time expired and so was Sunday night’s game between the teams.

After cutting the Seahawks lead to 35-30, the Patriots forced a punt and then drove the ball 80 yards to set up a chance for a game-winning touchdown. Unlike the Seahawks in Super Bowl XLIX, the Patriots elected to run the ball.

The call was a run by quarterback Cam Newton, but it was blown up in the backfield by safety Lano Hill and defensive end L.J. Collier to seal a win for the Seahawks. Head coach Bill Belichick credited the Seahawks with making a good play and gave his explanation of the call from the Patriots side.

“It was about what you would think it would be. We had one play to score and we tried to go with what we thought was our best play. What else is there to think about,” Belichick said, via MassLive.com.

Newton ran 10 times for 46 yards and two touchdowns before that play, but one yard proved to be too much on the final snap of the game.

  1. Since the Patriots don’t have much of a financial investment in Newton, it’s becoming obvious they’re going bleed this guy for everything they can get out of him for as long as he can hold up. When he breaks down, they’ll move on.

  2. It was the right call. Watching the replays the Seattle defensive line got ALL the push though, never had a chance. Their line was better on that play, plain and simple.

  3. The Pat’s played hard had their chances and were in it till the end I cant wait to see how this team looks later in the year once they iron out the kinks. Were still here ๐Ÿ†๐Ÿ†๐Ÿ†๐Ÿ†๐Ÿ†๐Ÿ†

  4. Their best play was to fake a run, and toss to FB…everybody and their mother knew that play was coming.
Cam is good, but not great. Yet. We will see.

  5. A great play call that probably works 97% of the time. It didnโ€™t here, sometimes you just have to give the other team credit.

  6. Those last two drives by New England really showed a lot about how well Cam can do when they let him let the ball fly. He was looking prime Bradyesque on those drives. Even though the Pats lost, I have to admit that I’m getting rather excited for the rest of the season.

What is crazy about that is that New England’s o-line had won almost every push on quarterback runs the whole game untill that last play. They got absolutely blown up on that one. LJ Collier validated his 1st round pick with that one play alone.

  8. That was a thrilling game. The Patriots secondary didn’t look up to their usual standard (McCourty’s first-drive pick six of Wilson notwithstanding), and the defense had a hard time keeping any run under five yards. But the offense looked better than I expected, and they showed great tenacity to stay in the game and have a good chance to win it on the final play. Got to admit the Seahawks look in midseason form already.

Last year I was pretty hard on LJ Collier. He has looked good start 2020 especially in the run game. Hopefully gives him even more to build on

  10. Based on last night, the Pats are still a major factor in the AFC. If they finish the regular season on a roll, theyโ€™ll have as good a chance to get back to the championship game as anybody. Watching Newton distribute the ball was refreshing.

  11. If the Seahawks run the ball on 3rd and 1 instead of throwing a bomb, the game would have been over … even if they got stopped, the Patriots would have had to use a timeout … Vintage short yardage Carroll …
